The Official Sonny Bill Williams Thread

Look despite all the double standard signing, the double standard letting him box whilst playing rugby especially in a world cup year and despite all the overhype he may be getting.

There is no denying that SBW has got talent. And as we all know practice makes perfect, if SBW made boxing his primary sport, theres no telling how great he could become.

In my opinion, I could agree with Tony Mundine about his comparison to Ali, but to a degree. At the moment he definitely has the "stay composed, never be the aggressor, counter punch" style that Ali had. Look at how much of the ring SBW used, a small hint of Ali greatness there.

WHAT???...lol, cmon man.

great for the home nations if he was inhured in a boxing match and could not play against us

Oh dear lord, some SBW fan boys will talk ********.

You can make almost no comparison. Ali could throw a mean punch, Sonny Bill Williams' punches look weak as hell, against opposition which aren't even close to top notch. It's like saying "Nick looked almost Ali like, while punching the hell out of his cat", it's easy to look like you're good, when boxing against people who are also new and average. If he entered pro boxing, and I'll tell you now, he will never be rated.

Like I said man, despite all the bullshit that has gone on, if you look passed all that crap, SBW seems to be a very genuine guy and he doesn't even deserve half the bullshit people say about him. He's displayed that he has the ability to adapt to almost anything and I honestly believe if he set his mind to it, he could become a brilliant boxer.

Fan boys?.. I'm just tired of all the pansy moaning that goes on whenever SBW gets some form of hype. Seriously it sucks not only because he is doing well for himself and so far has silenced most critics but it sucks more so because everytime he proves himself people take the insults to new levels.I wouldn't say his punches looked weak as hell, ask Scott Lewis' eye if you don't believe me.

Like I said Nick, "practice makes perfect" and if he truly did make boxing his primary sport, I have no doubts whatsoever that he would become great. I know that if he was just thrown in with the big dogs he'd get chewed up, but if he took the real time to really prepare he'd be up for the challenge no sweat.

Eh?
Playing Rugby and Boxing?

L He's displayed that he has the ability to adapt to almost anything
Yeah I hear he is doing strictly come dancing next year ...he is currently being hailed as potentially the next Micheal Flatley.

Fair enough brother, all points considered. Like you Im a big fan of SBW, hes the man. The guy can play good Rugby or League and can also box but Im not a big fan of his Boxing. Im not against him Boxing as long as his Rugby career doesnt suffer, after all its what he can do on a Rugby field that made him a superstar not Boxing.

I'm bored of SBW already. The sooner he buggers off back to Mungoball and we don't have to hear about him any more, the better.

Well, some are going to hate and some are going to over-rate. The bottom line is the dude is a great athlete and League player and brings a lot to union and might even be great if given time to work on his game. The boxing thing though is taking it a bit far IMO. As much as I like the idea of cross-over sportsmen it smacks of unprofessionalism to me as he is being paid a lot of money to play union and I find it reckless to go off boxing with an injury in a RWC year even if your opponent is about 30kgs overweight. That said I don't think I ever heard him say its anything other than a hobby and you can't blame him for the fuss that gets made and can't blame him for following his dreams though and the fault lies at the feet of the NZRU for not standing firm. If they keep it up they might even start competing with the SARU for the ***le of most inept sports management.

He's a rubbish Boxer! He had Height, Weight, Reach an the fact that he is a full-time professional athlete on his side, and he still couldn't knock out a relative nobody...
He's a solid Rugby player with a pretty unique ability, but he's not too good defensively
He was a great League player!!! He should have never left League (or at least not in the way that he did.)

If the NZRU had any balls he wouldn't have been allowed to box while under their contract,

Sonny Bill is a great athlete but he seems to make poor decisions, he needs to get as far away from Anthony Mundine as possible!!!

Defensively, he's so useless in boxing. Against someone fitter and faster he would have gotten knocked the f out in the first round.

I don't claim to know a lot about boxing, but I'm fairly sure the aim of it is to not get punched in the face a lot.
In that respect, SBW ain't too great

What I don't understand, without dissing SBW, why is he boxing with the amateurs.
If this is pro boxing, well euh...

more power to him he's won a few fights and I bet it's fun getting into the ring and belting a few guys they picked up off the floor at the TAB, but with respect I havn't seen anything from williams that makes me think he could be a great boxer. He doesn't have a super fast and heavy hand that would be a knockout threat to a top boxer and he doesn't have a great defence of ability to evade/bob that comes naturally to good boxers that have been doing it all their lives and his hands are all over the place. he's got awesome conditioning, Height, balance and a great reach but no x-factor - not for boxing anyway... he's got tons of it on the rugby field.

Tua almost made it all the way to the top off the back of a left hook that was as good or better than any boxer ever. I dont think Williams has a tool like that he can use to propel him in boxing.
