As a squad, it's very experimental. Probably too experimental a year out from a World Cup. By selection, really not that much has changed. Very much feels like what England should have been doing in 2020.

That reminds me how much of a cock socket EJ has been with his backs selections-Willie Heinz FFS not that the lad was a bad player more the wasted time to get others caps. Minus TH there's been good depth for a while in the forwards.

I would argue without injuries you would have Sinks Slade Manu Watson in place of Schickerling Dingwall Porter BigJoe. Which on paper at least does make the squad look healthier. Nothat manu orwatson can be relied on to stay fit and Slade wouldnt work with Smith Faz and Sinks wasnt on best form but still id have in his case.

How did the squad look like 2018 tour squad v the last RWC squad

Be interesting to see if he's following the similar path

Earle solomona woodward loz cips spencer robson earl hughes robshaw sheilds simmonds hill iseikwe williams all dropped within a year. 15 players made the squad a year out that wernt in it for the WC, so whos on the chopping block for our squad...and who will he bring back?

I think this is why we seem to have the paradoxical claims that Jones chops and changes whilst also saying he doesn't change enough. He chops and changes loads, it's just it tends to be the same players being chopped and changed the core being completely untouched unless forced. It means new players struggle to get into that core due to constant chopping whilst those in the core will rarely fall out of it due to selection regardless of form. It's the worst of both worlds, essentially 2 different rules for judging players depending on if they are in that core group or not.

Couple that with this stubborness and perverse desire to prove everyone else is wrong and he is right by being contrarian at times, I'd be surprised if there isn't a sense of favouritism in the squad that breeds some resentment.

Were some of those 2018 names only there for the pre-tour Barbarians games or something?

On preparation Jones has also wasted plenty of opportunities to try players against teams like the barbarians, Italy and Georgia and selecting first choice players so that younger, less experienced players don't get an opportunity and then this tour when it should be fine tuning, he starts selecting players with limited experience. It smacks of desperation, especially at 9. Yet Jones is solely responsible for the lack of experience. As I said before under Jones you should count minutes played not caps as some players don't actually get enough game time under him.

Look at that RWC 19 squad that reached the final - only 3 of those aren't now available for selection due to retirement / being overseas. Some are now over the hill, been dispensed with or been injured. But the rump of them have been around most of the time and it shouldn't have been too difficult to evolve the team around them, gradually introducing select new blood without performance and / or results tanking.

Unless you take the counter view that we were flipping lucky to reach the final in the first place. Not on the day, the SF win was wholly deserved, but by the law of averages, it was a once in every X year performance. In fact that probably got Jones his contract renewal just as Japan's, again deserved but freak, win over the Boks in 15 sealed his appointment in the first place.

To be fair I think the first four years of Jones' stint were almost as successful as you could possibly ask for, one game off in fact, despite one very bad 6n.

The second four years are looking like they could ve about as bad as you could expect, there's time and talent to turn it around but I equally little reason to hold your breath.

I mean JVP looks like he weighs less than Valetini's legs, but hopefully Jones has come up with a counter to the fairly standard tactic of 'aim the biggest lad at the smallest lad'

What do you mean by 'in scrums'? Are you saying the 8 picking from the base?

Caught a bit of of squad news conference with EJ and Courtney Lawes. It's all 'keep the faith, we're building and developing for the world cup' bla bla bla.

Pig sick of this narrative. Don't know about anyone else but I'd prefer England to win as many games as possible.

As someone else said there's been plenty of fixtures to look at new players and combinations.
