Spring Tour: South Africa - England - 1st Test (09/06/2012, 16:00 GMT)

The 50+ points matches against England were in '07

Best win against England however was in 2008 at Twickenham... 6-42

That's the one I was thinking of. That was my first visit to Twickenam. Contemptable, embarrasing display! But I had so much admiration for how South Africa played.

More so than how England handle the kicks, I'm interested to see how they handle our massive ball carriers. I'm talking about Bismarck, Etzebeth, Coetzee and Willem here.
If the England line is scrambling backwards from the forward momentum it makes the kick-and chases all the more difficult to handle calmly.

During the 6N our defense was pretty solid against all comers, especially that GIANT Welsh back line. That being said, we no longer have Andy Farrell as out Backs coach (say what you like about him, he knows how to organise a defense) and the names you just listed are a whole different kettle of fish...

I think that most players in the team are an above average tackler for their position, so hopefully, they will be able to deal with the SA ball carriers effectively.

That team was probably even better than the team that won the World Cup a year before despite the poor coach. It was all good, up to 2009. After that it went downhill and Snor couldn't stop the downfall, mainly because of the selection of Januarie, Kirchner, Olivier, Dewald Potgieter, Stegmann and so on... Oh well... Things are different now!

Id love to know who's supposed to general the lineout. Not a single specialist in the back row or boiler room. (1st person to say parling gets a slap).

With Marler and Hartley both starting someone better be ready to shout "Call 99" so we don't lose both to red cards straight away

Foden or Farrell, they're just that versatile.
Though on a serious note, I think Parling is a good lineout caller. Possibly not as good as Palmer or Croft, but a good option and on good form for club and country.

I got SO sick of hearing how GIANT the welsh backs were. They still missed about 6 tackles on Manu between them! As for South Africa, Willem Alberts is a worryingly big guy for an openside flanker....our 6.5's will have their work cut out with him! Interested to know what kind of 7 he is though, as he doesn't seem to be typical physique for an openside.

Otherwise, there are some big guys out there but we're hardly a small side. Morgan may be called upon to make a lot of carries as he's one of few natural big ball carriers. This said, it hasn't been a big problem for us so far under Lancaster. We have a team of reasonable size who shift the ball around the bit amongst forwards and get going forward that way. I'm pretty happy with that approach to be honest.

We'll rely on Farrell no doubt to put us in the right parts of the field - no sense in having an arm wrestle in your own 22!

Grand Slam?

Sorry could not resist

Just to point out Alberts is not an openside. South Africa swap the numbers Coetzee is the actual openside...though he is pretty big for an openside.

They still kept him out in the end though (with a little help from Sam Warburton). Its when they run at you that the size of those backs is the issue, not so much when you're running at them.

They have Brown to thank for the gloating. Try scoffing bottler.

Have to say I think it's smart of Lancaster copying the New Zealand tactic of picking two fullbacks as the South African's game plan is obviously going to be kick...a lot.

Why do you think Parling isn't a lineout specialist?

The same reason I don't think marler is any use in the scrum.

Because you're living in the past? :p

I'll be interested to see how Marler gets on - he certainly looks the business atm, but I can't help but remember his numerous poor performances in the scrum over the past two season or season and a half, at least, as he's gone well recently).

In South Africa 7 is blind side, 6 is open side. Coetzee is versatile and can play all 3 positions in the backrow if necessary.

Francois has his floppy hair back, what more is needed (besides a different stand off and fullback)?
