TBF if my name was Ronald Fiddler I'd want some compensation too.
The problem with the compensation is if we'd actually gathered proper intelligence on him in the first place and charged the fella with actual offences instead of illegally detaining him we may have actually saved lives (and saved ourselves 1 million quid in the process).Ok, joking aside (he changed his name when he became Muslim).
How the hell did the security services let him out of the country? The £1m compensation for time in Guantanamo is just salt in the wound. An example that giving such people due process just doesn't work.
The reality also is his time in Guantanamo probably drove him further to this act.
drove him furtherI think that's a little trite, given that he was arrested in Afghan and gave (presumably verified) intel regarding Taliban tactics... he wasn't dabbling.
You chaps are talking in circles about symptoms.
If the 'west' stopped bombing innocent civilian populations on their way to garnering foreign energy resources and/or geographical hegemony, none of this would even be an issue.
drove him further
So Labour keep Stoke (no surprise after UKIP's disastrous campaign) but lost Copeland which is a huge shock to them and the first time that the governing party has gained a by election seat since 1982.
Just saying it didn't help matters and probably made them worse. Not trying to excuse the guy or even suggest he wouldn't done it. Still I do believe in innocent until proven guilty and peoples right to a fair trial before being locked away. Sadly you have to defend that for scum otherwise your going down a slippery slope before true innocent people or dissenters of the government are locked up.Are you saying he became more of a terrorist? Despite being picked up in Afghanistan? What was he on a gap year or something?
Just don't know how this will end Corbyn still defiant despite losing a safe seat during a parties second terms in a by-election. Its not the stuff of good leadership he was lucky Nuttal imploded in Stoke (or as he would say smeared for being held accountable for lies) otherwise he'd have lost that too he's lucky we still have the shambolic FPTP otherwise he'd have probably lost Stoke too.I hadn't even bothered to look at the results and only found out about the loss when surfing the Beeb for something else entirely.
Brings us closer to the Phoenix moment. Don't know what comes next for Labour, but there needs to be a conclusive defeat for Corbyn and a lot of deadwood cleared before something new can emerge. Doubt it emerges from the centre of the party either mind.
