(Very) early thoughts on the 2017 Lions

Interesting that everyone has Sexton given the question did state 'current form'.

Thirded, but I'd love to see what Murray and Ford could do given a decent amount of time to gel as a unit

+1

Would also like to see what Murray and Russell could do given a decent amount of time to gel.

It's going to be Warburton or AWJ as captain. A forward and a Welsh player.Hartley's blown his chances IMO after his thuggish attack on SOB, as he is the only other player I think Gatland would consider as captain. Warburton would make a good tour captain; just don't think on current form he is the best 7.

I can't see Sexton's body holding up either, which is why I hope Ford goes as a third fly half and Gatland doesn't go for Biggar.

From the games I've see him play this year, not totally on top form for Wales. Still he is class when he is and has credit in the bank after captaining the last winning Lions test.

AWJ will be captain if fit, Warburton is not as good as Tips who regardless of what others have been saying on here is the best 7 in the NH and with a back row colleagues to compliment him will given the chance show this.

Maro Itoje and Henry Slade are neck-and-neck for the best 7 in the NH.

I'd like to just highlight that despite things I've heard to the contrary Keith Earls still doesn't seem able to tackle big guys. His first attempted tackle on Tuilagi was horrendous.

He's not. If a 7 was only judged on their handling/running ability then yes, probably. Except that isn't their most important role. The breakdown is key and he is not great there. Otherwise why not just play another centre at 7?? probably because they need other skills, which tips doesn't have. He's a great bench player though to come off to play against a tiring team.

******** is what your talking

Tips might well be the best 7 in the NH outside of Dublin, I don't think so because he drifts in and out of games too much for me, give me Hardie and a fit Warburton. The top two are a pair in Leinster wearing scrum caps, their injured colleague probably rounds out the top 5 for me as I refuse to acknowledge that an Englishman has played openside in the last ten years. On top form I'd have Warburton ahead of VdF but I think VdF will surpass the man before he finds that form.

Sexton has been in good form lately? They're just giving him some time off right now so that he'll be right for the 6N.

I'd like to add that he'd be my 1st choice at fh for the Lions too, injury permitting.

call me crazy but if kicking is covered by halfpenny then id go with ford or russel at 10 at the moment. sexton is a great player but i feel ford or russel are way more creative in attack (at the moment at least).
