[2015 RWC] Pool A: England vs. Wales (26/09/2015)

My sources also say the English team will be announced on Thursday, and I will then add it to the OP on friday. (Thursday is a public holiday in South Africa, so I won't be at work and therefore offline).

When do Wales announce their team, anybody.

Wow, a midfield of Farrell, Burgess and Barritt against Warrenball. I was looking forward to this match...

it will still be a great watch, but probably with very few trys, like the wales -ireland game from the six nations.

Well, the silver-lining is that if we lose there's absolutely nowhere for Lancaster to hide. This is his selection to a T; if it blows up in his face he's gone. I'll take it as a sign of confidence rather than ignorance. (Otherwise I'll burst a blood vessel.)

Guys lets not actually jump up and down on Lancaster until he announces the squad this is just speculation & rumour currently.

Jesus Christ.

If that selection is true, it is basically insane on every conceivable level.

1) We have two 13s in the squad. One, the focal point of our attack, is injured. The other is not going to be selected even in the 23, instead we are taking our worst attacking 12, in fact our worst attacking player by a country mile, and moving him to 13 because of his "experience"
2) BARRITT IS NOT EVEN ANY MORE EXPERIENCED THAN SLADE AT 13! They have both player there internationally once, and Slade has played much more there domestically.
3) Plus, Slade is good and Barrit is bad, we can all see that!
4) Let's say, for the sake of argument, we accept the need to play Burgess-Barritt in the centres. Let's pretend Slade and Jack Nowell are also injured, so Burgess has to make his first international start - why the hell would you drop the flyhalf with whom he has played probably 95% of his rugby at inside centre?! Who has generally been very good for England with a couple of exceptions and did very little wrong last week.
5) Now let's pretend that Ford is also injured and these three are literally the only backs left in those three positions. You have the slowest, least creative midfield you can possibly imagine ... so, what would you do with your pack? Go with essentially the same one that played against Fiji, the "mobile" one (if you're being kind) / "lightweight" one (if you're not)? Or change 2 or 3 players to shore it up and suit the slow, inexpansive game plan implied by the cackline selection? This is essentially the decision Lancaster has forced upon himself when he had absolutely no need to - make several, disruptive changes to the pack, or combine a slow, trundle-it-up back line with a lightweight pack.
6) There are probably many more things about this that are utterly mental; I just can't think of them right now. I'm too angry to think straight.

Wales are suffering injuries right left and centre and it's killing them, unfortunate for them. We've had one injury, and Lancaster has gone into meltdown. Honestly, it's like watching a Merit Table team work the 9 forwards and 6 backs who did turn up into a serviceable 15 to make up for the four best players who were last seen in the Walkabout at 4am and now aren't answering their phones. Has he tried asking if any of the squad have a mate who played at school who they can ring?!

Too late for me!

A good point well made though, sir. Perhaps some perspective (and maybe some valium) would help.

Also, let's all take some time to remember that our Prime Minister was accused of interfering with a dead pig this week! How can any Englishman be unhappy with that comedy goldmine in the world!

My confidence in Lancaster ended a long time ago. I think we need a new set of coaches in, and I'm not even sure if Rowntree should survive this time.

Baxter-King dream partnership.

Also don't get me wrong if Lancaster does announce that as the team I'm all up for extreme levels of hysteria.

apparently its all porky-pies

I didn't know it was being reported in the BBC. If it's in the BBC, it's happening.

I was like that before it was cool!

TBH Rowntree should prob look elsewhere as well he could prob get a DOR or head coach role at a good club as well.

England should have

Jones, Baxter and King ;) to replace them.

but seriously

Baxter/Ryan, King and someone else maybe outside of England might work well.

(I feel we need a coach who has not been a part of the RFU/PRL setup at all, who can bring in something different to the thinkings. (Like Eddie Jones did for SA and Japan) someone who can look at things from a different angle and speak there mind esp in the backs).

Well if that's a sign of your general judgement rather than a quite pointless ad hominem (one deserves another) fair enough. You're miles out. Mid 40's I'm afraid.

Now do you have a point to make? Noon and Tindall in my view represent the nadir of post 2003 centre combinations. Both fine men and fine players at times but indicative of what was I believe all that was problematic under Andy Robinson. A desire for defensive solidity over creativity. I can see no reason at all that comparisons cannot be drawn between say Brad Barritt and say Mr Noon. Both wholehearted defenders who are limited in attack.

Or is it the term of reference that so offends? We could talk about the relative merits of say Stuart Barnes vs Rob Andrew or even Spencer vs Mehrtens for the all blacks if that would make you more comfortable?

Now did you have a point to make? Or do you just want to call names? If its the latter I'm quite happy to ignore you thanks.

Fair point and apologies, i thought you were (actually not too sure what i thought your post entailed) harping back to the era of people just booting the ball back and forth all day and saying that because your dad said those were the days rugby was rugby. Misinterpretation. Need to not post on online forums at 2am, nothing good comes from it.

The point above re., Andy Robinson, BB /= Noon, in a perfect world bringing in Slade or keeping Ford on would make sense and if i were in SL position i would probably worry about their slight of build going up against Warrenball. We know Ford gets targeted and with Slade at 12 an-a-half stone simple physics says as with Eastmond, that if a Roberts runs at him he'll go backwards and give Wales go-forward. Barritt v Roberts =, Burgess v Roberts . >=, with Williams the reverse is probably true.

For Wales it might actually work, also JJ might still start so.. just going to have to trust in the coaches judgement around certain games. ^_^

If things don´t go well for against the Welsh and Aussies, and we get Baxter, I really hope we get Hunter too, as he has made a real difference for the Chiefs, and importantly knows all the players from u20 level. For the same reasons, I wouldn´t mind if we got Walshe instead of King.

Haha, Tindall-Noon, Hape-Tindall, Hape-Banahan, or Burgess-Barritt, which is the best?

Wow, very surprised at all the news this morning - from a Welsh perspective I'd love this to be true. But it just seems to have completely come out of nowhere! England v Fiji was a bit of a dull game but then so were the Ireland and Wales games so I'm really not sure why Ford would be swapped out. As a principle I never take the word of the press as gospel until the official announcement, but it seems there must be something to it if the BBC are so damn sure.

From what I've seen of Burgess it seems he is more than capable of making the grade...eventually. But going up against Roberts and Williams will not be easy. Never particularly rated Brad Barritt...solid but unspectacular IMO. I like Farrell though and I guess the logic would be that Lancaster wants every penalty to be slotted through the posts. There's no question too that Farrell is a very solid defender and sheer physicality would be another reason why Lancaster could want him lining up with Burgess and Barritt I guess. But Ford just has a spark Farrell doesn't have. We'll find out tomorrow for sure I guess!

Has Joseph 100% definitely been ruled out then?

You have the offloading abiliity of Banahan, Hape and Burgess, the hard running of Noon, Burgess and Tindall, the brilliant defence of Tindall and Barritt, and the footballing ability of...
