[2015 RWC] Pool A: England vs. Australia (03/10/2015)

Handball is a ****ing joke of a sport.

It's the sort of thing that would be made up in a Rob Schneider movie about Europe.

It is more international than cricket for sure :D

France 5 times world champion if I'm not wrong :p

If the wallabies results in recent times doesnt scream out 'top 3' i duno what will! (and thats even including the 2 bad years) the only other only side who possibly could is ireland, but to me they have not yet shown enough outside of their 'home' to change my opinion to them, they are the best in the nh by quite abit and perhaps after this world cup and/or a successful tour in the SH will change my mind.
Not really bothered with the world rankings, but that's a good point. The Irish do have the measure of everyone, but haven't proved it in the grown up world.

My two most respected teams are both Aus - Mark Ella's lot in 84 and Eales' in 99. Also Umaga's army of the undead, and maybe Johnson's orcs of 2003.

Suppose you have to have one.

What happened to that Gary Cornish bloke who was Scotlands answer to Mike Tyson?

Is that like the US winning the baseball world series?

I do not think so, several teams are very good. It is an European centered sport but still you have latin america with Brazil, Argentina, Chile, you have north Africa with Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria or some middle east team like quatar and saudi arabia.

I think South Korea has an average team as well.

Germany is the big championship in Handball, very well paid players and clubs that are the best in Europe. Spain also has a good championship.

Is Handball just for people who are too short to play basketball and too crap to play football?

Cricket is the biggest sport in the world going by fans. The Indian subcontinent can't get enough of it. Who plays Handball, Jim his 'mate' Theo and Ralf down the road? Maybe a stray dog on the touchline.

Just a quick question, but what happens if Australia lose to England (by more than 7 points) but beat Wales by less than 7 points? Wouldn't that mean Wales still go through anyway since they'd pick up the losing bonus point?

Clumsy dwarf sport !

It stays quite limited geographically if I may say, this was what I meant with "internationaly".

The commonwealth is not the world :D

Are you serious? During the cricket World Cup literally there were matches watched by literally a billion people... I don't think you can say that for handball.

Heck I hadn't even heard of it until someone brought it up as a joke a couple years back. Who even plays it? It seems like the type of sport that would compete with hockey for air time (and for the record, Australia have a few hockey World Cup ***les ;-) ).

You have to remember that in the rest of Europe (and big parts of the world), Cricket is non existent, not even born.

I'm sure China has a sport that nobody else play and there is biggest numbers of watchers in the world if I can do a parallel...Does not mean that this is an international sport. Anyway this is not the subject of the topic :D

This English arrogance things really bugs me.

Just because we are daft enough each time our team enters a competition at any sport we believe and hope they can win it does not make us arrogant.

We've won a RWC, a football work cup, finished high on the medals tables in the last two Olympics, and currently hold the ashes. I think we have the right to be proud of our nations sporting achievement.

NZ won RWC twice.....

You realise New Zealand has won World Cups in multiple other sports right?

Yeah, I can imagine, but outside of Europe a handful of European countries I doubt handball has any genuine presence.

Also in terms of the number of countries that play it, in the subcontinent it's pretty well everywhere and contrary to popular belief there's a lot more than just India in that region.

I'd contend that a sport being big in the subcontinent, Southern Hemisphere and the United Kingdom makes the game more "international" than a game only the Germans genuinely care about. As I said, I'd rate Hockey as a bigger game than Handball, and Hockey isn't anywhere close to Cricket's league.

On your shoulder with that chip you dull pratt

First ones always the hardest....no wait they are all a pain

Ironic, you're actually the "dull" one here, playing up to the stereotypical arrogant, aggressive Pom that people dislike.

I saw a lot of bragging in here at how good you guys were at everything and merely pointed out, you're not that good. Take it on the chin like a big boy Tallshort, instead of tossing out petty cliche insults. A lot of you seem to try over compensate when you lose at something and it's generally trash talking and pointing out how great you are.

really is the moment of truth for Wallabies and england. I like the attitude coming from the Wallabies camp. Definitely about doing all their talking" on the field and how they are serious about their self belief and identity. I just hope the result does not come down to a confidential tmo or other referee decision. Wallabies are up against the home crowd and the pressure this puts I the ref but I think they will handle it and put england out on their arse
