The Movie Thread

My first memory of Kilmer was in Top Secret, also his first role, at the time one of the funniest films around.

Not quite a spoof but upending many tropes, for example tiny humans landing and sitting in statues of pigeons.

Top Gun was actually only his forth production, third leading role and his last appearance was the Top Gun sequel.

Should have been at least nominated and won for best supporting actor for Doc Holliday for Tombstone IMO. The winner that year was Tommy Lee Jones for the Fugitive. I didn't think he was that good. Although Ralph Fiennes was also nominated for Schindler's list, who also deserved to win for that sadistic role.

Got to be honest I think TLJ as being one of the best actors around.

Too many actors you see as the actor playing a character, with Tommy Lee Jones I see the character long before the actor.

He was great in another western movie tv mini series - Lonesome Dove. But just felt for the Fugitive it was one of those he won it based on previous performances ie earned it for a career rather than that specific performance.

And of course He was great in no country for old men. But not as good as:

Agreed.

And then with Vin Diesel as Groot, it's hard to tell which is which.

Where does one wooden entity end, and another begin?

Owen Wilson, Adam Sandler, Vince Vaughan are other example who can't act or just play themselves in each role.

Still some funny films, Happy Gilmour, Waterboy, Dodge ball. Everyone knows a rugby player like Bobby Boucher.

I'd also add Sean Connery. Be it as a Russian submarine captain, Irish Police Officer or Portuguese immortal. You just got Connery being himself.

I think that's a bit unfair. All make a lot of money mostly playing versions of themselves but have works where they turn it on. Like Midnight in Paris, Uncut Gems and Hacksaw Ridge.
