Warm Up Match 6: Waikato Chiefs v British & Irish Lions (Hamilton)

Well I wasn't far wrong, surprised by AWJ, but then Krutoje did play on Saturday...The big surprise is Joseph, I would have thought Daly would cover the bench.

As for subs, if I do my maths correctly there are currently 45 players, so only one of these guys can make Saturday if the other 22 are in Saturday's squad. Therefore surely it's AWJ. This is of course barring injuries and other stuff.

If it's out of them 3 for the bench I would take Daly, covers more positions and can kick if things go really wrong.
Lol - you can never have enough decent kickers in a lions XV ....
Should of started Russell and Davis, give them both an hour IMO....
if Russell just played a test satdee, and flew over to NZ, then probably unfair to him. He had a good outing against the Oz, from what I saw. Big impact.... Then there is Biggar.... Hmmmm.

Hard to tell much from this game I think, Chiefs will be a shadow of their normal selves and Gatland is likely to rest his test players. Maybe all we will learn is the likely Lions team for next weekend.

Err, Joseph? Do you think he might be in the 23 shirt on Sat?

Honestly no.

I think if he was earmarked for the 23 shirt he would be playing IMO.

Could be wrong but I don't see Gatland having no one on the bench who can cover back three.

Didn't he have Jamie Roberts in the 23 shirt for Wales quite a bit recently?
That said I do agree that JJ is very unlikely to make the 23. Wouldn't be surprised if he's given Williams the start at 15 to see whether he should overtake Daly.

I suspect that is the case.

When Roberts played 23, Davies was in 22 shirt and whilst it isn't his first choice position he can cover 15.

Remember though there are a lot of nutters out there who thought Roberts could play full-back.... maybe Gatland was one of them.

Read the forwards, saw Tipuric, then the backs from 15 to 11 and thought 'thats exciting'......then saw Biggar and Laidlaw and remembered Gatland and Howley are in charge......enough said.

Deleted - misread your reference.... If not the irony.... ;)

Laidlaw, passing to Biggar, is akin to watching the ***anic launch. Frankly, Laidlaws distribution has been awful. Don't mind admitting we are pretty weak at scrum half. Really hope murray stays fit for the test series. Webs ok, but that's it.

If the test back 3 is Watson, Halfpenny, North then 2 of them can play full back. JJ can play on wing. I don't think it would be a surprise of JJ takes 23 over Daly and Williams. Farrell on bench to covers 10/12. I think it actually might happen.

Can JJ play wing? When was the last time he played on the Wing?

Would be amazed if Gatland would trust him to cover a area he hasn't played at all this tour.

He hasn't exactly shined this series so far.

I know JJ has turned up on the wing a couple of times in the past for England. Probably a while ago now mind, I'm not saying its ideal and Daly clearly covers more positions.

Just think it's odd he's not playing on Tuesday, and while missing two tackles last week he made good gains, scored a try and his lines led to the other. I'd love to see Daly too but I don't think Gats has given him a proper chance yet.

The only thing that the lions wingers need to be able to do is defend from Gatlands point of view.

The likes of Williams, Daly, Watson, Seymour and North could not have been more irrelevant to the way things have happened so far. I reckon Nowell would have been a favourite of Gatlands before the tour but played himself out of the running in week 1. I

How is Haskell #823 when he was called up last?

Roberts started his career as a wing/full back it was Gatland who converted him to centre. Bearing in mind though,he was probably about two stone lighter and could actually run at that point.

They went in alphabetical order... Henderson is 824
Fair enough, it's just I thought the numbers would be allocated at the time of the original squad announcement, of which Haskell obviously wasn't a part. I'm guessing anyone called u any later than Haskell would have a bunch of numbers at the end?
