The Movie Thread

Is it me or is Hollywood not releasing many good films compared to 1990s? They are either remakes or superhero sequels. They seems to have run out of ideas.
It's relative really when you actually look at it the 1990's (or 80's) weren't that exceptional in comparison but you can condense a bunch of film's from a decade and go "woah" that was amazing.

This year for example I've seen (going by this list https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_in_film#2016_films)

Eye in the Sky (I saw it this year)
Deadpool
Zoolander 2
Triple 9
Eddie the Eagle
BvS: Dawn of Justice
Captain America: Civil War
The Jungle Book
X-Men: Apocalypse
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows
Warcraft
Finding Dory
Independence Day: Resurgence
Star Trek Beyond
Suicide Squad
Bridget Jones's Baby
Doctor Strange
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

I will be watching
Arrival
Rogue One

Out of those the only ones that legitimately sucked was Jungle Book the rest went from fine to brilliant. I'm also missing a whole bunch I missed but wanted to see.

Superhero films are essentially the same as the 80's action films being made and churning out at a rate of notts, occasionally you get a few diamonds but most are generic and meld into one. In a few decades when the fad dies off we'll only really remember the exceptional ones.

I would say this has been a lean year in film, last years list is exceptional in comparison and next years prospect are more mouth watering.

What?!
I thought Jungle Book was brilliant!

I've heard Zoolander 2 is near unwatchable, it's so bad. I didn't like the first one, though, so I'm never going to put myself in a position to find out.

Agreed, I liked Jungle Book. CGI at some points was simply incredible.

I forgot Zoolander 2 was on my list in fact in general I'd like to forget Zoolander 2. I like the original but dear god.....

Jungle Book I watched on the plane to New York (after which I watched the brilliant Eddie the Eagle which may actually be one of the best 'feel good sports films' ever made). So I didn't get the full cinema experience but it felt like a steak through the heart of my childhood watching the original (it didn't ruin my childhood as muppets like to say but it felt like a stain on the original). Disney Live Action Films have been a bit all over the place Maleficent was brilliant date-rape revenge flick, Cinderella was decidedly average and Jungle Book I've explained. Problem is on that trajectory they are now remaking my favourite Disney classic in Beauty and the Beast and I'm mixed so far Emma Watson and Luke Evans YAY! Everything else less so and haven't really translated from animation well, the Beast looks too sympathetic and not beast like (it should be noted one of the joys of animation if they could do both when needed) and the various furniture talking looks stupid.

Yep - a really weird opinion there, given that s/he rates the likes of Zoolander/Eddie The Eagle/Apocolypse

I Rate Eddie The Eagle
Apocalypse is very much under the its fine category.

You like Luke Evans in Beauty and the Beast? He's a fine actor but Gaston is meant to be massive, big enough to physically take on the Beast. Evans just isn't that. Think Henry Caville would've suited the role very well, has the size and the suave, although he may not have the cockiness. Not quite sure why people have an issue with Watson as Belle, she's shown she can play the role of a woman that is objectified by most but actually very intelligent.

Watched Jason Bourne last night. I enjoyed it, unlike the godawful Legacy film with the other bloke in it (forget who), it stays true to the previous films in its style and more tense action sequences. Not as good ast the origin trilogy but good all the same. Interesting to see where they go with the new one(s) assuming they do more

I don't really like much DC stuff (actively dislike superman, so/so on Batman) but enjoyed both BvS and Suicide Squad, despite the mostly negative reviews/opinions I've seen them both get from everywhere

The upcoming Lego Batman movie genuinely looks better than most of DC's live action movies

Eye in the Sky (I saw it this year) Yeah not bad, I suppose with the dilemma that drone pilots go through
Deadpool. Yet to see, but heard good things
Zoolander 2 Sequal
Triple 9.
Eddie the Eagle
BvS: Dawn of Justice Dire
Captain America: Civil War Again nothing special
The Jungle Book Not a patch on the original animated film
X-Men: Apocalypse another superhero film, which will be forgotten in 10-15 years
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows no comment, have no desire to see this
Warcraft
Finding Dory sequal
Independence Day: Resurgence sequal
Star Trek Beyond another sequal
Suicide Squad
Bridget Jones's Baby third in a trilogy and again no desire to see this
Doctor Strange another comic book based film
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them prequel, but do want to see this

I will be watching
Arrival
Rogue One

Yeah kind of proved my point about a mix of superhero films and sequels being spouted out by Hollywood. But I grew up during the 80s/90s so you have a point about looking back and condensing a bunch of the best in my memory. I think it's natural to look back and be nostalgic, but also good/great films do stand the test of time. The only one this decade that's really stood out for me is Inception - I loved that film.

I thought the cut down versions of the songs in the Jungle book were a big let down. I grew up with the animated version and Baloo's - Bear necessities and King Louis' I wanna be like you songs are for me the most memorable Disney songs produced.

compared to:

Yep, see what you mean. The live action film has a lot to live up to. The animated beauty and the beast is right up there as Disney's best IMO. Yep also not sure of Watson as Beauty/Belle, seeing as Belle was based on Emmanuelle Béart, who was very hot in her younger years. I wouldn't say Watson is a beauty.

Jeremy Renner. Yes, Bourne Legacy really sucked. I do want to see Bourne, but because Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass are back.

As it's the season, then if you haven't seen this....

I didn't enjoy Jason Bourne too much. Action wasn't particularly impressive restive, the characters were bland and the story predictable. Sitting relatively close to the front of the cinema also made me feel ill due to all of the shaky cam.

So similar to the Bourne Ultimatum - that's Paul Greengrass for you. I remember one of my mates I was watched it with had to go home early as after he came out watching that film had bad motion sickness.
