Battle of the worst anthems

I will be singing Flower of Scotland on Saturday, partly cos I like it as an anthem and partly to annoy my flatmate.

Out side of our own I like the Italian one, head-noddingly catchy

On the subject of GSTQ. You may as well get your fill, the next 30-odd years after Lizzie pops her clogs will be GSTK

Actually - i love the South African anthem, it's quite uplifting. Not soo crazy about the NZ anthem in english but the Maori parts I dig.

Of all the anthems that haven't felt like they were uplifting, I'd have to say the Russian Anthem gets me - it's like a Military chant (it may well be - i don't speak russian)

The Italian seems Opera like.
The Irish is fairly boyish and optimistic.
And the NZ is fairly defensive? (not too sure what word suits) -

If you're at the games, you'll know most of the times they're done by a choir and i have to say it's been simply Awesome to see the choirs (NZ choirs) sing other nationalities anthems in their own language...

If you don't like SA that much, I'll be glad to make a small trip up to one of the borders of Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe or Mozambique, and I can personally throw you over the border fence myself. Dinnae worry about the paper work, I'll be sure to bring enough bribe money along.

Scary thing is, I think I would enjoy such a trip very much. Would be extremely gratifying

Think they vaguely fall into 2 camps in that the Gallic/Celtic anthems such as the Welsh and French are great and hugely uplifting whilst the more Anglo/Scot orientated are pretty duff (Eng,Scot,Aus and NZ). The weird one is the Irish with their brilliant tradition of music and song they can have not 1 but 2 plodding anthems.

One plodding anthem which nobody likes, the other on's a tune. Sometimes the rugby crowd are poor at it. The soccer crowd do it far better and naturally the GAA are brilliant at it.

I like South Africa's anthem it sounds awesome, even thou I don't know what they're saying for the 1st bit. I wish they put the lyrics up so that everyone can sing along, cool how on some of the games they had the sign language. I also liked the 'Power Of Four' anthem they do when the British & Irish Lions played
