Iv been playing both atm and these are my opinions

Lineouts: RC wins you can move pods forward or backward and jumper in front of opposition jumper has an advantage whether it be front, middle or back jumper and also because the RWC lineouts havent improved anything from rugby 08. although only thing RC is missing is lineout mauls.

Scrums: RWC wins purely because its more realistic and because no.8 can run off the back of scrum

Passing: RC wins better running lines and cut out passes, inside balls are very exciting when executed properly it involves timing and good decision making, whereas in RWC you have to wait for set plays to be ready and support players run the same lines, you have to change direction of running manually to run nice lines

Kicking: RC wins RWC kicking distances are super human! you can easily kick from your 22 to opposition 22 way too easy too gain field territory, where as RC kicking distances are more realistic and works well with wind directions

Tackling: RC wins as there are different tackling animations and you can also fight a tackle, RWC dive tackles can be pretty unrealistic you can dive tackle about 4-5m behind running player and make a successful tackle if not an ankle tap

Rucks/mauls: RWC wins. hands in the ruck. though expert button mashers will always win the ruck, while RC can be usefull when using quick bind which is usually putting closest player to the ruck and heavy bind which puts mostly forwards in the ruck to be more dominant

Special moves: RC wins as RWC has same special moves as rugby 08 where it is timely based and special moves in RC are more realistic e.g side steps, fend. also dummy pass in RC is very exciting when executed right

Goal kicking: I'd give it to RWC. More options here again with the power up then accuracy. RC get up is pretty quick, blink and you'll miss the marker.

Set plays: RWC have setplays and defensive patterns, more basics of rugby that RC havn't included. You can even determine what ruck support you want. Knockout victory to RWC. Really amatuer not to have these included in some form on RC.

I go with rugby challenge as it is far more exciting when played correctly*

Good day guys

I must say that i enjoy both. I mentioned that i have lately only been playing RC ad started playing RWC last night again. I am really enjoying RWC's pace, passing, goal kicking and set plays while RC is fun for the it's depth and running.

I wish RWC had more teams and modes but it will have to do for now. Both games has it's good and bad points and i'm glad i got both.

Enjoy

Bought RC yesterday. Have been playing WRC for about 3 weeks. My first impression of RC is not good. It is a dull game. Dull action, no big tackles, slow pace, lacklustre commentary, confusing controls etc. I played one game online. The person who played against me must have thought I was a fool because I was really not any good and lost every single set piece. Yet, he could only put one try up against me. Will have to play a bit more and do some customisation on the Bok team but, first impression, not as good as WRC. Pity WRC doesnt have the competitions etc that RC has.

Thats part of the problem with RWC though, i picked it up and played it straight away on medium and found that way to easy and boring. Then after about 3-4 games started playing on hard and found that it makes it very un-realistic but still the same to play. The gameplay has no depth and i would welcome a game that takes a while to master because rugby is a difficult game.

I guess at the end of the day some people will prefer one and some prefer the other, i just find that RWC is so unrealistic to enjoy. It feels so arcady. But then someone else might love that.

Will do some RC playing today to get the hang of it. Thanks for the link.

Let us know how it goes BM. All of the original hype from pre release has somewhat dissipated to just about being mildly interested now. Me and a friend have shared in the cost of the game on release here in europe. With most things (and especially video games) you have to try something yourself before you can decise if you like it or not.

Posted this over on sidhe and think it fits here too...
I finally received rugby challenge, and can at last comment in an even handed manner on how the two stack up.

In short, as expected, I like them both and find each does different things well.

Here's my key head to heads

Off the pitch:
Hands down win for RC. Everything off the pitch is pretty pants in RWC, its just not a complete offering. RC feels much more like a complete rugby game whereas RWC is more like a world cup add on pack to an existing product.

Online:
Have suffered some lag thus far, but on the whole RC is the better of the two offerings. Again RWC is the bare bones minimum and a very detached experience. The RC offering isnt brilliant, but is the better of the two.

On the pitch

Lineout: Hands down win for RC, great control system of moving pods around and the timing bar is a perfectly fair way to ensure the player needs to use some skill to pull it off successfully. RWC wins points for being able to maul off lineout, but nothing else here.

Scrum: Two sides to this.

1. Contesting the scrum is much better done by RC. I like the twin stick timing thing and how you wheel by only pushing one. On the downside the scrum moves too far, you should only be able to shove a few yards and it shouldnt go back and forth like a yo yo. If the first team hits well first time they should have upper hand, then if the other team counter scrums well after the first or second shove (which does happen in real life), the first team should pop up and it be a penalty. But that may not be as fun so I dont mind the back and forth of it, just need to reduce the pushing distance to be more realistic.

2. After the contest RWC is better. You can pick with 8, pick with scrum half, pop left and right, run a set play. All in all far more creativity possible in RWC.

Breakdown: This one is tough to call. I quite like the tactics and power bar approach of RWC, though it is a bit button mashy. But the heavy / light bind bit in RC works ok too. All in all I feel like I've more control of the outcome in RWC, and its a bit harder to win the turnover than in RC which to me is as it should be. So given there's a few too many turnovers in RC and as the attacking team it can feel a bit more random as to whether you'll get the ball back I'm leaning RWC on this. Also post breakdown the options in RWC are as per the scrum so again a hands down win for RWC there.

Defence: Tough one. I really like the guard control in RWC and how you can line up and smash a tackle with it. But the sharp angles attacks can run at can make defence a bit surreal at times. You do have more backline control with the defensive alignment options. In RC it feels a bit more realistic on the running lines of attacker and defender, and you cant 'superman' tackle from miles away as in RWC which is a plus. I'm gonna call this a tie.

Kicking: This is a close one too. They both have roughly the same options but I think RWC has taken a leap forward with chip kicks and fast grubbers, so they are much of a much. One point of note is there arent a realistic number of penalties in RC so you have less kicking opportunities, so in that way RWC is more realistic but all in all probably a tie here.

Offloading: Problematic! RWC you cant really do it enough, and in RC you can do it too much! If RC toned it down slightly they have the better system. I know its customisable but online is where I live so the out of the box options are king for me.

Open play: RC is fun, but to me feels the more arcadey of the two. Not necessarily a bad thing but I've found in RWC I can play exactly how I want to - I can play a forwards oriented tight game with strong tactical kicking, or an open free running game, or a combo of the two where I suck defenders into forward pods and then spin it out. All in all I feel like I dont have that range/realism in RC, BUT when I do want to play the open running game its potentially more skillful (with the tricky passing) and fun in RC than that style of play in RWC. So for me RWC is the more complete and realistic, but as an arcade experience RC is more fun, though a touch more repetitive.

Graphics: RC looks prettier, and the camera angles of cutscenes in RWC are infuriating, why do I want to see the back of the guys head when (in some cases) you've done a decent job of putting the realistic image of the player in? But RC gets docked major points for being so southern hemisphere oriented. The second you get into northern hemisphere clubs the likenesses are pretty rubbish. RC clearly has the better graphics engine but on a head to head RWC has better likenesses for european players. Missed opportunity by RC. All in all though they win out for the better graphics and the real jerseys look great on the teams they have them for.

So all in all I think RC is the more complete gaming product, but needs to tighten up on the field of play. RWC on the pitch is more of a rugby simulation with greater variety of playing styles possible, but RC has more of an arcade fun edge to it.

All in all I'd really like to see an RC 2 with some of the edges polished off. I'd also like to see a version of RWC that was more of a complete rugby game off the field as RC is.

Both games have their merits, both could improve significantly in different areas. Rugby gamers are lucky to have some choice, but the search for the ultimate rugby game continues.

Mate the reason why its focussed on southern is because they didnt have player likenesses rights for european teams

How is RC for longevity? The real world cup isn't finished yet, but the RWC game is already languishing behind other sports games that I have, some of which I have had for many a year (older versions of madden/2K baseball/golf and PES football). RWC 2011 is dead in the water.

well being a player of the real game Rugby Challenge is very slow in its game play the passing of the ball from 9 to 10 is poor line outs and goal kicking are also very bad and the off loads are just a joke but saying that the game has a stats leaderboard so im thinking if RWC 2011 had a stats on line leaderboard it would win hands down both games are poor maybe if we took all the good parts of both games we would get a tidy rugby game :) i own both games on xbox and ps3 but will be trading in 360 and sticking with ps3 so all in all RWC 2011 has a smoother game play but Rugby Challenge has a stats on line ranking so for me ill be playing rugby Challenge flat out both games have good points and bad points but its all about the stats and ranking

Six Months on:

Played both online last night. World cup is better. Both are laggy as hell.

Interesting! Many people still online?

I must admit I haven't touched either games this year. I think one of the key things to any future games will be the longevity.

Was playing RC last night (RWC was never released here) it just isn't that fun tbh lacks and kind of structure during gameplay. I do like the create a team/character though it's very good.

Well that's the thing isn't it. RWC in particular is going to have **** all longevity due to the lack of game modes and teams. And it's not like HB helped themselves out either. They had a relatively enthusiastic/incredibly annoying fan base on here (their apparent official forum) yet at no point did they ever interact with people or set up little tournaments or do anything to keep the game alive or interesting after the first two weeks. Poor.
