Rugby Championship: Argentina - South Africa (25/08/2012)

Makes the challenge of picking a winner between the Boks and Wobbalies hard to predict as both are playing kak rugby....I think OZ would hav to be favs as they at home

Funny how Meyer talks about having breakdown problems, yet he won't include Brussow cos he gives away a lot of penalities! Yet he puts Flip Van Der Merwe who gives away a penalty in his 1st minute on the field! Really now?!

Watch and learn...

1st segment:

Green 7 comes in from the side, ahead of the hindmost part of the ruck. A clear penalty offence. The irony is that he then penalises Argentina for side-entry (so he didn't allow THEM to get away with it as you implied).

2nd segment: starting at 0:23

Green 16 side-entry, and from an offside position to boot. He has to move along behind the offside line and come in from directly behind the ruck, not at the 45° angle. Not so clear this one, but a penalty offence nonetheless.

Walsh missed both of these when they happened right in front of him.

yeah that 2n one was strange and very bad call. very clearly in the side under walshes nose

I think the springboks were very lucky to get away with the draw.

Unlucky result for the Argies; should've won that.

In no way surprising to me at all. Totally expecting an extremely close contest against the All Blacks.

I just hope the audio and camera will be better next time around, anyone know why it was so poor this time? It didn't look like Supersport's usual stuff and oh wow was the camera angles they used horrible. Might seem like I'm full of crap but really at one time I thought it was going to give me a headache.

Perhaps Supersport were using the Argentine camera feed?

I agree with the odd angles, most likely it was the stadium broadcast facilities that were poor, my feed also went down during the argie try which angered me greatly. I didn't get great audio either it seemed the crowd volume was turned down in favour the commentators mic's.

Meh.

Something needs to change with SA rugby at the moment. I am a big fan of HM and all that he's accomplished, but I feel like we are stagnating. The team looks tired, the players seem to lack passion and our game plan just isn't working something needs to change. I understand that we're in a rebuilding phase, but I don't feel like anything is actually being built. I feel like we are clinging to our old attitudes and styles and we're simply being left behind, what exactly are we building towards? It feels like the SA team is tired and dying where we should be working towards something fresh and new something that can really be great.

Does anyone actually think we are even trying to be the best team in the world at the moment? Of course not. We are the only nation that realistically has the talent to challenge NZ and I just feel like we aren't going in the right direction it's gotten to the point where my mates and I don't want to talk about the SA side as it just makes us depressed.

We need to stop clinging to the supposed "glory days" of 2007 and try something new, in many ways HM was the best choice of coach but in other ways he was the worst to bring us where we need to be. We might beat Aus at home, we might even beat them away (A wounded team that's missing some VITAL elements) but is that good enough? Is that really what we're going to settle for? Aus's sporting talent is split between about 4 other sports that they prefer. All our money and infrastructure goes to union we need to do better.

Anyway sorry for the depressing post but I'm just not a happy panda at the moment.

SA seems to going in the direction of Ireland. Solid club teams, but lackluster national side. The talent is obviously there, but for whatever reason (coaching, personalities) it doesn't come together.

I remember the days when many Springbok fans were wanting Morne Steyn to get picked for the squad (myself included), and just never seemed to get a look in. Now we can't get rid of the guy....

AIUI, the feed came from RTA's Canal Siete (Channel 7) with South African commentators spliced into the feed. That's what we got in NZ anyway. I imagine we'll get Phil Kearns and his mates when the Wobblies play there, and our guys when we play, but the feed will still come from RTA.

As for that angles, you'll probably find that the cameramen are more used to covering Football, because some of those angles looked like the ones you would get in a Football match

This was a really kak game to watch and If you were a sharks or WP fan, even worse after your teams also lost in the Currie Cup. My thoughts on the game:

We were outbullied... Plain and simple. As the Newspapers so aptly put it yesterday: "Marcell Coetzee was like a child looking around how big men are supposed to play rugby". Everyone giving flak to Jacques Potgieter i think is a bit unjust, he was one of the very few forwards who stood up to the Argies bully antics.

In the forwards I thought our front row did okay, except for the terrible miscommunication at lineout time between Strauss and Bekker. Speaking of Bekker, he was our biggest liability. he missed so many tackles, lost the ball nearly every time he made a run, and at lineout time he was awful! he's 2.08m why not stand in front of the lineout and just throw it to him every time???

Hougaard had an average game, and took too long at the breakdowns to get the ball out. Morne Steyn was again quiet, and the clear tactic which worked so well the week before with the up-and-unders and chasing would have worked a lot better if there was actually chasers!!! there was no communication in the backline. If Steyn or Kirchner sent the bomb up, it looked like the guys didn't know who should chase, who should hold the line or who should follow up. I was the most dissapointed with Mvovo, he got a lot more ball than Habana IMO but should much less of a threat and on numerous times his chasing was very poor. Why play the kick and chase game if you don't have wingers that can play that gameplay. Bjorn Basson and Aplon would have had a field day.

Our Scrums was solid, especially vs the Pumas in Argentina, and it looked to me as though the Argies struggled and wasted a lot of time setting up and engaging and again jumping the gun too quickly.

Let's give credit where it is due though, the Argies was very impressive, but this game plan won't last very long as they play spoil tactics. Steve Walsh missed a few calls both ways. He missed a lot of that at ruck time when argentina players would make a tackle, then roll forward, and just lay there in the way of Hougaard and not letting him get his passes out.

Our props did okay. Our Hookers, well, we have no choice left here. Locks, Bekker needs to step up or step out, as well as Flip. Juandre Kruger, Anton Bresler needs a go. Flankers, for once they had a poor game, but we do need a fetcher, just don't think Daniel is the correct guy for the job. Brussouw or Flouw.

Ruan Pienaar should be choice no. 1 for SH. Morne should get a rest, Lambie and Goosen are ready!! Centres, meh... Wingers, against Aus we'll probably try a more expansive route as we are much faster than them so brace yourselves. Fullback, yeah where's Ludick or Aplon or Viljoen or Le Roux or Lambie or whoever else... hell even Clayton Blommetjies sounds better right now.

Good game to watch (in the pub). Argentina showed some creativity and really interrupted the physical powerplay of SA.
SA on the other hand didn't really showed any gameplan and should be happy that that last drop goal attempt was an utter failure.
A fair result at the end of the night. I hope Argentina continues to bring this level of rugby and hopefully the end 3rd on the table.

Come one bok fans, where is the faith?? you lost because the pitch was smaller ;) lmk

Hougaard is not a scrum half, well a starting one anyway. He should start on the wing or come off the bench as a scrumhalf to speed up the game.

The Pumas are known to be dark horses, so this result is no surprise to me as well. Mitchells ABs almost lost to them in Argentina, the have drawn the ABs in the past.

Unfortunate at the end for the Pumas, dissapointment for the Boks, maybe a tad bit embarassment for the Boks as well but a lesson well learned for them. Good to see Frans Steyn back.
