If you can't understand intuitively how the entertainment industry (music, film, sport etc.) isn't primarily a business then there is no point in trying to explain it.

I can "intuitively" understand that the person who enjoys these things can feel it is not primarily a business but "intuitively" it has to be primarily a business for the provider.................'cos thats economics!!

It doesn't "have" to be.

The only reason you have that mindset is because it's happened in football.
You've accepted that sports are just a vehicle for businessmen to turn into brands and billboards.

That reasoning is comprable to saying "I'm going to die anyway so I may as well smoke crack and have a diet consisting of coca-cola and cereal".

The mentaility should be "how does the business best serve the rugby".

What you are advocating is "how does the rugby best serve the business".

No, I am saying that to play winning rugby, you need to beat the others. To do that in the modern day game, you need the best team of players and staff and for that, you require money. To get money you need to attract sponsors or people with money to invest. To do that they INSIST that you run it as a business if you are to see any of it.

I will emphasise that I refer to top class rugby and am concious of the many hundreds of committed rugby people who run clubs, provide training and work to raise money for their clubs in the lower levels where those clubs are not business's but community projects and part of the "Big Society".

You are being naive if you really believe that Saracens, Saints, Toulon, Racing et al can survive and not be run as business's!

I haven't said anywhere that they shouldn't be run "as" businesses - but they are not businesses in the traditional sense.

Rugby clubs exist because people love to play and/or watch rugby.
Banks and supermarkets exist because people need cash and food - not because people like to stand behind a counter and put groceries in a plastic bag.

Clearly clubs need to attract fans, investors, sponsors etc. in order to provide rugby.

What I take issue with is the attitude of the business side of sports that accept sporting compromises in order to grow the business of sport.
For example - if Coca-Cola came to the premiership and offered them a naming rights deal worth double the one Aviva offer, on the proviso that scrums were removed* - there are a lot of people involved who would snap that up.
I would ****ing hate that. But that's the sort of compromise you have to make when if you run the sport as a business "primarily".
If you run it as a business as a means to an end - then you don't have to make compromises like that.

..understood! However, why are matches played at ridiculous times such as 21.00 on a Friday or Saturday or even a Sunday night or for SH games to fit in with NH TV viewers..........because TV is calling the shots!

In case you had not noticed, which I am sure you have.....it has happened and, by the way, I hate it too!!

I think we can all agree as die hard rugby fans we wouldn't want the same sort of culture to dominate the game like it has football not that it will because rugby isn't as big as football but I think there's trying to find a happy medium while upholding the traditional values of the sport but also developing it world wide in a business type fashion to attract players viewers sponsors etc

Apparently it's only Perenise and Peel that have clauses in their Bristol contracts - and even then they are only allowed to be loaned out to premiership sides during the regular season, at which point they need to play for Bris in the playoffs.

So Jack Lam, Matthew Morgan will both be playing in the championship - what a waste.

Right there is the contradiction................I shall say no more!!!

I dunno how the Morgan situation will play out seeing that he's now attracted attention from the Welsh set up. He runs the risk of losing their interest for next season and RWC 2015 if he plays in the Championship (not dissing it, but struggle to see Gatland picking anyone playing below the top tier) so might turn into a harmful move for the lad.
Cardiff are apparently after him and are hoping Bristol take another look at his contract clauses to allow him to make the most of his current International opportunities. Apparently the Blues tried to loan him from the Ospreys about a year ago but they were having none of it, but wouldn't mind seeing a similar deal struck between them and Bristol.

A potential battle for the 10 spot between Rhys Patchell, Morgan and (if the speculation turns out to be true) Gareth Anscombe, with the latter two also around to fill the gap left by Halfpenny's departure, certainly sounds very tasty to me as a Blues fan! :p That said, wouldn't be surprised if the Anscombe deal falls through/turns out to be nothing more than pure speculation and Morgan sticks with Brizzle, leaving the Blues a bit buggered without even Gareth Davies to back up Patchell!

Keep them.

They are all tainted goods now they've been sullied by the stench of PSA.
