A Political Thread pt. 2

Not political, but a really good breakdown of the private submarine ***anic story

I mean if this guy is correct, the lack of regulation is mental

It is, but it sounds like that and the risk of death is made very clear on the disclaimer that passengers had to sign. Not sure that makes it much better, but if people are fully informed on the risks then it's up to them whether they choose to accept them.

Just a very sad and painful way to go if they don't find them in the next 40 hours.

Horrendous, hard to imagine anything worse. You hope for a rescue but if that's not to be you hope that these banging noises are red herrings and there was actually a catastrophic incident that happened so fast they knew nothing about it.

Inflation at 8.7%. Strip out energy and food costs and it's still far too high. Food inflation reportedly 16%.

Interest rates going up: bad news for those with big borrowings on variable rate; good news for savers.

Nice one Rishi - I see you're living up to your pledge.
It's a double whammy. On the one hand the Tories are utterly failing (again) to achieve what they said they would. The other side is that we have had below inflation pay rises for the best part of 15 years and now with inflation running rampant, they still demand wage growth be kept below inflation... At some point people's wages must rise above inflation levels or everyone will just continue to get poorer.

I saw a video in which it pointed out the Tory priority at the moment seems to be positioning things so that the major problems will fall just as Labour take office so they can blame them for their failings.

Also my local MP abstained from voting for the Johnson report. I did pen a message but couldn't be arsed to send it in the end as I already knew the bullshit response I'd get having dealt with him before. My local MP is very firmly in the "I don't care what you think, peasant" condescending and aloof prick category.

One scary thing I saw is that even if they did resurface there's literally no way to open it from the inside, as it's all bolted shut externally, so they'd still need to be found before the air ran out

Yep, I saw that too. Whole situation is horrible.

If someone had a bag of 100 skittles and told you 50 of them were poison you'd leave the bag alone wouldn't you. ****, even if there was 1 you wouldn't touch it. By all accounts this expedition sounded 50/50 as to whether they'd comeback alive. If people want to gamble their lives on ******** like that fair play to them but I personally wouldn't really describe it as horrible unless they were forced to do it or weren't told about the dangers. But I'm a prick to be fair and you're probably a nice guy.

You would have thought at the very least there would be a surface vessel to accompany it and plans for what to do if it couldn't resurface... I just can't fathom why someone would take such risks. If I was going in a submarine, I'd want it built by professionals and triple checked with redundancy for all sorts of problems.

I have sympathy for them and certainly don't get a kick out of their mistake but it just seemed pointlessly risky.

Fair point well made.

They took the risk but I don't think the odds were anything like 50:50. If they are dying it's a horrific way to go - trapped in a confined space, in virtually another world, knowing air is running out with little hope of rescue - they'll be as distressed and terrified as it's possible to be, as will their families. From a humanitarian perspective I have every sympathy for all concerned.

Down the line we'll doubtless, and rightly, get into the realms of whether they should have been there on the first place, regulation, lawsuits and costs of search / rescue.

There's a guy on twitter who has been on it previously and he said the dive before his they lost contact with the sub for several hours - it was raised, at the time, that they should add in a tracking beacon....and then they never did

Gotta love operating in international waters!

Ehhhh, I get where you're coming from - but when people on social media are actively celebrating a kid dying a horrible death at the bottom of the ocean because his dad's rich and bought them tickets for this thing I think people are taking it a bit too far
Jesus. Are people really doing that? Yeah that's mad. In fact I didn't know there was a kid. How old was he/she? Extremely irresponsible parenting to let a child do that. Unbelievable.

No idea beyond that he's a teenager - the company have been really sketchy with releasing who was officially on the sub (they won't even say if the CEO was piloting it) but I saw that two of the people are a father and his teenage son

I've been working for 10 mins and already had 2 colleagues ask for my thoughts on the latest Alien stuff doing the rounds. It's quite easy really, if you believe that I have some magic beans to sell you.
Alien stuff?

Alien stuff?
Yeah, there's Aliens on Earth apparently. Well, crazies have been saying this for decades to be fair but this time they're all excited because some guy with a reputable reputation who worked on high level top security stuff for the US government says he spoke to some people who said that governments are covering up alien existence on earth. They found a big **** off space ship the size of a football field and found pilots apparently. It's all a load of ******** obviously but it's got some people very excited.

Yeah I de-followed an acquaintance on twitter over it, conspiracy idiots.

When will people learn the level of conspiracy it requires to keep this **** quiet is simply not possible.

It's why America is a basket case. So many believe in them and are happily being exploited for profit.

That's out of order but in the same token it's literally all over the chuffing news. Every single media outlet is going mad because a bunch of rich people wanted to go on a risky jolly and now they are in the ****.

I don't mind people believing in Aliens. They're very likely to exisit in some far away galaxy I just can't accept people who say they're living among us or have visited earth in the past.

You got to ask yourself why there are peeps who believe in them and aliens etc: to give meaning and purpose to their lives.
