Transfers rumours

Johan Goosen, Cheetahs -> Racing Metro (Three year contract).

I really don't know why this kid is leaving. He is not far off first choice for SA.

Better pay, better team. Leaving SA won't impact a players ranking for the national side, so it's not detriment.

I'm not sure him leaving won't impact his chances playing test rugby. It's not as if he has delivered on his promise in a green jersey yet bar that one test against Aus. Not enough to at least see himself as a ;settled squad; member IMO if there is such a thing, at least not in the eyes of the public.

I have mixed feelings about this though. The Cheetahs are my 2nd team and RM is my adopted NH team so it kinda balances things though I think the Cheetahs need every good man they can get as they are in danger of being wooden spooners this year in SR. Goosen might benefit from playing in Europe though; he'll certainly have to improve in defence and at goal kicking for RM; that's what their game is based on ATM unles they brought him in specifically looking at upping the tempo but he won't be able to do it on his own, not if the other players don't follow suit and not if t's not in the team culture. Jantjies' miserable season with the Stormers last year is a perfect example of the fact that one player won't make a change to how a team plays.

It's also a big risk considering who the resident outhalf is...

True. You can see the logic from RM's side; it's a long tournament and depth in specialist positions is good specifically with two players playing somewhat similar games (though Goosen has more to work on). Got me thinking.. Goosen has impressed me at 15 thetwo games i've seen him play. Maybe they see him as a direct replacement for JMH or a bench option covering 10/15 to allow them to have a center/wing on the bench as well.

Or they just see him as long term understudy, Sexton being 7 years Goosen's senior- though what club plans so far ahead...

Yeah he seems the sort who'd be good there, but in terms of his SA ambitions it wouldn't be ideal.

Even if Goosen is a great player i'm still thinking that Wisniewski was the best guy to replace Sexton when he needs it. Moreover Wisniewski is an "historic" of the club, he was already there when we were in Pro D2. Now, only van der Merwe and Chavancy are still there.

Concerning Sam Davies, i dont think he will come because we have Sexton and Goosen, plus Dambielle, Hernandez, Estebanez and why not Lapeyre who can play at 10 (the last 2 may go out, Estebanez is linked whit Lyon).

Yeah, I have a lot of time for Wisniewski. I just think part of the reasoning behind the move for Goosen (I would've gone for Beauden Barrett -23 and 3rd choice for NZ- if I were Lorenzetti) is that Wisniewski and Sexton are the same age and the general practice is to stagger the age of players in any position so that you bring guys in as the others are on their way out so to speak.

Wish I'd seen more of Wisniewski. The times I saw him are very blurry and I just remember some flyhalf being a flyhalf. I wish I'd focused more on him, but I've read a lot about him here and there and many who have seen him consistently are very loyal fans and think he's a special talent. A bit like Burban at flanker in recent years, he's the flyhalf France never really got to cap too much because of all kinds of circumstances each time.

Just coming back to that I don't think anyone can call Goosen a 'great' player, not yet. He certainly has shown MEGA potential in the past and is still a very good player but he has not quite got back the form he showed 2 years ago but hopefully an injury-free run will se him get back as he has struggled wth a number of serious injuries and has probably only played 6 (seems like at least) games of rugby in two years and even those not on top of each other.

From the IRFU website:

- One non-Irish eligible (NIE) player only in each of the 15 field positions across the provinces of Leinster, Munster and Ulster e.g. one foreign player allowed across all three teams per position.

Anyone understand why there are 2 numbers 15s - Ludik/Kirchner
And 3 second rows? Douglas/Van Der Merwe/Roux

Yeah, they ever enforced it.

Roux may be a project player? That leaves 2 locks positions so that works perhaps one of Kirchner or Ludik is signed as Wings/Center/Fullback I get the impression these rules aren't that strict.

As a project player do u mean will be eligible for Ireland after 3 years?

The rule was never enforced. Eg. Botha and Afoa.
