TRF Staff get hands on with Rugby World Cup 2011

thanks for the info what will happen if henson is in the 30 man squad but not on the game?

On that the editor is very good and allows you to change loads of attributes

Also, wed have coined a new catchphrase - From now on an "ash Splash" performed by Sean O'Brien will hensforth be known as a "Mite Flight", being as seemingly every time I got the ball controlling him I managed to score (complete with a big swallow dive!)!

Ah, realism. Very good.

Read all the last 10 pages since I got up today (been sick....again, winter sucks this year) and well done guys, some fairly good reporting there.

Couple of things, I don't use Twitter at all. I just click on links to Twitter stuff and there isn't a link up as yet. Can someone link it?

Also, what view did you guys play, a mix of end-on and side view or what? I'm a fan of side-view so was wondering how clear that looks as far as seeing the depth of your backline positions clearly.

Charlie, you said you could alter knock-ons and something else, but not ref strictness. Are those sliders, or just on/off (although offside line will definitely be just on/off of disappearing)?

well everything seems mostly positive :D :D Glad to read you guys been enjoying :D

Gotta say, Gutted that theres no Gav!!!! :( :( I wanted Tan in HD :(

AI does concede penalties in Open Play!

Also You may want to hear, I beat Olyy 36 - Nil

Worth noting that our teams ratings differed by 30+ points :p

It was good to see (though horribly frustrating) that team ratings really do effect things, and it's not by chance

For example, in 08 you'd do about 3 pick and drives and you'd get turned over - whereas GetofmeLand picked and drove for 50+ metres before getting a try
I also lost every single scrum (mine and his feed)

Some player likenesses are spot on (Andrew Sheridan, for example, is the spitting image - most are, to be fair) though some are just recognisable (When playing against Cymro (Wales) Shane Williams went off injured after 5mins to be replaced by George North who was so-so, could kinds recognise him, but without the name I'd have trouble placing him)

I echo what Cymro said about the stadiums, they look fantastic - the Aviva especially

We played side-on view as that's the one that we all play on normally
However when Cymro played the AI he played end on - with end on you've got the option of it being behind the attacking team all the time or behind your team all the time

Also, I just fired up 08 for a quick game with my 360 controller and the difference is ridiculous - you notice it more after playing RWC going back to 08, but the movements of the players around the pitch it's 10x better in RWC, just for starters

Great to hear, but didn't quite fully elaborate. Were you also partly saying that the depth and perception of where things are on the field on side-view was even better than before in '08? Basically is a subtlely adjusted, yet better angle?

To be honest, I didn't notice, so I'd say it's the same as previous
I had no problems with it though, and could see where gaps/half gaps were

Using the right analogue stick at a ruck/scrum/maul can give you a better look at the pitch though - it's used to choose which set piece to use, but you've got to hold it for a second or two to lock in which set piece to do - While it's locking in the view zooms out and gives you a look at more of the pitch/the offensive/defensive lines so you can judge which to do
A couple of times I just used this to look at what the defence was doing rather than actually do a set piece

Can you change the ruck tactic on the fly, once you have already chosen, example: you choose forward support, you plan on going up the middle, you see your wing out wide open, can you then choose to change to first player to ruck, to help contain the ball at the ruck out wide? Do you know what I mean? I think that would add tremendously strategy and skill to the game play and to ruck strategy, or is it simply not that deep? AJ if you see this question you can chime in. I am hoping the rucking system with the tactics makes it deeper then what most people realize.
Thanks again
Cheers and Salud
This is possible, however I'm not sure how effective it is as I simply didn't try it! I tended to leave it as standard, and then if the opposition was a good rucking team and I was losing ball (I found that SA were good at the breakdown, for example) I'd set it to "nearest player" in the hope of securing more of my own ball

Sounds awesome guys cheers for the reviews! I had gone off this game after the trailer but these reviews definitely have re-piqued my interest. Cheers to all the TRF guys.

I think we will all be surprised as to how much this will change the gameplay experience , once we have mastered it. AJ seemed very excited when talking about this feature. It seems like it would add so much to the gameplay, it would give it such a strategic approach . In 08 it was annoying how the player would sit around waiting for the proper player to go into the ruck(particularly when you when out a little wide), when there was a player close by needed to secure the ball. Watch out!!! You can quote me on this " The ruck strategy will be the best added feature of any rugby game to date". This game will take many days to master.
Cheers and Salud

One more thing to add before I hit the hay:

Quick tap penalties are actually quicktap! No more getting tackled as soon as you press the button :p
Running a penalty is a good option as well - I pressed the "take penalty" button (X) as soon as I pressed "Run" on the penalty options, and the person was mid-tap by the time the menu had gone

This + the chip kick were two things I remember specifying in the requests bit, so I'm very glad that they're both in and both work so well :D

I've loved all your reports today Olyy, you've addressed 95% of what I want to know about this game. Thanks very much!
