Champions Cup - Pool 4, Round 5 (Bath, Glasgow, Montpellier, Toulouse)

If you say so, I will agree about what the penalty was actually given for as my memory is not great!

I saw the game live in the Corporals Club TV lounge at RNZAF Whenuapai in the wee small hours of that Sunday morning 36 years ago. I remember it like it was yesterday.

My point was that there was play acting many years ago and this is not in dispute.

The diving out of the line-out trick is actually one that Taranaki used to use against King Country to combat the effectiveness of one of their players; a certain C. Meads if I recall correctly. Nothing new in that. Its was around for 10 years or more before 1978.

Also, it wasn't the first time in that match that a player took a dive. The Welsh right-wing, Williams (can't remember which one, JJ or JPR) went down in a heap in the first half claiming that he was tripped by BG Williams. BeeGee's feet were nowhere near him; but the Welsh still got a penalty from which Ray Gravell kicked a goal.

(Come to think of it, it must have been JJ Williams because Mr Sideburns would have been fullback.

Incidentally, your sarcasm toward me was quite unnecessary.

Sorry, just joshin' ya!

Although there is no interest in this game for Montpelier they do need the win to reinstore confidence and get back to winning ways
on the other hand Toulouse need to win to qualify and therefore this could be a cracking match, not a great lover of Sunday matches but thats life

David Flatman on BT just said Glasgow are struggling at 6, 7 & 8, have they got injury troubles?

Is Watson carrying an injury? He looks a lot slower this season than he has previously.
Maybe they've bulked him up too much, like what happened to Matt Tait when he started playing for England?

Eastmond with an arm(?) injury very early on.

Strange that Devoto came on instead of Burgess.

Also I really really wish Flatman would shut up - 80 minutes of him rubbing his legs together over Bath. Not sure I can take it....

I only really just realised that London Irish have replaced Homer with Maitland.
That really is an outstanding bit of business.

Second time we've been done round the edges of the lineout. We really really need to work on lineout defence, we seem vulnerable to both catch and drive and ball off the top this season. Two great lines from Dunbar though

Can tell Ford moved daahn saaahf if that smack in the face was enough to put him on his rump :p

Bath their own worst enemy at the moment. Trying to force the game whilst Glasgow mostly doing the basics properly. Brilliant scrum that won't weaken with replacements but Bath not getting much from it. Banahan brilliant in the air again.

The exciting throw it wide stuff is all well and good, and great when it works, but where is plan B? I'd like to see a bit more tactical kicking and a bit more of a platform from power runners. The old "earn the right" cliche

Except that is a myth.

Yes, Haden dived out of the lineout, but the penalty wasn't awarded for that. It was awarded against the Welsh Lock Geoff Wheel for jumping in the line-out by levering off Frank Oliver's shoulder. The referee, Roger Quittenden clearly pointed to Wheel and spoke to him as he made the secondary signal, a bent elbow pushing down, which in those days meant "Jumping or levering off the opponent's shoulder".

From his position on the Welsh side of the line-out, its doubtful if he could have even seen Haden's gold medal winning dive, and its doubtful, even if he had seen it, that he would have awarded a penalty for it unless he saw Jeff Squire push him out.

Roger died in 2013. He has always maintained that he never saw Haden fall out, and that he penalised Wheel.

However, you carry on Tony. Don't let the truth get in the way a good story.

Of course Roger isn't going to admit that he made a mistake which denied Wales a most historic of victories. In my mind there is no doubt that it was cheating, the Welsh Lock jumping excuse is a scapegoat - but then i would say that wouldn't I? Just like you're clearly convinced it is a myth contrary to popular consensus.

Which is exactly why the bath model won't work for England.

Think bath need burgess on.

Considering Glasgow have a hooker and a centre in their backrow, they're doing very well.

Edit:
I really thought they were going to scrap that try!
Fair play to the TMO for using his noggin :D

Some great kicking from Ford...

Compare to Cipriani who has the best completion rate of any kicker (that has 10+ attempts) in Europe this season.

Tell you what if Toulouse get to win this dreadful match, they will be the most popular visitors in the quarters!

They have no structure, no penetration, poor front row, lack of fitness and little desire!

They need a total overhaul and Noves is NOT the man to do it......says he who has been saying this for two years!!!

Incidentally, McAllister was so c@rap, he was subbed at half time!!
