RWC: Australia - Ireland (17-09-2011 20:30)

Fielding Ben McCalman against Sean O'Brien in n.7 jersey, is quite much like staying under Irene with an umbrella.

I mean Irene the atlantic hurricane.

WOW!..Ireland awesome, their fans can be proud of their team already.

Cooper was made look very average today, he never got his backline going and resorted to stupid chip kicks, Australia's back 3 weren't allowed to get going we isolated Genia. Aus missed Pocock greatly but not being able to score a try is still worrying.*

10. ROG
12. Sexton
13. O'Driscoll*

should be the combo for the rest of the comp.

EDIT: Also O'Driscoll's 1st time beating a tier 1 SH nation in the SH.

Delighted by the win. But I think the Irish fans are getting ahead of themselves. Good forward performance but any of NZ, SA, France, England or Italy are going to put up far better performances than that Aussie pack.

Our backs looked for the most part impotent again (though I must say that Sexton at centre got things going a bit). Looking forward to Gaffney being gone.

Against Russia we need to see McFadden at inside centre and some alternative that isn't earls at outside centre. Kearney needs another match, and let Leamy and Jennings both start and fight it our for the bench spot against Italy.

Thought Reddan was poor today. He seems brainless. Just picks a direction before he gets to the ruck and passes it that way regardless of what's going on around him.

Can't really blame Reddan though for Lawrence getting in his way making him turn into an offside Vickerman and then some how turning the ball over. The scrum calls were strange sometimes but that was just a bit special...

I don't think there's a problem with their backline bar the exclusion of Digby due to injury. Whenever the Wallabies got the ball in hand i felt nervous in fear of a try being scored but what let them down was the continuity in their play. They couldn't seem to bind simple phases together.

And the funny thing is, Ireland is my least favourite side after Aus because of a certain Lions tour incident including one of the Irish players, but I found myself right in behind the men in green as if they were my second team.
Was that when BOD tried to commit suicide and everyone blamed it on Umaga?

Two things puzzling me:
- why was Murray's try disallowed?
- why did Sexton slow down in support when Bowe was running for the corner after the intercept?

That was the worst performance Australia have ever given at a world cup

I had $360 on this game

Actually, what's this negativity about Ireland slowing down the ball from three or four posters.

They gang tackled to hold the player up on regular occasion. Perfectly Legal.

They were aggresive at the rucks. Perfectly Illegal.

Heaslip (or maybe O'Brien) grabbed the scrumhalf once at rucktime. Illegal. He was penalised. didn't happen again.

This was a really clean game ruck-wise, some people just seem to have a set list of complaints that are spouted out after each match. It's boring, please stop.

Offside, apparently, but I don't know who/where

Ireland need to wrap Mike Ross in cotton wool several feet thick, he is absolutely vital to Ireland, more so than BOD/SOB/whoever else
First scrum after he went off Australia won a penalty from it

Ireland's tactic of holding players up in the tackle works incredibly well, and they're very good at it. Against England in the 6N they didn't want to let Ashton/Foden run with the ball, so they shut down the breakdown, and did the same today.

People are just looking for something else to blame because it's a shock for most. tbh, I have never been so disheartened by a Wallaby performance. Honestly Australia are in effect, the worst of the 'top tier' nations (bar Italy) regardless of rankings. We will beat the USA but it will not be comprehensive... SA are already back on track after trashing Fiji, and I would be surprised if Australia can muster up a 15+ point win again this campaign. Out in straight sets come knockouts.

Our tests against Ireland are always close, and I could feel an upset on the cards so I at least came out with a profit... but even $500 can't mend this heart

I'd take the money.

Don't worry. You lot will win the world for sure. I just know it...

Just watched a replay of Tommy Bowe's intercept. If he had looked left he could've cross kicked and there were about 4 Irish players running on with no Aussie defenders in sight. It's just ifs and buts but it should have been spotted and could have been a try.
