2022 World Cup - Qatar

Couple of thoughts. Some coherent and some not so much.
What i find mind boggling is this: it would have only taken a few key players to stop the world cup from happening there. If the timing was right, course.
Half the planet, arguably the loudest portion is/was already against it and i am 100% sure sponsors would rain down on those who boyccoted (?) the event. So... the moral incentives are there, the financial ones too, the support is clearly there, why on earth isn't this happening? I can understand why Ronaldo or Messi wouldn't. They are fighting for legacy and this is their last shot. Selfish if you will, but i get it. But some of the younger generations? People that are already set for life financially. Or someone like Tony Kroos. I know he decided not to play for personal reasons, but as we've all heard from the wisest man in the 7 kingdoms

"Have you ever considered learning how to lie every now and then, just a bit",

Just tell them you're not playing for hr issues. Stir the ******* pot ffs. Get the ball rolling, see if others jump in. Get someone from countries that didnt qualify to stand by you. Get Ramos, Pique, Kroos, Arturo Vidal, someone from Italy, and take it from there. Make a fuzz. Get the right people (in terms of the messega you wanna deliver, dont misquote me here) from the lgbt community to stand by you. Get people from other sports. Throw a punch, a big one at FIFA. Make them pay for their decision. Show them this wont be costless.

Or Denmark, with their protest all black jersey. Jesus christ. You wanna protest? Then dont show up. The level of hypocrisy we are witnessing is mesmerizing. A journo asking maluma 'why are you here despite the hr violations' while the journo himself is there, getting paid to be there... you cant make that stuff up.

And the beer thing. This one is very, very, very hard to explain. This aint new and it has precedents. Brazil's wc, UCL in mosw, etc. They adjusted things so that this could happen.
They waited till the last minute, when fifa couldnt back down, when they had them by the balls they just squeezed. Hard. This will have consequences for decades. Why? Glad you asked. Cuz one of FIFA's selling points in terms of sponsorships was that they could deliver on their word. They could get **** done. They were in charge. Well, now we see that is not the case. That basically poses a risk to all and any sponsor from here onwards. How much is that worth? Impossible to tell. The beer company will sue (or negotiate) with FIFA and FIFA will transfer the bill to the organizers. That's probably a non issue. That's the easy part. The reputational cost is impossible to estimate. What is the downside in terms of sponsorship revenue FIFA will take a hit for in 2026, 2030 and 2034? Who the **** knows!
I can tell you this tho, it is far from zero and ever potential sponsor, every single one of them will use this as an argument to lower their bid.

Some voices dont really help tho. The french guy saying 'this is the way they do here so we need to respect them' needs to be ridiculed. 24/7. The point of human rights, the ENTIRE BLOODY point was to have a bar that could be used everywhere. If the place doesnt meet those standards, it's not the players/fans that need to adapt to the place. We need to find another place. And if infantino talks about how euros arent in a position to give lessons on morality, then get him in front of a south american journo, an african one, an asian one.
Corner him, put him in an unconfortable spot, make him sweat. And just as the organizers did with fifa, when you got him there, live, in the spotlight, in front of millions... for the love of god, squeeze.

Interesting reading England's past performances in the WC.

I recall 1998. But just confirms what an arsehole Hoddle was back then and his lack of man management skills.

Rooney in the ST today recounting his WC experiences and what went wrong in WCs 2006-2014.

Good luck to England in this. Play as a team and get as far as they can - all they can be asked to do. First game tomorrow will tell us a lot.

Nothing they can do about the political backdrop to this tournament.

As an arg supporter (mind, not club, country), that was by quite some margin the most exciting game i've ever watched. It had everything, absolutely everything. Not the best, not the most important but again, the most exciting one. Two teams throwing everything but the sink at each other.

I still quote the game as a counter argument when english supporters tease me about the hand of god thingie. I've yet to meet an argentine who blames owen for diving and getting the penalty. That's on the ref. If i recall uk's headline after the game was something along the lines of '10 lions and one stupid kid'.

That's the thing I love about the WC those high drama matches. Best reality tv.

Unlikely an England v Argentina match unless it's in the final. Right now just looking for England to get through group stage, ideally top. Past that who knows? Looking too far ahead is never a good thing. 🤔

But having said that an Argentina v Brazil semi (if the draw pans out) would be mouth watering.

And so the most controversial World Cup of our lifetime is about to begin. Surprised they didn't show the opening ceremony, well not here in England, BBC or ITV.

First goal Ecuador - 3 mins.

And ruled out for offside? WTF?

Our rules expert explained it. He didn't realize provide anything insightful other than restating offside rule. Looked like there were three defenders even with the guy.
