U.S.A. vs. Canada. RWCQ 1st leg, 17/08/13

I love Barkwill's "chopping wood" tackles!!!

Dolan and Fenoglio on for states as is Shaw. Eagles ringing the changes, Wooldridge on for us, only White left on the bench I beleive for us.

27-9 I'll take that for sure. Solid lead heading into next week the 15+ point win on the road gives us a rankings gain boost as well and I think we might move back into 14th.

Edit: Does anyone know what the heck the tiebreaker is? Do they go straight into extra time? Is is total tries? Away points?

Summary

Canada 27-9(13-0) United States.

Canada

Tries: Mack, Jones, Van De Merwe
Conversions: Pritchard 3(3)
Penalties: Pritchard 2(2)

United States

Penalties: Wyles 3(5)

Nice result, not the best of games, however.

Some notes:
- Buydens is probably more valuable than I thought. While Tiedemann wasn't necessarily a liability, Buydens would have shredded the U.S. tighthead.
- Pritchard, of course, is as reliable as any kicker in rugby.
- Mack was sensational. He's without a doubt the #1 scrumhalf for us now.
- Quiet game by Ardron. Hopefully he bounces back next game.
- We should have kept Cudmore on longer- when he came off I could notice a drop in intensity.
- Moonlight played really well, he is deserving of a pro contract in my book.
- When DTH touches the ball he makes things happen, and as a result, needs to go back to 13. He made a lot happen today when he had the ball, but sadly that wasn't very often. I'd pair him with Blevins next week.
- When will the Americans get a goalkicker?

Great post CDN, very agreed on DTH, not that Hearn was brutal or anything but DTH is a playmaker, time to start Mackenzie on the wing and put DTH with Blevins in the CT's. Wonder if Crowley is taking the pro's off a little early to not bother the top flight clubs, Cudmore could and should have done at least another 10-15 minutes.

It's an awkward deficit for the States, it's very difficult but not impossible to make up. A smaller lead for Canada and I think the Eagles would still be chomping at the bit, likewise another try for Canada and Tolkin may have been able to use next week as a more experimental match up.

Hopefully that's not the case. Hopefully it was just a matter of Mackenzie coming back from injury and saving Cudmore (who isn't exactly young anymore) for next week. In any case, based on what I saw tonight, I'd go with this squad next week:

1) Tiedemann
2) Barkwill
3) Marshall
4) Sinclair (not crazy about this, but Crowley seems to like it so it will probably happen again)
5) Cudmore
6) Ardron
7) Moonlight
8) Carpenter (c)

9) Mack
10) Jones
11) Mackenzie
12) Blevins
13) DTH
14) Evans
15) Pritchard

16) Hamilton
17) Dolezel
18) Wooldridge
19) Hotson
20) Dala
21) White
22) Hearn
23) Hirayama (don't get the Hirayama bashing, one bad pass against Tonga doesn't make him useless)

No idea what kind of squad the U.S. will select, but I think they need a new coach. If they lose by a similar scoreline or worse next week I think Tolkin will be canned.

Great test result, with the mediocre entertainment value counterbalanced by the fact that I watched it with an Eagles fan. And some nice Canadian tries :)

As an aside, I am a relative rugby noob, so today was the first time I truly realized how spoiled we are to have Pritchard to handling the kicking duties.

This is probably the lineup I'd go with as well, depending on whether Underwood is healthy maybe stick him on the bench but it's not a big deal either way.

I think your right on Tolkin in fact I think he's probably done either way, the Eagles just can't create in attack, a new guy would have a couple of months before getting a good chance to try out new combo's in November vs. Moari, Russia and Georgia. If the States make a move it should be now, with two years to go before the RWC a new coach probably has just enough time to get settled in and get his game plan working.

They should be doing better than they are. What are they? 0-6 on the year with only 4 tries? They have a few decent forwards, but have nothing in the backs. They seem to have a condition similar to the "suggititis" that we suffered through for a few years.

Tolkintis perhaps LOL?

Found out the tie breaker, the first tie breaker is total tries so Canada are up 3-0 in that category at the moment should they lose by 18.

Awful performance by the US backs, particularly the halfbacks. Forwards weren't bad other than LaValla being too slow for openside and the forwards generally losing too much ball in the tackle.

Here is the lineup I would go with for next week, assuming Hume is still injured:

1 Fry
2 Biller
3 Pittman
4 Manoa
5 Stanfill
6 LaValla
7 Clever
8 Dolan
9 Shaw
10 Niua
11 Scully
12 L'Estrange
13 A Suniula
14 Ngwenya
15 Wyles

Same rules as the World Cup, seeing as it's officially the same tournament. Extra time (Two 10 minute halves), then golden score/sudden death for 20 minutes, then penalties (With five elected kickers, rather than the entire XV).

Why were the USA so flat? it got beyond a joke by the end, they couldn't do anything with the tiny depth they had. Canada seemed to understand what they were doing, the USA, for all their Wyleses and Ngwenyas looked clueless.
