[RWC2023] South Africa vs Ireland (23/09/2023)

Yeah, that's who I came up with - could potentially put out a bench of 8 forwards, who all play 7s, and are comfortable in the backline if necessary.
Obviously, the 3 specialist front rowers puts paid to them using a bench of 8 backs - but they probably could get away with a 3:5 split as well.
Absolutely. The fact they could conceivably go both ways is ridiculous.

The Dupont injury kind of takes some of the edge off this (as I think now a poor NZ are just about even with a Dupontless France). Boks clearly going full tilt but I'm expecting some premature celebration from the Worlds No.1.

Ireland 18 - 9 Boks

I'm expecting Ireland to win. On paper they are just a stronger side I feel. Also feels like we are still in the last phase of experimenting with this gameplan and bench. Not so sure we would have done this had we lost to Scotland. Either way, deep down no side wants to lose this. I hope it's a cracker.

If Ireland win, and it's a big if, there won't be any "premature celebration". This team are in for the long haul. Not a pool stage win.

Everywhere I see a headline or a journalist's prediction or betting odds I see us being called favorites but I can't see why. We certainly will have a decent chance of it I'm sure but Ire has the record, has the recent record in direct matches, is the higher ranked side, doesn't have the injuries and if that weren't enough have more to play for in that they still have Scotland next up. Am I missing something?
