Ernst Joubert Saracens No.8 is keen to represent England when he qualifies on residency grounds later this year.

The 31-year-old South African will complete his mandatory stay at the end of June, after the summer tour to his homeland, meaning that he will be available for selection by Stuart Lancaster come England's November internationals.

So he is eligible, but the big question is: Is he good enough to be selected?

I don't know what the depth is for his position in England and where he is in the picking order

What would be the point of giving a 1st cap to a 31 y/o foreigner? Complete non story, and Lancaster wouldn't pick him in a million years.

He hasn't really got a chance. Morgan and Waldrom will be taken into squads as the specialist 8s, with Haskell and Robshaw providing cover and youngsters gradually brought in. I think we're more than adequately covered.

no point now. he was the best 8 in the prem last season, but he hasn't quite reached that level this year. Anyway, he's now 31 and we've got Morgan, not to mention he's South African.

Wants one - as they're handing them out, is it?

He was an absolute try machine last year, but there's absolutely no point displacing Morgan.

Hopefully Lancaster will steer away from capping foreigners with no potential for 2015

3 year residency is a joke. 5 years would make more sense. Like everyone else has said, was a great player last year, but would have to morph into Sergio Parisse to even be in with a shout of getting an England cap.

England would look more like a Premiership Select XV than an English XV if they picked everyone who 'declared' for them.

Oh come on guys... Are you that naive??

of course they'll pick him BECAUSE he's a foreigner!!

Brad Barritt, Manu Tuilagi, Matt Stevens, Mouritz Botha, Alex Corbisiero, Mike Catt, Andrew Strauss, Kevin Pietersen, Jonathan Trott, Matt Prior, Matthew Hoggard...

A: with their parents...

Hoggard? Do me a flavour. He's as pure a Yorkshiremen as you could get. Andrew Strauss too, he's a stereotypical English Public schoolboy. Same with Prior and as far as Trott and KP go they have been playing cricket in England for well over a decade, accent aside theyre as South African as I am.

Oh didn't realise you were born in South Africa? Or had South African parents? Or represented us at age group level?

Hoggard was born in Leeds. You know, that well know district of Durban... *cough*

Dude Hoggard is 100% Yorkshire. I knew Pudsey, Leeds was a dump but never knew it was a Township in South Africa!!!

And anyway this is a non story. Joubert is 1) too old and 2) too far left field to be picked for England. He said "oh gee, I'd love to play for England if they wanted me and if they have Ben Morgan, Phil Dowson and goodness knows who else being worshipped (and quite rightly too on the back of some excellent performances) then I seriously doubt that call will ever happen.

Nothing to see here. Move along.

EDIT: And at the end of the day if South Africa actually bothered to manage its talent properly then it wouldn't have an exodus of decent players in all sports going abroad. It still boggles the mind that guys like Pietersen and Trott were basically told to GTFO.

Yeah well, we aren't much in the business of having douchebags and pricks as role models...

So far from the truth it's ridiculous. The reason Pietersen is playing for England is because he thought he was better than he actual was and blamed the quota system for not being picked, news flash KP.....you were not good enough (at the time I might add). Trott's case is simple, he left to play county cricket (like many players choose to do), became eligible for England and decided to play for them...end of story.

It is also not a case of us managing our talent properly, it's a case of players not quite good enough for our National team go oversease because they obviously have a better chance being picked by weaker National teams.. eg. Barrit playing for England.

Yup.
Luke Rooney said he wanted to play for England in the 2011 World Cup, because his Mum is English, no one gave that a second thought.
