The Movie Thread

Shutter Island. This is a great film. The tension is built up tremendously and although it loses its way towards the end, the climax more than makes up for it. Very intriguing film. 8/10

A Serious Man. Just finished watching it and my God, though the pacing will put many people off, and the story is very ambiguous, it is absolutely fascinating to watch. Highly recommended.

Spent a morning channelsurfing from 'The Hottie and the nottie', to 'Disaster Movie' to 'Something I can't remember the ***le of, but it had that babyface from Desperate Housewives in it and an indian callcenter worker'. And I managed to get the gist of all of them. Loathed them all utterly too, it started out as a challenge to myself to see if I could sit through a Paris Hilton movie. I didn't succeed, but I'm not sure that's a sad thing.

Ninja Assassin - Quality film, just don't take it seriously :p (though it's hard to when there's limbs flying all over the place). It's like an old school martial arts film, just with more special effects/'realistic' coreography (as in, the punches aren't obviously about 6" away from the other guys face, not "Yeah, doing a triple backflip and taking a guys headoff could happen in real life")

Went to Girl With the Dragon Tattoo last night with the gf. Not a great date film tbh, there's 2 rape scenes and a lot of gore... but besides that, it's excellent. I'm not really sure what genre it is either, since it's a crime mystery like any of the ones you see on the TV, but has several other dimensions.

The King of Comedy. Scorsese film on the aura of celebrity and of fan obsession. It's a harrowing depiction of a wannabe comedian doing everything in his power to try to get to the top. Great stuff. 8/10.

Went and saw The Green Zone last week, 8/10. While they did a great job of building up a believably tense and exciting setting in Baghdad, I felt the underlying message was a bit clunky. It was as though they were treating the audience as if they'd never known what happened in Iraq. Of course some people probably don't know, in which case it's fair enough I suppose.

Either way, a pretty entertaining movie overall, and Matt Damon was very impressive, I'd certainly recommend it to anyone into war movies.

Alice in Wonderland. Meh, I made the mistake of seeing it in 3D, so the visuals were muddy and quite **** frankly. It seems like it was put together messily as there is no real strong focus on narrative, just little strands that are thrown at you amid all the quirkiness. The Cheshire Cat and Depp's Mad Hatter are sometimes amusing but they don't make up for the rest of this messy flick. 3/10.

Watched Armored yesterday, what a disappointment!!!

Thought that there would be more action in it than a tramp and a cop getting shot and 1 member of the "team" jumping of a building...wtf?
Sound was also poor! 3/10 from me.

13: Beloved
Thai film, thought it was quality
Apparently they're doing a western remake of it in the near future, hopefully they don't ruin it

The Sixth Sense - saw it before, but we had people around so kept getting interrupted. Not a good film. The irritating thing was the music, all schmaltzy strings: soundtrack is 50% of a film's impact, and it kept getting in the way. I read that Shamaylan wrote the screenplay as an Exorcist type thing with a pyschiatrist instead of a priest, and tossed it around to get feedback - someone said, Why don't you make the psychiatrist into a ghost? and that's how it got the famous twist. Social welfare remake of Ghost, with some mildly creepy stuff thrown in - tearjerker for the girls rather than a horror film.

Shutter Island - Awesome film. Loved it! 8/10

Law Abiding Citizen - Regardless of what the critics said, this was the best film i have seen in a while. 9/10

Inglorious Basterds - Never been a Tarentino fan. Thought Pulp Fiction was horse crap, and Kill Bill was lame. This movie was just too long. 5/10.

How to train your Dragon (in 3d) - Brilliant. Best animation i have seen. 10/10
