SA vs Wales (June 2022 series)

On to who else might play for us at 10.. That is a question we will need to answer and my hope is that the right person will stand up and be counted when the time comes but all the options I can think of have an asterisk next to their names;

Jantjies has had so many chances as isn't going to get any better.

Goosen was probably the best SA 10 start of last year but is made of glass and also not getting any younger.

Willemse will not be playing 10 for the Stormers and I agree with the general consensus that 12 is his best position. I don't agree that he is a better 15 than a 10 though but the combination of him playing his club rugby at 12 and his value to the Bokke as a utility back probably rules him out of the picture.

I believe we are past looking at Morne Steyn at this point?

Even though I have a soft spot for the man, I would not feel comfortable with Libbok at test level. I'd add Bosch here as well as I see them as very similar players and though I do believe that the test side has it in them to play a bit more open I believe that a mercurial player would not fit in with the rest of the side. Not if they don't sharp up their positional kicking, defense and goal kicking.

But the RWC is next year and it's probably going to be Jantjies and Willemse. And that's probably fair enough with no legitimate alternative in so short a time scale and Goosen being a what if.

I'm not sure I can think of a reason to retain Jantjies other than he's been around for a bit. That's it. If Goosen is fit, take him knowing that Willemse can shoulder the load if he gets injured. I'm still of the opinion that Willemse could do the job at 10, but I've been overruled by the majority here and that's alright. We all want what's best for the team.

Maul D has been good though (bar the last 15 mins or so in that 1st test) I think this is probably Beards biggest strength. I can see it happening though.

Welsh maul defence has been surprisingly resilient and I've been impressed. That said, if all we see from SA is 10+ mauls and nothing else, I will be mightily disappointed even with a win.

Me saying Etzebeth had a poor game does not mean that I say drop him going forward or even drop him for a single game. I did include him in what I see as our strongest team. I was more going in the direction - although I didn't specifically state it - that we cannot lay last weeks loss at the feet of the new caps, or at least not just at their feet. Etzebeth as great a player as he is was one of the weakest links in that performance on the day. I'll stand by that statement in the isolated context of that game.

That leaves Chris Smith, Boeta Chamberlain, Hendrickse or a young up and commer like Mngomezulu or Wolhuter. Maybe given time? Yea Goosen is the next best 10, he is getting older but will probably be at his peak for the next three years, the benefit of a career full of injuries is that your shelf life could have been extended as your body had to go through much less rugby.

His tactical aspect of the game could have benefited from the months of pondering his return from his home. Perhaps challenge Pollard for the starting 10 roles.

But as you say. Just like Lambie was, he is also a porcelain poodle. And I don't recall one season which he completed injury free. All signs point to him continuing the trend. He and Lambies' bravery in defence do not help their case.

So it's a big but, but if he can stay injury free...

It says a lot about the player that he could have such an injury-disrupted career and yet, he is included in the bok camp even when he has barely even played a URC game all year. Even injured he is considered higher than many other players.

No chance? Don't get me wrong, you should win but you narrowly won the first test and lost the second. No chance seems a bit over the top.
Yeah it is sorry. Wales are the only team who play like we do, and for some reason they have had our number since the 2011 WC pool game we scraped. They are also an 80 minute team and have showed time and again how to snatch wins from the Jaws of defeat.

Hope I'm semi right though ugh a tour loss would be a disaster. Then again we had a nightmare season in 2006 and won the WC. And we were ******** in 2016/17 and came right. A year is a long time in rugby. Just ask Ireland who peak every year before a WC lol.

No need to apologise. It's definitely possible you dominate us and win comfortably. It's also far more likely to happen than say us beating you by 15/20 points. If we win this game it's 100% going to be by a few points but even though I think you'll end up winning a tight game I would allow a greater chance of you putting us to the sword than us you if you know what I mean.

Was hearing that the Welsh and SA boys had a good meet up after the game for a few drinks which is nice to hear about.

Also I think you mean the 2015 World Cup. Was watching that with my South African mate. Haven't watched a game with him since. Lol.

Nah it was the pool game in 11. The WC where Sam got carded vs France. That pool game was the first time I ever thought we would lose to Wales, because prior to that, no disrespect, but we often mauled Wales (bar the 99 game which was the first at Millennium stadium if I recall) won by ol Jenkins.

But yeah, from 2015 like you say, it's been so tight ever since. The only thing that has decided a Wales vs SA game in the last 7 plus years is the last 5 minutes of the test match.

Let's just hope for a good game. The first game was decent but that horrible poo of last week (the rugby quality I mean - Wales were full value for their win) needs to be met with the most epic of epic. Also please no cards, and please no TMO this and that. We need some good tests this weekend! But a sold out clear weather Cape Town is a good omen. Good luck to both teams. World rankings mean naught, because EVERY team in the top 9 could beat the other on their day it seems. Great for the sport!

I agree that Adam Beard is too skinny for a professional lock. Even Gareth Davies has a much more muscular physique than him.

Lewis apparently hyper-extended his elbow after the second test but is good to go. That's a pretty impressive turnaround. Hopefully no one drops the ball or throws a forward pass. Keep the scrums under 1 and I think we'll do it.

Tells me he will go short bind as much as possible. I've hyperextended my limbs and it severely limits your range of motion for weeks.

He played against Fiji with a ruptured plantar fascia. Pivac said his pain tolerance is high. I did read a comment from Lewis after the first test (baring in mind he pretty much played the full 80mins due to Francis getting sparked out) where he said that was the most fun he's had in a wales shirt or something like that which I thought was weird seeing as we lost but maybe he likes pain.

This series has reinforced the old adage: You're never as bad as people say you are and never as good as people say either.

Wales were within 1 score of France but people only focus on the Italy game. As Nassim Taleb would say, People are easily fooled by randomness.

Jantiles isn't even a fun bad flyhalf cause he doesn't even do fun reckless ****. He just decided that starting in 2018 he was gonna be in accurate with both boot and hand.

Surely there is a 30 year old in the Currie cup that can at least give the people their money's worth during throw away games.

Just check the fly halves playing in the curriecup final....between two smaller unions. Way better.

Wallabies were revitalised by the arrival of Nic White's moustache - why not the Boks too?

He must get a real beard then he will stand a chance
