Sam Burgess Playing 6 Vs Newcastle

RE: Garvey - him moving into the second row makes a lot of sense, given how stacked our back row is, and that we could do with a second rower. And tactically, we employ quick, hard running back rowers a lot and Garvey fits that description less than our other flankers.

I do feel he adds to the balance of the back row, for that very reason. While I don't feel our back row is a weakness as such it could stand to be improved - and I think a lot of potential issues there are masked by what an exceptional player Francois Louw is. I can't really think of a Bath back row combo I wouldn't be worried about starting against a top side with Louw out.

What should we make of Bath having two back rows on the bench? Sam is covering the centres or they want to be able to take him off of he has a 'mate and still have cover the back row if someone else gets a knock

Or am I over analysing?

Cool ... do you think the added calcium/stronger bones will help him the contact situations, playing in the forwards :)

Ha, touché!

I said since the very beginning of his union life that Burgess wouldn't make the World Cup squad. I'm still confident in right, and willing to accept forfeits against it.

I'm even more confident that he SHOULDN'T make the World Cup squad.

EDIT: I guess Burgess covers centres, Devoto covers ten, Homer covers wing?! It's a bit odd, with Garvey in the second row there are 6 back rowers in the squad (if you include Burgess in that). Maybe an impact back in place of one of the bench flankers would have been a better bet.

Is Eastmond injured, does anyone know? Or just rested? Dropped...?

Injured according to Bath website as is Hooper.

JP Doyle: "If you bind on the arm and the scrum goes down, you get penalised".

Why wait until the scrum goes down?

Burgess missed a tackle early but helped holding up that maul. Ford lovely disguise on that pass, good power from Devoto.

Joseph distribution skill is amazing there. Thought it was Eastmond at first.

Another Burgess handling error.

guys....I think Roko might be back (about time too) :D
Also Devoto is a much better IC than fly half- surprise surprise
has Burgess coated his hands with butter?

Brilliant finish there but some questionable defending. Sinoti Sinoti a fantastic ball carrier.

Only just caught the end of the half so I saw Burgess and Auterac smash Harris and he then ripped the ball in the middle of the park. Also that Devoto pass, is he maybe a bolter ? I keep thinking between him and Slade we have two great ball playing utility guys.

Burgess has been fine just looks like he's trying too hard.

Devoto before the world cup? Wouldn't judge him on just one game vs Newcastle he's been pants at 10 the last few months.

At 10 is the important part. As a utility I think you can have him 12/13/15 and then at a push 10. Slade is good at 10/13 and I would bet at 12/15.

Devoto is obviously a 12, think he might need to move from Bath though to get a season playing there as a starter. Burgess did better as half wore on.

i think Ford makes 12s playing outside him look good - he even made 12T look good vs Italy! However, that takes nothing away from Devoto, the delayed pass for Watson's try was class.

Shows how crap Burnell was....

Yeah I hope Devoto goes well but I don't think he'll bolt. Needs way more games at 12 to see if this is just a fluke.

Burgess grew into game, still no chance I'd have him in the WC squad (or even invite him to the summer training camp thing).

Hell be at the training camp, and in the next EPS, but he won't go to the WC.

Think he was good value tonight.... They should persist.

Don't want to jump on the hype train but Burgess liked good today, better than he has so far in union. I think 6 gives him more freedom to roam, and he did do traditional 6 roles well (carried hard, made tackles, hit a lot of rucks etc)
