Warwick leaving Munster for London Irish

sounds like Irish jumped the gun here, Warwick probably gave a verbal commitment but Munster must have talked him down this evening.

Limerick Post are saying that Munster have confirmed to them that Warwick is staying at Munster for another 2 years.

It's getting ridiculous. Both Munster and london Irish are claiming that Warwick will be playing for their team next year.

Munster star commits his future to London Irish
Paul Warwick, the Munster star player, will join the club at the start of next season on a three year contract.
London Irish announced today (27th January) that Paul Warwick will join the club at the start of next season. The Munster star player has signed a two year contract that will keep him with the Exiles until the end of the 2010-11 season.

28-year-old Warwick can play at fly half or full back as anyone who watched Munster’s recent Heineken Cup victory over Sale Sharks at Thomond Park will have seen. He has been an integral part of the successful provincial team for the past two and a half seasons during which time he has made 33 appearances and scored 211 points.

Announcing the signing London Irish Head Coach, Toby Booth said, “Quality not quantity has been the philosophy underlying our recruitment policy so when the opportunity came to sign a top class player like Paul Warwick we jumped at the chance. Paul is a match-winning player whose performances at fly half and full back speak for themselves. He is a welcome addition as we continue to build a world class squad at London Irish.â€

Warwick captained the Australian team at all eight IRB Sevens Series tournaments in the 2003-04 series, and finished the season as the third highest try scorer across all teams. He joined Connacht from the Manly club in 2004 on a one year contract. A 97 point return in the Challenge Cup campaign in his first season led to a two year extension at the end of which he joined Munster.

Munster have issued a hands-off warning to Guinness Premiership club London Irish, who have claimed to have signed Paul Warwick on a three-year deal starting in the summer.

“He is a Munster player. He remains a Munster player for the next two seasons. It is that simple,†said Munster’s communications manager Pat Geraghty.

This is likely to create bad blood between the European Champions and the closest thing to an Irish club abroad as Warwick has been one of the province’s best players this season moving seamlessly between full-back and out-half as cover for Ronan O’Gara.

The former Australian Sevens exponent has added to his game since moving to Connacht four years ago and on to Munster at the beginning of the 2007-2008 season.[/b]

Was it Tony Buckley who similarly "flip-flopped" on signing for Quins a couple of years ago?

I thought it was Bath he was linked with?

Could have been Bath. I'm probably confusing Buckley with Mike Ross of Quins.

Paul Warwick born 1 August 1981 in Australia is a rugby union player for Munster who play their rugby in the Magners League and Heineken cup. He plays as a fly-half. On January 27, 2009, he signed a three year deal with English side, London Irish, starting at the start of the 2009-2010 season but decided to stay with the European Champions because Paulie put the frighteners on him and the Not-Not's didn't tell him they were actually going to be playing in Reading! Reading, ffs, that's worse than Wales![/b]

lulz.

I'd love to know why Munster haven't released a statement about this, becoming quite farcical at this stage, yet again Irish are reiterating that he has signed a contract and that he did so a few weeks ago. So if he's actually signed a contract than Munster will have to buy him out of the deal in order to keep him.

There is going to be a load of boring press reports claiming that both clubs have signed him. This could go on for another few days until we hear from Paul himself.

I am guessing we haven't Issued a statement because he has signed for Irish and Munster and Warwick are trying to find a way out of it. Whatever Geraghty says can be retracted and apologised for, An official statement can't.

Funny :)

This whole thing is creating a bit of bad blood between the two sides. London Irish are now known as "Reading South Africans" on MF.com

I've been calling them that for years. Their other names are "The United Nations of Reading" and the "Not-Nots" (as in Not Irish and Not London).

Is Warwick a place kicker? Right now London Irish have Hewat to take kicks and he is not normally that consistant.
I think that it will mean that Geraghty will be playing more at 12 which is where I think that he plays best. Fingers crossed!

yeah he's a decent placekicker, has been top scorer in the challenge cup when he was at Connacht.

Have you watched any Munster games this season PGSG? He is a reliable Place-kicker, is fast, has a good eye for a break, excellent passer and wonderful tactical kicker who can score long range drop goals instinctively. Not afraid of contact either and is aggressive in defence. He better be staying!
