Wales vs BaaBaas

Oh yikes. I just kinda assumed. Erm, Paul James or Yapp on the tight (possibly Andrews, but I don't think he's ready yet), and Bevington on the loose then (James if one of Yapp or Andrews is on the tight). Adam Jones is in great form, so I don't see any harm here finding out who'll be his understudy at the WC considering Mitchell will possibly miss out.

I have a sense that they might see if they can pick a 23 man squad. Or have 3 front rowers on the bench.

It will likely be Yapp at loosehead and James on the tight.

Yeh, would make sense. I'd prefer Bevington personally, I think he's a better player with a bigger future. But Gatland does seem to have a soft spot for Yapp. Not too fussed anymore, as Yapp was half decent in the 6 Nations.

WARBURTON TO CAPTAIN WALES AGAINST BAA-BAAS

Wales have named five uncapped players in the squad set to meet the Barbarians at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday 4th June, in celebration of 130 years of the Welsh Rugby Union, and nominated Blues back row forward Sam Warburton to captain the side.

Warburton will lead a side selected from the 26-man squad in the absence of Scarlets hooker Matthew Rees, who is rested. The uncapped players in the squad are Dragons pair Lloyd Burns (hooker) and Toby Faletau (flanker), Scarlets duo Lou Reed (second row) and Scott Williams (centre) and Ospreys prop Ryan Bevington.

Gavin Henson (Toulon) also returns and could win his 32nd cap after a two year lay-off alongside Dragons wing Aled Brew, who himself last featured for Wales against Fiji in November 2010.

The Baa-Baas side will feature the likes of Italian talisman Sergio Parisse, South African Rugby World Cup winners Francois Steyn and Ruan Pienaar and 98-times capped Welshman Martyn Williams.

Scarlets fly-half Stephen Jones is set to join Gareth Thomas as the most capped player in Welsh rugby history by making his 100th appearance against the Baa-baas.

“We have selected some exciting youngsters who have been chosen on form in the knowledge that there are a few players who are being rested or are injured for this game, but it means they have a chance to impress,†said national coach Warren Gatland.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to look at some players that have been hitting their form over the last few weeks.

“These are really exciting times for us as a squad, the Rugby World Cup is on the horizon and we begin our preparations with this first up match against the Barbarians before two intensive training camps in Poland and then our final three matches in August.

“Sam Warburton takes over the captaincy mantle from Matthew Rees, who is rested. Sam is one of the leaders in the squad and will benefit from the experience of captaining the side after having such an impressive Six Nations campaign.â€

I like Yapp's name. That's his only reason for inclusion. I'd go with-

1. Ryan Bevington
2. Richard Hibbard
3. Paul James
4. Alun Wyn Jones
5. Luke Charteris
6. Dan Lydiate
7. Sam Warburton (Capt)
8. BIG TOBE

9. Tavis Knoyle
10. Stephen Jones
11. Shane
12. Gavin Henson
13. Jonathan Davies
14. Aled Brew
15. Morgan Stoddart

16. Lloyd Burns
17. Scott Andrews
18. Lou Reed
19. Josh Turnbull
20. Ryan Jones (Shane can cover Scrum-Half. NOT HAVING PHILLIPS IN THE TEAM.)
21. Rhys Priestland
22. George North

Is there anything to say that, since this is a friendly and not even a 'proper' test match (The Baa Baa's aren't awarding caps, so it therefor does not have test status. Correct me if I'm wrong) they will be allowed a 24-man squad? It wouldn't make sense having two hookers on the bench, but there we are.

Oh, and I think Lloyd Burns is quite a good call. I never would have included him myself, but I can certainly see why Gatland has and do agree. He hadn't entered my head up until I first saw the squad.

Last time I checked the squad there were 26 names released.

Dunc, this is a test match ... Wales are awarding caps ... where have you been? Also Gatland will include Phillips so suck it up. If he only wanted one scrum half he would have only called up one for the squad. Yapp will also get the start, he deserves the start anyway he did a good job in the 6 Nations, which is often overlooked. Bevington has the potential but is not a regular starter at loose head for the Ospreys, he is 3rd choice let us not forget this.

01 James
02 Hibbard
03 Yapp
04 AW Jones
05 Charteris
06 Lydiate
07 Warburton
08 Faletau

09 Knoyle
10 S Jones
11 SM Williams/North
12 Henson
13 Davies
14 Brew
15 Stoddart

16 Burns
17 Bevington
18 R Jones
19 Turnbull
20 Phillips
21 Priestland
22 North/S Williams

Glad Lloyd Burns has been selected, just hope its ahead of Huw.

I was under the impression that a test match only had the test status if both sides awarded caps. Not only did I make this clear in my post, I also said "Correct me if I'm wrong." (Which you started to do, I guess). I'm sorry that my knowledge isn't quite up to scratch. (Is it Cricket in which this is the system? It is in some sport, anyway.)

I'm not overlooking Yapp as such, I'd just like to see Bevington given a chance as I'm a big fan of dynamic, ball-carrying props, and Ryan Bevington is arguably the closest we've got to Gethin Jenkins when he's injured, and Scott Andrews has been in the squad three times already, but is still uncapped, which is cruel to him, even if he isn't doing too much to earn the plaudits, other than be 'Promising'.

Didn't the Blues say that Yapp was an 'out and out tighthead' at the start of the season, before he went on to play loosehead all year? Perhaps he could be more prime for a switch than James, but I feel that somebody a little closer to the First XV would benefit the newer props.

If John Hayes is playing don't bother playing scrummaging props.
Yapp is not the best prop, but much of his criticism is undeserved, he did a pretty decent job in the Six Nations.

Full test caps are awarded, a bad move by the WRU in my opinion.
At least Faletau can get a full cap finally!

Got to agree with that.

I can't believe Henson is going to be playing, the welsh should of banned him years ago after corrupting the voice of an Angel...

And not just because of Tait and a penalty among a few other things?
I say ban him so the opposition don't have to deal with such a person!
;)

I don't really class him a threat at the moment, he cares too much about his image and money, more than winning things with Wales!

I'm going to give him a chance to play before I throw him out.
Public image aside, one cannot deny the skill that he has shown, and that he still does have the potential for success.
Then again, I can see why you wouldn't want him when you have this available...
Shontayne-Hape-007.jpg

Hape had a good season for Bath and England, but I am more excited about the talent coming through the youth ranks of the England Setup... but anyways I was just giving my opinion, Henson wouldn't be my first choice if I was Warren Gatland, and I am surprised by it...
Of course you would give Henson a chance as there is talk of him coming back and being rehabilitated at Newport...

I don't think he would automatically be first choice, but Roberts is injured and this is only a Barbarians match, not World Cup or Six Nations.

My knowledge on England's U20's and U18's is very limited, but I have heard Guy Armitage is a pretty good prospect, while Manu looks like he has a bright future.

I seriously doubt Henson coming to the Dragons, I don't think we have the money to sign him, and Ashley Smith has done a good job with us.

You forget England also have the guy who kept Henson out of the Sarries 12 shirt available :p

Henson guaranteed the 12 shirt for the match

I like Warburton as captain as well - I don't know how he is rallying the troops etc. but you can't fault his game and he'll definitely lead from the front

Warburton captained the U20 side so is a good option as you said.

Could have said South Africa a year back :p
Henson is no Brad Barritt, that's for sure.

Good choice with Warburton as captain, he would have been my pick, although I thought Gatland would have gone with AWJ.
