I'm unsure, it would essentially mean you are being taxed twice on your pension

Trump setting the middle east up nicely! Arms race impending... Ironic really that he wants less active involvement, but the US are gonna be forced to prop up an Israeli arms race

Yes, they would pay national insurance contributions on their pension, but those living on state pensions should be exempt IMO. Those wealthier pensioners, with several pensions and paying already the higher rates of tax should pay NI IMO. Pensioners are living longer and sucking a lot of resources out of the social care system, that it's cracking under resources being diverted to their needs and it's those working at present who are picking up the tab. But then this group do turn out in numbers to vote, so I can see this one being difficult to sell.

Something's got to give and the tax system is just not working for all the generations. These are just ideas at present from a Think-tank, but welcome and open to more debate.

The thing is raiding pensions has been the go-to method for governments and private companies as a way to give the illusion of better economic performance. Already retirement ages are being pushed back but I guess I can agree with a pension paying NI contributions as they are also the largest users. Ultimately though more work needs to be done closing loopholes for the ultra wealthy and for those who buy multiple properties rather than pensioners. I'd also say that any changes to pensions should have a time delay on them. Many people plan for their pension for years and the whole thing can be thrown out by the whims of governments or companies messing about with them. You can't react to changes in pension rules in the space of a few years if they are significant.

Yes, I certainly agree on focusing on taxing the ultra wealthy more. The massive corporations like Amazon, Google, Apple are getting away with murder in terms of the tax they are paying. The problem is they are just taking advantage of current tax system and shifting their profits to low tax jurisdictions. They also hire the very best accountants and lawyers to deal with their cases and HMRC then just choose to target the easier, smaller fish. They'll also argue they employ a lot of people and in turn pay a lot of employers' NI. That is in turn an implied threat - change the tax system for them and they'll shift their offices to other countries and in turn jobs are threatened.

The taxing of pensions on the wealthy is already taking place through restriction of the tax relief and allowances on higher earners.

Also on those owning multiple properties - restriction of mortgage interest to claim as tax relief and also removal of wear and tear allowance.

IHT is the one which probably needs biggest reform as it's no longer fit for purpose. No one likes the Tax and relatively speaking it doesn't bring that much into the treasury compared to the other taxes. Still its Revenue that stilll needs replacing.

So now a WH staffer "jokes" about McCain by saying "He's dying anyway". A Fox news guest smears McCain by calling him Songbird McCain and claiming he blurted out all sorts of secrets through torture and therefore torture worked. This is all off the back off Trump saying he wasn't a hero for willingly choosing to stay a POW with his men for 5 years because only "losers" get captured and choosing a new head of the CIA who is pro-torture...

I can understand people having different political opinions but this is genuinely ******* staggering how morally bankrupt the American right wing currently is. People ask how the likes of Nazi Germany happen, you only have to look at just what a huge segment of society fall into this disgusting, divisive and destructive mindset very rapidly when the guy at the top is a complete raving lunatic. I find it hard to fathom how those on the American right can look at themselves and genuinely not see anything wrong with anything they are doing.

Well what's happening in Gaza is a result of what happens when you are a populist and dont actually think through the consequences of your actions. There is a reason every other nation has their embassay in Tel Aviv and now people have died because someone didn't want to understand that reason.

I think he knew people would die (even he can't be that deluded) he just didn't give a f*co because they're not people who like Trump.

May defeated for the 15th time in the House of Lords concerning Brexit and issues around the environment.

East Coast Mainline to be brought back under government control.

What a day in British politics.

Corbyn wants to go back to the 70's. May and co want to go back to the pre-1940's.

Yet another school shooting in USA. Early reports of 8 fatalities. All Trump can tweet is: God bless all.

seriously... did any of you dudes have to think about whether or not you were gonna get shot on in your history class?

do any of who have children worry if your kid won't make it back from class. anyone scared to raise children in the country you live in?

Trump just announced today that his re-election policy would be "Keep America Great"... well we can barely go two ******* months without having a multiple people killed in a school shooting. Since May 10th we've had three separate incidences of gun shuts.

For once though you can't blame this on Trump. It's insane how so many Americans don't see guns as a problem. I remember a video where I guy said why don't we treat guns like cars and let the good people keep them and take them away from the bad people. Obama said that he had come from a national security meeting that morning about a known ISIS sympathiser and that while he could put him on a no fly list, he could not stop him buying a gun because of US laws...

oh without a doubt. guns aren't trump's problem. trump is just the reward we get for being such a terrible place. it seems no politicians have the balls or ovaries to take on the gun lobby (or any lobby for that matter).

Anyone else should come of hearing about Harry and Meghan and this gigantic Royal PR exercise? I for one will avoid it today.

I've managed to avoid most of the chat, to the extent I didn't even realise it was today (presumed it was on the bank holiday next week).

My neighbours have put up a big marquee and are having some sort of tea party in their front garden to celebrate, I don't understand it at all.
