Battle of the worst anthems

Forget the rugby, is this Saturday's game the battle of the two worst anthems at the RWC.

I quite enjoyed Ireland's Call vs Advance Australia Fair

Much as it pains me to say it the Marseillaise vs Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau could be the best match up.

But heaven protect us from the dreadful dirges that are

God Save the Queen vs Flower of Scotland

I remember watching the 2010 African Cup of Nations, and listening to Mozambique's anthem being played before the match I was sitting there thinking, "What the hell is this?"

Flower of Scotland is pretty stirring stuff ...I am a huge fan of our national anthem Amhran na Bhfiann however.

God Save the Queen can be pretty fantastic when it is sung by tens of thousands in the crowd, as well its relatively short unlike some national anthems. I also like Italy and Russia's anthems.

If you want short, go with Japan's. Shortest one in the world at 11 bars.

The words to it are interesting. Loosely translated, this is what they mean:

I've liked the anthmes this WC. The recordings do take some gloss off it but I perfer that over some 2nd rate 'rock/raggae star' butchery. Ras, Ard, here's looking at you, guys.

Sorry, I don't make it clear. I am in fact an Englishman, I just hate the GSTQ, and I'm really sorry but I just don't think FOS is very good. Apart from 90 mins on saturday, I have absolutely no enmity towards Scotland. Scots vs Wales, Scots vs France, Scots vs most countries, I'm there in the dark blue. I just can't bear FOS.

I like God save the Queen the song, don't like what is says or what is stands for though. Should be Land of hope and Glory for me.

Personally, I'd like to see Jerusalem adopted as England's national anthem for sporting occasions. Ok with God save the Queen for the UK/GB and NI but it should not represent England on its own, and certainly not when England play Wales/Scotland/Ireland.

I must say SA anthem suck ... that anthem doesn't motivate you like the previous 3 i mentioned... instead it makes you sleepy

Flower of Scotland is brilliant. I sing it when I'm out, I sing it when I'm washing. I think it's brilliant. I find myself humming the french one fairly regularlt too. Argentinina one rocks lobster also.

GSTQ is awful but this world cup I've found its much better if you ignore the words and listen to sounds. The Romanian anthem is incredible.

Absolutely, a good socialist anthem sneaking in to replace the royalist/imperialist claptrap that is GSTQ

GSTQ us by far the best (and still has official status in Canada!). Not a huge fan of Flower of Scotland though, would prefer Scotland the brave.

Worst has to be Japan, just sounds depressing.
