A Political Thread pt. 2

For me it's simple, it should belong to the people who live there. If they choose to be Mauritian, then that's their choice. We shouldn't at the time still have an ex-colonial power deciding who land belongs to. We've had enough wars and issues started because the UK arbitrarily decided who land belongs to.

It's 2020, all over again.

So whilst Republicans are out there turning this natural disaster into a political attack by lying through their teeth about every aspect of it, they are simultaneously voting to block further funding intended to help the relief effort...

My blood boils at what massive ******* ***** the far right in America are. There is no redeeming feature at all, this isn't political differences any more, they people are straight up ******* evil. I know words like that get thrown around lightly but when you are blocking funding for disaster relief whilst simultaneously lying about how poor the disaster relief has been, most of which is in Republican states, there is no reasonable argument that can be made to defend such people. That is just straight up evil.

So James Cleverly lied about receiving free gifts to go to Wimbledon whilst foreign secretary. Not a peep in the media. Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, other than they have now decided that Labour receiving free gifts is a huge deal.

And then you'll have prominent Republicans claim that was hurricane was caused by the Democrats because they can apparently correlate the areas of most destruction with Republican voting areas.

They did the same with the Democrats border control bill. They blocked it purely so they could run an election campaign on uncontrolled immigration and even pushed this 'they're eating pets' narrative based on nothing more than a wild conspiracy theory. Imagine winning an election and claiming you have a mandate based on that.

The worst part is the sheer quantity of right wing voters with apparently zero ability to recognise bullshit who just believe this stuff instantly, then fight tooth and nail against attempts to disprove it.

I have some sympathy for people just being ignorant and getting caught out but believing a single group of migrants are eating pets!? It's a laughably **** story and yet a worryingly large segment of society have accepted it without question and nothing will change their mind. In the developed world many on the right are drifting quite rapidly into a cult like mentality and ditching any sense of reason or morality. Lies and hypocrisy are not only now accepted by actively encouraged.

It's happened here too to a slightly lesser degree and is also happening in Europe. When anyone asks how did so many European nations fall to fascism and dictatorship, what we are seeing now is how. A large segment of society who turn off their brains and whose primary driver becomes trying to harm and undermine others.

This is pretty far from what is happening though - their primary driver becomes the 'safety' of them/their family/their community etc against threats which either don't exist, or are being overplayed by people benefitting from the manipulation.

The presumption of everything and everyone being malicious means you can never really have a debate/try and convince them of reason.

It wouldn't be so bad if the consequences of a Trump win were contained within America but the fate of Ukraine and Palestine is also on the line which is why Netanyahu has deliberately dragged out the war rather than looking for a diplomatic solution and securing the release of the hostages..

I think Netanyahu is dragging it out as he's facing jail time on corruption charges, though I guess the US election is also a factor.

I completely agree with the jist of what you're saying though. Sadly I don't think a Harris win will mean we do what we need to protect Ukraine I also doubt it will have much effect on sorting out any medium to long term solution in Isreal either, sadly. Still, 100% preferable to Trump winning.

I think Harris would at least provide Ukraine with more military aid with a view to prolonging the war, making a fight of it and forcing Putin to wait. Stopping aid would send a terrible and dangerous message that would leave Putin feeling emboldened and hungry for another land grab if he thinks Trump isn't invested in NATO and it's all gotten a bit too essy. The problem is that your average American is more concerned about the cost of living and immigration. Many Americans, largely thanks to Trump's rhetoric, don't see Ukraine as their fight.

Historically American has always worried about themselves more. Europe's problems are Europe's to deal with.

Immigration and the economy are supposedly the two big issues in this election. I think one issue for Harris is she's been part of the government for the last four or so years and if people don't think Immigration and the economy are better now, can they believe she'll improve them over the next 4\5 years.

True with abortion being the third major issue as the Dems target female (especially single) voters.

I think it depends on which party are in power. The Dems are more pro Europe/NATO whereas the Republicans (of late) seems more interested in the middle east/Israel. Not all Republicans feel that way mind as even Mitt Romney was slating Trump after the debate for his comments on abandoning Ukraine. It's Trump's America first shite that is the main problem.

Sorry but no, actively trying to deny people their rights, particularly things like voting, and doing things for the sole purpose of "owning the libs" has no foundation in safety whatsoever.

Storming the capitol had nothing to do with safety. The death threats have nothing to do with safety, denying abortion has nothing to do with safety, refusing to do anything about guns definitely had nothing to do with safety, spreading blatant lies have nothing to do with safety, supporting not funding disaster relief and actively undermining attempts to support those hit have nothing to do with safety. Where is the debate to be had? At some point we need to recognise malice where it exists.

If anything what is being proposed is actively harmful. Families are getting torn apart by the actions of the far right, not protected.
