Battle of the worst anthems

obviously amhran na bhfiann is my favourite anthem followed by flower of scotland. also like the welsh one (im not even going to attempt to spell that ). i ....... dislike irelands call

I luv Englands anthem.... cuz I support their national football team since 4 ever :D

then I like Ireland and NZ...

I must say SA anthem suck :D... that anthem doesn't motivate you like the previous 3 i mentioned... instead it makes you sleepy :D

That has to be hard :p?

Absolutely, a good socialist anthem sneaking in to replace the royalist/imperialist claptrap that is GSTQ

Can't say I think of it as socialist. Christ, I think of its as the woman's institute before I think of it is as socialist. But then everyone will have their own memories of what it is.

Whatever, it is English. Quintessentially and beautifully so. It makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck.

If we can't have that, I vote for the Imperial March. It sounds badass and it fits, as we too are an evil empire who goes to the fight dressed in white. With terrible accuracy.

Bonus points if we can have Martin Johnson dress up as Darth Vader and sneak up behind members of the crowd before whispering "I find your lack of faith... disturbing"

That's the hilarious thing. That bit has been adopted by the Women's Institute. People only tend to hear the England's Green and Pleasant Land bit.

William Blake was a screaming leftie, and if not socialist in the marxist sense, it is a song of the downtrodden. Its basically about not "ceasing from endless strife" until the people have been freed from the "dark satanic mills" and we've built Jerusalem (a people's republic) in England.

You make a valid point about Blake's personal views - but the resonance of songs change. It is no longer the sole property of the socialists and it has been adopted by so many as the struggle to build a better England resonates with us all. Not in spite of it, but because of it.

I love the part of the Argie anthem when they actually sing.

Does anyone know what the point is of the whole, long build-up to when it is a song as opposed to a... the name escapes me, but you know what I mean.

The idea of Imperial March is a great one, kinda hard to sing to though, will be a massive humming session...

What exactly is the Imperial March in regards to England? I tried a YouTube search and all I got was this:

I would love to get rid of GSTQ and replace it with Land of Hope and Glory. Also can we all stop singing swing low sweet chariot? its embarrassing.

French, USA, Russia, Italy are all good anthems.

The worst apart from GSTQ are Irelands call and the aussie one.

Soooo predictable. Don't you ever get tired of your moaning and *****ing? We get it now, New Zealand good, South Africa bad. It's pathetic the way you are acting. Let it go.

Stop bullying the "special" kids Ezequiel! It's not a fair fight, it's like winning a debate against an amoeba.

But on topic anyway, I also quite like Flower of Scotland but agreed with someone who mentioned Scotland the Brave. That's just awesome! Anyway I like our anthem, mixed languages and all you get shivers down your spine when the crowd sings along.

But I'm just weird and not an utter twat like someone, not mentioning any names *cough*icemn*cough*. Err... oops.

One thing I love about listening to the SA anthem in the rugby stadia is it becomes kind of a remix

Always pitching at Afrika for the first two verses, with ose booloooooke oooooohh, and mumbling in general.
Then it hits the Afrikaans part, and you would swear the amount of people in the stadium just quadrupled.

Funny stuff watching Afrikaans/ English people trying to speak any form of Zulu or other local languages, brings a smile to ones face.

I wonder if any New Zealanders have similar problems with the non-english* parts of their anthem?

* No malice intended, I just don't know the correct name for every different language in the world, before some hot-head starts calling me an ignorant, STUPID ***S, etc... ;)

I can just about do the non-English bits of the South African and New Zealand anthem.
Of course Hen Wlad Fu Nhadau is my favourite, but I like the French and Saffa anthem.
Not a fan of Flower of Scotland, GSTQ or either of the Irish anthems.

The Italian and Argentina anthems sound fun, I wish I knew the words!

Maori.

I don't have any trouble with the Maori verse of our national anthem, myself, though I know many who do. Although, at most sporting events other than rugby, they only play one verse instead of two. If being performed vocally it's sung in English, but most of the time it's an instrumental recording.

I get goosebumps when they decide to do the version of the FOS where the instruments cut out. To hear so much noise coming just from people is intimidating and exciting at the same time.

La Marseillaise (France) is*definitely*the best Anthem,*Il Canto degli Italiani (Italy) is also really good, I love Amhran na BhFiann and I don't mind Irelands call and I'm not one of the people who doesn't sing it. Flower of Scotland is a pretty catchy tune, I know the 1st and 3rd verses but that middle one still eludes me.*
