I think everybody knows that Declan Kidney will pick Ronan O'Gara to start with Paddy Jackson on the bench against Scotland in the event of Jonny Sexton being unfit. If you were the coach, who would you pick out of O'Gara, Jackson, Ian Keatley and Ian Madigan?

Trying to be fair, each has their plus points.....

O'Gara is very experienced and has the most tactical nous of all the contenders and brings a good passing game to the table. The negatives are very poor form, he sits too deep in the pocket, lack of range in his tactical kicking and an inability to break and tackle competently.

Jackson reminds me of a younger O'Gara circa 2000. He always has time on the ball, brings players into the game and is a solid kicker for field position and, more often than not, at goal too. What he lacks is confidence and the ability to take the game by the scruff of the neck.

Madigan is the best attacking threat of the lot, he passes brilliantly, his goal kicking stats are over 80% this season, he has a massive boot and he's been learning from Sexton and Joe Schmidt for the last few years. His negatives are his tactical kicking, he's prone to brain farts and he only has one start at 10 at Heineken Cup level.

A lot of Keatley's strengths and weaknesses are the same as Madigan's. While his strengths aren't as pronounced as Madigan, neither are his weaknesses.

All things considered, I'd go with Madigan to start and Jackson on the bench. Madigan outplayed Jackson despite being beind a beaten pack in Ravenhill 6 weeks ago, he has the attitude to thrive at international and he's become a leader for Leinster whenever he starts. O'Gara is yesterday's man. Keatley becomes an option once he supplants O'Gara but not before then. You could argue the same about Madigan supplanting Sexton but Sexton is twice the player O'Gara is

Id go with Madigan also...
IMO he's the best attacking outhalf in Ireland, and has been knocking on the door for a while now. His try scoring stats for lasts seasons Rabo were crazy for a first five, and despite not reaching the same heights this season hes grown as a player and deserves a shot.

I too would go with Magigan and Jackson on the bench. Unless Kidney puts ****ing Earls at 10.

The thing I would say though is Jackson is the best defensively out of the lot, he makes good solid hits and rarely concedes ground. He used to play 12 occasionally and he's quite bulky, rarely gets brushed aside. I don't know if he could cope with the pressure though, 2012 HC final shouldn't count as it was his first proper season.

He's named in the extended Ulster squad for this weekend so I presume so.

Does not necessarily mean he will be, Mincer's in the squad too but he's very much a doubt to play. I'm almost half-expecting Kidney to give Wallace the call actually, with a weird little smile and a chat about how you need experience.

Anyway, Madigan's sharp, Jackson's probably a little rusty on account of struggling through an ankle knock recently, so that's the way I'd do it.

After an interesting weekend for me I may start a campaign to bring Mick Quinn back.

Paddy Wallace was coaching in our school last week, apparently in real life he looks huge compared to what he looks like on TV, I wonder what players like Ferris are like in person.
I highly doubt he'll get a call up though.

Jackson I'd say is the future, is playing at a higher level and I don't really count rabo level for shite as Jackson normally ups the gears during the HC and he does has an attacking spark always trying the step. I would actually want him to start.
I mean look at this try and this was in his first season so impressive ****. I rate him highly now even if the last few games have been dire because when he clicks he really clicks

Paddy Jackson is in a poor run of form at the minute (outside of 10 mins vs. Castres) IMO. A test match behind Conor Murray's geriatric service probably isn't what the doctor ordered right now.

I would go with Madigan... but have Reddan at 9. That gives you Leinster players inside and out, so it is more comfortable for IM.

On the bench I'd have Keatley - for the same reason I would have had him on the bench on Sunday. Can cover 10, 12 and 15. Fast enough to cover 11 and 14 if desperate.

There is another option no-one has yet mentioned... Gareth Steenson. edit: which would mean Deccie kidney thinking outside the box.... Does anyone know if Radge has any brothers....?

I spotted Davy Humphries and Eric Elwood both in the football boot section of SportsDirect earlier today...

Make of that what you will. ;)

Steenson probably has the best mix of age, experience and form - but has played no international rugby. Would make a reasonable stop gap for a must win game/rest of the tournament.

I dearly hope Steenson gets nowhere near the Ireland team. Can't tackle, can't pass, can't get a back line moving. Kicks goals and that's it. Picking Steenson would be an admission that you're reverting to staid 10 man rugby.

Exeter have scored a brave few tries this year... and they haven't all been coming from prop forwards.

But, for the sake of argument, if we put that to one side for a second.... even if Steenson can't tackle, can't pass and can't get a backline moving, he is young enough to be around for the next world cup so is still a step up on the current incumbent.

Might as well stick McKeon in really build for the future.
He's class, isn't he? Big future ahead of him. Hope he gets an academy deal next year.

I suppose so! I think Jackson, Madigan and Keatley all have more talent, are younger and playing better than Steenson. Nothing against Steenson who's carved out a good career for himself but he's not international class nor will he ever be in my opinion. He's a solid player who can do a job for a mid ranking club team.

What about Ian Humps :D ojay although hear he was playing some good **** early season, think he is injured now
