Spring Tour: South Africa v England -3rd Test. (23/06/2012 16:00 GMT)

Well Goode may be an alright player but two full-backs is never going to be a long-term option, it's just prevaricating the act of trying out an actual winger. I know Wade and May both played on Tuesday but I'd still have preferred to see one of them feature with us keeping Foden where he belongs.

I think Goode is potentially a lot more than alright, and are you going to tell Cory Jane about two full-backs being a crap idea or shall I? I personally think it has long term potential, much as I'd have liked to have seen May out there.

Did that go completely over your head? Its another way of commenting on how awful our bench is.

Yes, the sarcasm did go completely over my head ^_^

I think peolple who havn't watched the Bulls in S15 action will be surprised by the pace at which Jacques Potgieter (despite the emo haircut) plays his rugby. Just hope the other Bokke are also up to it ITO getting there in time to support him and his bustling black mop of hair.

Fine, but having two full-backs is only pointful when both are of the highest quality. Alex Goode isn't a Cory Jane.

Ah well. True in principle, but I'm not sure I agree with you about Alex Goode. Hopefully we'll have a better idea come Saturday evening.

edit: Note I'm not sure enough to say I definitely disagree either.

To be honest I'm not sure either, I was probably overstating the case against Goode - I do think he's a good player. But as you say the jurys out until saturday on how he goes as part of a backline looking to attack. Good counter-attacker though.

I would have no problem selecting players where they are able to play at the particular level. So if we take Jane for example, it's not that your playing a fullback on the wing but rather that you are playing someone who is capable of playing wing and fullback on the wing. However in this situation from what I have seen, currently at this level Foden is not a capable winger. He lacks positional awareness to allow him to create options.

Both teams look a bit depleted by injury (/getting married), so it will be an interesting match. South Africa have stuck with the same formula in their loose-forwards, with Potgieter quite a similar player to Alberts in my opinion. Both are primarily ball runners - I'd suggest Alberts may be more destructive, but Potgieter looks a bit more accurate in everything he does (though to be fair I've only seen him play 3 or 4 times). I still remain unconvinced about the makeup of the Boks loose-trio, but it is hard to argue with a 2-0 series lead! The English loose-trio will certainly miss Robshaw, but I think Haskell is a good addition to the team. While in general I'd rate Robshaw higher than Haskell, I think Haskell's style of play will suit playing against South Africa. I think Waldrom too will add a bit to England's pack. I'm not a huge fan as I think he is a very one-dimensional player - he doesn't do enough around the field for my liking, and isn't an option at lineout time, but the one thing he does do (ball-running) he does very well, and he does a lot of it.

I'm interested to see how Care goes in his first start in quite a while at 9, and how Goode goes at fullback (as I've seen very little of him). The South African backline looks much weaker without Steyn at 12, as I think they will miss the different options he gave them in attack (as Olivier will just crash the ball up if he receives the ball). I feel England will definitely look to target the 10/12 channel this weekend (especially with Tuilagi). I remain unconvinced with Aplon at fullback too - he's a class wing, but doesn't look a natural fullback to me.

Overall I'm expecting a pretty close game - I'll pick South Africa by 5-10 (again).

I like Potgieter, like stormer2010 said, he plays at full RPM. He also has no fear or regard for his body. He's like a better version of Spies IMO (Potgieter - 194 cm 115kg & Spies 194 cm 104kg)
Technically his is lacking though. In would like to see his stat for handling errors as he tends to loose the ball in contact quite a bit.

Yeah that might count against him, but he makes that up in the massive hits he puts in on Defence... that's the part of his game that made me sit up and take notice... He likes to hurt guys when going into contact... If he and Alberts were to play together, they'd be the ultimate Bash-brothers

Losing the ball is a trademark of Alberts as well. As long as Potgieter and Alberts make up for it by gaining massive ground with the ball in hand, I am fine with that.

Corbs out, Marler in, PDJ in, Optimism out. F**k.

That's gash.
Would've rather had Mullan come straight in at 1, to be honest (and PDJ on the bench, as I think he's far better than the penalty he gave away first test suggested) - but he played midweek so no chance.

Change the logo? Eh?

Not today, good luck though

For f***s sake Peat, it's all your fault. I really am very disappointed by that - I was beginning to think we had a chance. silly me.

I do delight in bad news it's true, but your optimism there is your own f**king fault!

[h=1]Eng prop Corbisiero out of third SA test[/h]

England loosehead prop Alex Corbisiero has been ruled out of the third test against South Africa after suffering a recurrence of a knee injury, team management announced on Friday.
The 23-year-old Corbisiero made an immediate impact when he came off the bench during England's 36-27 defeat in the second test against the Springboks and was rewarded with a place in the starting side for the final test of the series on Saturday.
Corbisiero's place will now be taken by Joe Marler, who will move up from the bench to make his third appearance, with Paul Doran Jones drafted in as one of the replacements.
"Alex trained well early in the week having played well at the weekend but the knee reacted over the last 24 hours," England head coach Stuart Lancaster said in a statement.
"It is a shame for Alex as he was desperate to take part but it's the right thing to put in Joe and we are sure he can build on his performances in the first two tests,"
England: 15-Alex Goode, 14-Chris Ashton, 13-Jonathan Joseph, 12-Manusamoa Tuilagi, 11-Ben Foden, 10-Toby Flood, 9-Danny Care, 8-Thomas Waldrom, 7-James Haskell, 6-Tom Johnson, 5-Geoff Parling, 4-Tom Palmer, 3-Dan Cole, 2-Dylan Hartley (cap), 1-Joe Marler.
Replacements: 16-Lee Mears, 17-Paul Doran Jones, 18-Mouritz Botha, 19-Phil Dowson, 20-Lee Dickson, 21-Owen Farrell, 22-Brad Barritt.

Although you'd have to go with a South African win at this point, Care and Haskell are too much needed additions and I'm really interested to see how they go. Care takes much of the best of both Youngs and Dickson in one player so hopefully he can transfer his domestic form to the game tomorrow. Haskell meanwhile is more than capable of coping with the physicality of Potgeiter and co so hopefully he has a good game *without being sin-binned!*

Less than half of this squad should be really making the 22. Compared to Wales, whose only faults lie in not trying different half-backs/hookers/Ian Evans. *sigh*

Not optimistic...
