The Ulster Thread

Ulster have signed all their non irish players for this season

Ack, shame that. Is the limit 4+1 project player these days? I can never remember. I see they've got Ludik, Pienaar, Williams, van der Merwe and Herbst, but I assume one of those is a project player?

Yeah, 4+1, Mixed Herbs is the project.

Tbh, even if there were a gap on the roster, I don't think Warburton would fit. Ulster already have one top class specialist 7; what they need is an upgrade on the options at 6 and 8, preferably a massive ball carrier i.e. Ferris. Any replacement back row has to fit the Fez hole in some shape and form. A top class 6/7 with a strong carrying game would be great, it would be nice to have some top class back-up to Henry, but I think Belfast ain't big enough for Henry and Warburton.

Jacob Stockdale named in Ulster team to play Exeter. Owens and O'Hagan on the bench, along with every forward in Ulster.

That's a quick enough progression. I presume in the back three. Played against him last year, looked a very good athlete and someone who could be an excellent finisher. I wouldn't have said he had that extra bit to set him apart but I suppose it's just a pre-season match and the players around him at Wallace are clearly nowhere near as good as at Ulster.

Also have to say I think O'Hagan is an excellent pick up.

Yup, on the wing. I don't know much about him but he scored a whole rake of tries for Ireland Schools this spring. Big lump judging from the pictures too. Be interesting to see how he goes, clearly he's impressed people.

I remember when O'Hagan was still at LI's academy there were people raving about him. Apparently Ulster wanted him then, but were told no due to Jackson/McKinney/Olding. Well, now that Olding's a 12, and McKinney's shat and we've got O'hagan... will be interesting to see if the three get released to the U20s, would be a big bump for them.

Henderson apparently out until the New Year with his hip. That's a big blow, especially in what needed to be a big year for him if he wanted to start at the WC.

On the plus side, he'll be nice and fresh for the second half of what promises to be a brutally attritional season, assuming all goes well with the operation. I mean, yeah, it hampers him nailing down a World Cup starting spot, but that isn't the end of the world for all concerned. It's possible Schmidt would prefer him on the bench as a 4/6 wrecking option for the end game anyway.

I heard a hip operation mentioned on commentary on Sat, but no details.

Just a wee date of note.

Today is the 2nd anniversary of the tragic accident that claimed Nevin Spence, his brother Graham and his dad Noel.

While two years has went past in a flash for me personally and probably for most on the forum; I'd guess it has been a much more arduous and drawn out journey for the family. My thoughts are with them.

Aye such a tragedy seems like much less than two years, thoughts also with the family.

that was a fecking shambles

the fitzpatrick card was unfortunate but i can understand it
the try being disallowed was just unfair blocking my arse

fuming with the performance and result
