EOYT: Scotland v AIG All Blacks, 11/11/2012

Sooooo sllllloooooowoooooooooowwwwwwww now. :(

Richie McCaw playing the ball in the ruck shock!

Cuthbert doesn't play league.

I mean, Tuilagi and Faletau have grown up in the UK, played all of their rugby here. Their entire families have resided as well. I think Faletau moved to Wales when he was ~7, he will be 22 tomorrow, so that is 2/3 in the UK.

So? If I were to move to NZ tomorrow and lived there until I turn 90, it wouldn't make me a Kiwi. Would make me an Emglish who's spent 2/3 of his life in New Zealand.

Is there a line that you are willing to draw?

An example, perhaps, of a person with no blood lineage that you would consider an adopted national?

That's precisely the cobblers we currently call "residency".

You cannot choose your heritage or nationality. No more then you can choose your skin colour or preference between men and women. Its not a slight on a "human right" to tell Belgian he cannot be Spanish, no matter how much he reeeeealy wants to be.

Anyone who believes otherwise frankly is a ****ing idiot.

You would be content telling someone who was born in Guernsey (to British parents), grew up in say France, doesn't speak a word of English (figuratively speaking), knows nothing about the state and has no affections for it, that he is British, and can only represent a Home Nation?

Mate, I wish you were in charge of Student Finance England, that way they would have let me have a tuition fees loan!

Don't be silly. Nationhood is an invented concept. Comparing it to race is nonsensical. As an example, is a person from Southern Somalia Somalian or Southern Somalian? Country wasn't in existence until last year or so, so they must be choosing to be Southern Somalian then eh?

Nationhood isn't a hard wired biological precept like the things you've mentioned above. If geopolitics is variable, then a person's nationality must also be variable.

As far as I'm concerned you can call yourself whatever you want. The idea that one's nationality sets them apart from the rest of the world on some fundamental level is a dangerous train of thought.

I thought for sure they'd get their 40...got to 51, oh well.
Scotland was far from pathetic in this one against the might AB's though. Hey, 3 tries and 22pts, still...
But the second half, especially towards the end...just no more juice in those Scottish hammered bodies, but the first half was quite impressive.
I like this Scottish side, but they of course lack a bit of consistency (can be very exciting on attack, but then be absent or uncreative for the next 20min) in their quality. But they've got potential, and again were far from "small" against NZ at full strength with Carter, McCaw and co.

P.S.: and I mean Carter is ridiculous on his own. The guy goes 9/10 kicking, so the score looks super inflated.

If nationhood is an invented concept therefore irrelivent, international sport based entirely upon 2 nations competing against each other, supposedly teaming together the cream of that nations home grown talent, is also ********.

Oh, hold on...

Having followed Ireland for the past 3 seasons I'm fully of the opinion the international rugby is a load of ******** ;)

Because someone with those particular circumstanses would not have any knowledge or upbringing regarding their britishness. Being born on a British island to British parents..

Fuggin stupid analogy

How do you think I feel about club rugby?

So? If I were to move to NZ tomorrow and lived there until I turn 90, it wouldn't make me a Kiwi. Would make me an Emglish who's spent 2/3 of his life in New Zealand.

Faletau has been in Wales for pretty much as long has he can remember.
It seems like it is really a case-by-case basis, but that simply isn't practical.

Awesome stuff by Scotland. That late savea try was a beauty. Good afternoon out in the pub.

Hardly. I know plenty of Saffas of nearly identical circumstances (bar language of course) that were born in the UK and the only reason why some of them could point the UK out on a map of Europe is because they know it is an island.

You would first have to tell them it is a map of Europe of course...

Person A (not born in Britain) moves to Britain at 6 months old, has no British parents, lives in Britain for the rest of their lives, and dies on their deathbed as a ****ing idiot for believing they're a Briton.
Person B (born in Britain) moves away from Britain at 6 months old, has British parents, lives in X for the rest of their lives, and dies on their deathbed as the homegrown pride of Britain.

I hope you can see how wrong this is...

Person a moves at 30 years old. Person b moves at 6 months old. There is no difference in any other circumstances. Unless its a weak attempt to justify cherry picking randoms from all over the world to Represent a national side.

The world isn't black and white Mite. Your opinion is an incredibly naive one imo. Some people are brought up with an incredibly strong national identity. Even if I had moved away at 1 years old, my parents' national pride would have probably meant that I would have always considered myself Welsh. However, plenty of people aren't brought up in the same way. My g/f was born in Essex to an English mother and Belgian father, neither of which are at all patriotic. They moved to Wales when my g/f was 3, and she considers herself completely Welsh now. Who are you to say she is wrong?

Now whether 3 years, or even 6 years etc. is enough is certainly debatable.
