Just saw Calvary, an irish film. It was awful. 1/5 is how I'd rate it.

I think (if you can get past your terribly sexist attitude) that we males, can also appreciate a good 'lip-licking scene' with or without anime hair!

I am now relying on the more deviant amongst us (probably Ewis) to to find the aforesaid scenes and post them. (As a google search revealed some very disturbing stuff )

You are evoking the powers of the Big E? You are a VERY courageous fellow. ;)

...I'm sorry, you have to say "Big Ewis" three times...
No idea about the scenes...

And about Beetlejuice, can you believe they got Michael Keaton to play him ?! How strange, out of all the guys in Hollywood at the time, he's not exactly classic comedy material or all weird or anything...just think of the ppl in charge of casting: "Beetlejuice....let's see here...mmmm....oh, I got it ! Let's get the guy who plays Batman ! Yeah, that Keaton guy, absolutely brilliant fit !!..."

Saw MIB the other day again. Can't believe it was 1997 when I first saw it...really good film in retrospect, such fresh Sci-Fi/comedy ideas and excellent production for its time the next two absolute trash compared to it.

Beetlewis...has a nice ring to it. :)

Beetlewis, Beetlewis, Beetlewis! Let's see what happens now! :D

I also saw Captain America yesterday, I was less distracted (altough Scarlett Johansson was quite distracting), I really enjoyed it, it was more spy thriller than super hero flick. Something fresh from Marvel.

Marvel should create a new character who is a super-fusion of all the Marvel characters. He'd be called "the Marvelous Hero Captain Man" and would be one HELLL of a cook on the side. You know, besides being able to fly, punch, throw stuff at people accurately and...stuff.

DC already did it - he's called Superman. AND he's boring as hell.

What I'd really like to see (in both the comics and the movies) is to make at least one hero appealing to women. I am not a fan of big muscles and stick-up-the-butt personalities. All the appealing characters in the Marvelverse (esp. in the movies) are the bad guys, with their introspective broodiness, full of pained expressions complete with animesque tendrils falling in their eyes. Lately I've been preferring the likes of Loki and Winter Soldier. Same thing happened when I saw Hellboy II - I had no connection with the heroes, but only with Prince Nuada, the supposed 'bad guy'.

I've come to the conclusion that comic book writers were all a bunch of bullies back in high school, picking always on the Goth and emo kids and 'long-hairs'. But they really need to look at the popularity of manga and anime to realize that people love heroes with sexy hair and broody eyes!

The only hero (well, anti-hero, I suppose) Marvel introduced in the past few years that really appealed to me was a fella named Wraith (Zak-Del): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wraith_(Marvel_Comics)#Zak-Del He was super-cool and really kicked butt (designed after Clint Eastwood's 'Man With No Name' spaghetti western character). But he only appeared in one story arc called Annihilation: Conquest. Shame that, because fans really loved him a lot.

That's cool, but you're way off-topic here. You should've posted this in the "Make Me Laugh TRF" thread.....

Superman is a very interesting character if done right; he's just not always done right.

The problem with Superman is that the films always go for the spectacle rather than the substance of the character as it's just more appealing to the general audience. I'm assuming what you've seen of the character is from the films but going by the comics he's nearly an exact representation of the introspective, broody and expressively tormented characters you prefer. Most just see a guy who is invincible and think what's so interesting about a character that can perform god like feats. But with that kind of power comes the biggest pressure out of any super hero. The ability to float in space and hear every single person's cry for help yet you can only reach so many. He will outlive every person he loves, which sucks. He has to exemplify a race that he feels disconnected from. He doesn't belong and struggles to find a balance between his biological ideals and those of his adoptive world. There's the question of nature over nurture; say what if he wasn't brought up by an upstanding and kind family like the Kents? There's a good comic called Red Son where he lands in Communist Russia. That's a really damn good one with a lot of depth and surprising twist at the end. There's so many definitive things to Superman and quite melodramatic but there actually are relatable and interesting characteristics. It would take an amazing effort to encapsulate everything about him though. So far it's been all for powers and explosions.

I'd like to see more female characters too. There are loads of them but none that I would say appeal to the female audience. I think DC have more prominent ones than Marvel. But yeah I don't think there will be any increased appeal for the female demographic any time soon! Anyway there's a s***load of manga out there to keep you girls busy ;)

I shall now start a showdown of planetary proportions!!!!

DC is better than Marvel!

Superman > Spiderman.
Batman > Wolverine.
JLA > F4

Oh yeah! I can nerd it up with the best of them! Bring it!

was scrolling through the channels and came across, as it was just starting, a film called "Dark Crystal". Quite a few English voice actors, and the narrator English as well. Watched the first half an hour, pretty good. Anybody know of this ? I'm sure it's very big amongst some of you here, seems like the kind of film that must be very nostalgic to lots of young guys now.

Yep that and Labyrinth were 2 films I remember quite well from my early years on VHS did realised till a few years ago it was Jim Henson and Frank Oz product although I think I was freaked out by the Skeksis (Bad dudes), haven't seen it in a long time though remember most of it Trial by stone etc. was fairly dark for a family film at the time from what I remember.

I assume that's the film your talking about?

I had Dark Crystal as a kid, too. Loved Labyrinth so my parents got me that because it looked similar - used to scare the crap out of me

Just watched 'The Worlds End'. Fitting finale to the Cornetto trilogy by Pegg and Frost.

Daftly funny.
