England vs Wales - 06/08/2011 - RWC Warm Up

interesting that Walsh suddenly decides that he should call people offside in the last 12 mins!

Pleased on how we've kept on at England, been rewarded with a couple of tries. You never know now....

Gone are the days of draw and give, didnt think ryan was ever gonna give that ball. Cracking tackle on warburton. Exiting last 5

underwhelming for both of us I reckon. Shows how poor strength in depth is!

Disappointed at that on the whole

Though there were some positives:
Armitage looked good,
Tuilagi stepped up
Wilko was pretty good
Care was alright
Stevens was pretty good

Banahan was completely sh** - however he'll start a truck load of games on the wing or at centre
Wouldn't be surprised to see him at 12 with Tuilagi at 13, then when it's shocking because of Banahan, Tuilagi will be dropped

Special shout out to Wilko who didn't get injured

Pretty bitter comments olly?

England dominated parts of the game and then due to whatever, subs, fell asleep. Was happy with Armitage he has shown he's a good player, Wilko needs to play the next game aswell and he will be even better. Tuilagi couple of mistakes but overall very good. Banahan did what he was supposed to do, wasen't bad wasen't good. Haskell did oke as nr.8.
Care's passing was really bad, took alot of go-forward out of England's attack. It was also good to see Flutey back, needs to play more Rugby! Hape should be out!
Scrum was still solid and should've got some more penalties. Next week bring on Cole and Sheridan!

Alot of positives for Wales here, they looked more organised and patient than before. Standout players were: Warburton, North and Priestland. Gonna be one hell of a game next week, England will have to wake up and keep going for the full 80min if they want to win.

Disappointed with the loss no doubt, but not as bad as I thought it would be.
-Bennett was passable today, I still don't want to rely on him in NZ.
-Phillips wasn't great, but much better than his last match v England.
-Priestland did well, looked confident and showed some good skill today.
-Faletau was mixed; did well at the back of the scrum but his ball handling was poor. I'd go with Delve next week (if fit) to give us some choice.
-North seems to have learned not always to step outside, good match from him.
-Midfield was scattered, but Roberts stood out. Good defence and had a few good carries. Davies is still not there yet.

Wilkinson MotM? Had a very good, steady game (as usual) and kept England together.

Finallly, gutted for Morgan, wishing him a speedy recovery.

Overall an average game, but displayed some positives for us. Gotta give huge credit to Priestland for stepping up, thought he had a solid game and showed that we have an alternate "running" 10 to Hook. Thought Knoyle was sharp when he came on (except for that dire attempt of a quick tap).

Our Ball retention in opposition half was generally quite good, and we showed that we could finish off chances by going through phases (although we should have scored 1 or 2 more tries - likewise for england also i guess).

Nice to see Jamie Roberts putting in a tidy performance (although I never seen anything as ridiculous as his "tackle" on Shane).

Overall i think Wales will be the more confident going into next week with the way the game ended. Should be an interesting week ahead.
Bring back la GAV!!!

Agree with all that. Better performance than i thought from Wales. Hope we can build on this well.

Aye, I thought Bennet was alright this match - his pick and goes in the 22 were the best of any forward on the pitch, made a couple of metres at least each go, even with numerous players hanging off of him

The Roberts v Shane thing was more to do with Shane from what I saw. There were 3/4 men outside of Shane and he instead chose to run across, into Roberts who was waiting for the ball.
Shane crabbed a few other times so I think it was more to do with him than Roberts.
Warburton was again immense, full time captain soon?

Also, again I was very impressed with Scott Williams. Decent sized lad with good pace. I think he is going to New Zealand.

Well thats that then. Disappointed to not see England play much real rugby in the 2nd half but thats just the game sometimes. A win is a win etc. I think bearing in mind that Wales side today was probably closer to their first choice team then englands team today was, they'll be happy with the win. Besides, if this game was about filling in the missing pieces and working for those few last places then the game was a useful exercise in that we saw that people like Stevens and Armitage and tuilagi really do deserve their places in the squad. what is more worrying is the way we fell away at the end and our replacements were not able to get us more on the front foot.

Overall positives: Wilkinsons game management, opportunism etc still there
Strength brought to the scrum by Stevens.
Haskell looked alright at 8.
Armitage back to his best! I take back my criticism of him...for now.
Cueto looking lively and finding the holes.
Tuilagi and Sharples looking great on the field.

worries: Shaw becoming more and more static by the day. As people have said he is too static and gets bashed back abit when he first gets the ball. Made up for somewhat by a good step and ability to change the poing of attack. But he needs to take a leaf out of dallaglio's book( by the end of D's career he was pretty much falling over already when he took the ball on, but at least he was falling over forwards!
The 10-12-13 channel with Wilkinson there. it wasnt quite right, the timing wasn't there whenever we did any sort of loop movement, perhaps the loop trajectory going too wide and sliding across a bit too much.
letting opposition back into the game when we bring on subs.
Banahan. He's always goign to be useful when he gts a bit of space and is moving forwards because of his size, and he does have some skills, but i'm not sure he's the right man for a tight game. Still, he's much better on the wing than in the centre.

We'll need slightly more than that today if we're going to win away next week...

I thought that was a pretty poor performance from England:

Lack penetration

No one running lines from deep

Players taking the ball standing still

Predicatable

Slow ball at thew ruck

I thought Wales looked far more likley to score and broke the gain line much more easily than the English. They generally looked sharper, more creative and more dangerious with ball in hand.

Enlgand would have been beated by 30-40 points if they had payed like that against the big three.

Well done Wales for a strong come back - I predict a good win for them at the Millenium stadium next weekend.

I don't think so

I agree about Wales looking more likely to score - Every time Wales got into the England 22 they looked like they were going to score a try, whereas whenever England got into the Wales 22 they looked like they were going to go through 100 phases and not really get anywhere

missed the first half, at work. got back and watched our 22m line for half an hour. still, a win is a win.

based on what i saw, what i said about our slowest wing pair in history seems to have stuck true. Cueto skinned by Shane for the try, Banahan putting a good kick through then being beaten to it by a fat Davies-shaped centre on the turn. Since Banahan has no brain and his offloading 'ability' only exists because people want to make him out to be some kind of English SBW, he can **** right off. I've seen enough of him now to know, 100%, without any measure of bias, that he's not a test match 11, 12, 13 or 14. Or even 22. His England career is full of nothing versus meaningful opposition at meaningful times.

Otherwise, everyone else seemed to be in 2nd gear after the Tuilagi try, with two outstanding trysavers from Wood and Armitage being the only real positives.

Happy how well Priestland stepped up, and Warburton was immense! Pretty dissapointed with Faletau, did'nt really notice him playing most the match. And as always, we get better when Phillips leaves the field.

Urgh, just seen Stoddarts leg break on youtube - His leg folded in half partway up the shin
