The Ulster Thread

Poor second half showing by Ulster, but I am absolutely speechless at this referee. Ospreys getting completely demolished at the scrum but he gives no penalty even though the scrum is pushed back by about 5m..

Hennessy totally changed his mind on what scrum offences were at half time for me which didn't half banjax us a little.

Still, that's by the by, he's a pernickety sod (which I don't like) but pretty dang consistent (which is the grail), we lost our discipline and lost the kicking battle in the second half and that's what did us. If Paddy Jackson is out for a long time I will take my revenge against God and all Welshmen, and if Heaney can't get any gametime when Small Paul is playing like that, I hope his agent is working hard.

Cave was only doing extremes today wasn't he!

Yup. Playing like a guy snatching at opportunities and chances to make the big play. Can't think why...

Did a lot more good than bad for my money.

Deserving of the motm due to his first half and last 10, very dodgy in between. Jackson built the lead well, protected it terribly. Paul Marshall's decision making is all over the shop. The scrum won Ulster the game but they did little with the go forward ball when the penalties didn't come. A good win but that should be minimum for this team if they win the Pro 12, which, if Leinster don't do it, I hope they do because they could be a serious side in Europe if they broke their trophy virginity, which has grown back with ****ing interest by now!

Jackson and Cave can't make the forwards stop leaking penalties or start getting scrum penalties again (I don't get why Herbst and Black were on so long when we had Warwick and Fitzpatrick waiting to replace them). That's where it went wrong, the backs didn't impress in getting out of those situations, but it's always hard and they didn't really get the team into those situations. The pack is definitely where I'm placing the blame, the backs were victims of that and Paul Marshall going completely mad.

Honestly, Ulster could win a trophy, but the best chance for a wee while passed a couple of seasons back with a fit Fez, a fit Muller, an interested Afoa and so on. Last season was spent learning that, this season is repairing the damage. There's too many weaknesses to be dreaming real big, I think Ulster are stuck treading water a little until guys like Jackson, Henderson, Olding and so on become talismans in their own right... and that could be five years easy, it's almost unfair to expect otherwise. That and we need to get more top quality forwards. Not saying it couldn't happen, just it'll take an indecent amount of luck for everything to fall right - but then Ulster have been through an indecent amount of bad luck, so it'd be only fair.

Next week will be a greatest

Just thinking about our injury situation this season. Currently injured are:
Herbst
Henderson*
Tuohy*
Henry*
Williams*
Jackson*
Olding*
McCloskey*
Marshall
Ludik*
Trimble*
Andrew
*Have been/are long term

I would include Raaymakers but I haven't actually seen him play a game for us.

Other long term injuries this season have included:
Pienaar
Payne
Olding (earlier in season)
Tuohy (Again earlier in season)
Marshall (Again long term injury earlier in season as well)

Is it just bad luck or is there something more going on? Has our complete lack of a back row meant further strain for backs who are picking up big injuries?

Seriously worrying whatever way you look at it.

Well one list is substantially longer than the other. Ulster are essentially in the position Leicester were in October regarding injuries and we all got an earful about that.

Don't remember us using that as an excuse don't think we have ever used injuries as an excuse ;)

Boo hoo we are without Cole, Manu, Thorn, Allen, Loamanu, Morris, Slater.

Basically the same.

Not really quite sure where the attitude is coming from. I've posted in the Ulster forum regarding our injury situation – I haven't posted in the Leicester forum looking for sympathy.

The fact of the matter is that in two recent games our injury situation has been severe enough in our backs that we have been forced to put three specialist scrumhalfs in the 23. Against Toulon last week we ended with two SH's playing on the wings. Again, probably a relevant point of discussion in the Ulster forum.

I wasn't being serious, I can count (Even though I'm from Leicester). I know 7 is less than 12 and more ;)

Hence the comment above yours.

Suppose lack of smileys failed to show that.

Jonny Bell is leaving Ulster at the end of the season for, yes, you guessed it, Gloucester rugby. Swear to god if I hear that clubs name one more ****ing time.

This is a big loss, our defence has always been a strong point of our game (hard saying that after Toulon). I was actually taught P.E by Bell in my early years at CCB, very nice guy. Admittedly I haven't heard of the replacement - can anyone shed some light on him? Is he decent?

I know nothing about him but I am delighted to see some fresh ideas and thinking from outside the province. As for defence, well, we're getting Ireland's defence coach in anyway. I don't think we're gonna suffer.

Lots of time spent coaching youth too, which is a big plus for me.

True, I did forget about that. Would like to hear how the players react to this.

I think that's more the reason he's leaving. Kiss will be defense coach but it'll be interesting to see what type of coaching team he surrounds himself with.
