The Metal Thread

haha Mithras sounds so close to Morbid Angel on a number of levels. The soloing especially is like something taken out of 'Domination'.

stormer: I get what you're saying, but I'm never angry when I listen to metal, I can listen to it when I'm dead tired, pumped up, laid back, in the car, shopping, reading an article online...there's absolutely no state of mind for it, not anymore than when I listen to J.S.Bach or Michael Jackson or the Beatles. I hate conflict and death and suffering in real life, but this is art.
Aristotle used to talk about the 'catharsis' phenomenon in art where basically artistic fields take things from the daily life but 'purify' them. Art can take something ultra-negative, like death and suffering or destruction, and make it into something ultra-positive. A movie like the Godfather or classic Greek tragedies are dramatic and don't end well often, and yet they're respectively considered a great all-time movie and beautiful pieces of literature, anyways.
Same thing for a band like Cannibal Corpse, the death metal band: their musical compositions depict a horrible, cataclysmic environment with ultra-dark, hateful grooves; but to me it's positive energy bars. I'm in a super good mood when I listen to it, because it's so invigorating and energy-conducive and offers me a world of carefully crafted and imagined patterns and musical ideas, no matter how chaotic in nature.

Anyways in "real metal" there isn't too much positive, but I like this mainstream band in terms of a positive message and colorful melodies Killswitch Engage (don't mind the name), a couple of pretty good songs:

It's easy-to-listen-to stuff, with powerful choruses. And Howard Jones, the vocalist, has a super powerful almost-operatic voice.

A more 'real metal' band, Soilwork from Sweden, mix the typical Swedish melodic metal style with alternative rock/synth-rock and produce what I think are by far the best choruses in the business. Not always uplifting, but beautiful:

No example tracks from me at the moment, but there's a ton of metal out there which concentrates on melody and messages of, if not uplifting, at least not anger.

That said, while I can get how as a Christian you'd be uncomfortable with overtly satanic/anti-deist/pagan metal, and maybe also the "Booze n' *****es" side you get with some hair metal bands, all of the angry stuff... as Ewis says, a lot of it can be carthatic. You can put your anger and sadness into listening to an album and leave it behind. But hey, that's us, and maybe not you. Just backing him up as saying all that anger isn't something you have to take into you, it can be a place to put things.

To be honest, I spend more time listening to the less angry, more melodic side of things anyway. Stormer, any bands out there you do like already?

I produced this stuff some years ago and decided recently to upload it all for free after all. It's eclectic industrial death metal, this album entirely instrumental. If you can get past the meh production and enjoy the musical ideas for what they are, you might find some original stuff in there.
Here's the playlist:

Here's track 2 as a sample, but no two tracks are the same:

If you still have the raw tracks I might be able to spruce the production up a little, if you like?

You ever listened to Thorns? I have a feeling you might like it a lot.

well that's awesome of you to offer, but I'd rather you listen to it a bit more when you have the time. If you don't like it, there's no point, don't force yourself. Never heard of Thorns, no. Will check it out.

just listened to this:

I see how you'd feel it's reminiscent of Phenomenon in parts, really do. And it's pretty good in parts, will check this one you've posted. Yeah pretty good stuff rats, you got me hooked on 3 bands so far, well done :p Ulster-ate, AmigaSpill Coffee and now this Thorns band. Will check em out when I'm sober again tomorrow, but I like the darkness so far and they like to use those 'eclectic' elements here and there, could be more technical, really would work well with this...

Y'all are massive metal hipsters.

I'm going to see Alestorm for my birthday in October, so let's all enjoy some good old pirate metal and stop competing over who's favourite band has the weirdest time signature or has the fewest albums sold.

hadn't seen these two. The DF one is brilliant as usual, the backing vocals at 0:56  Rehfeldt is a YouTube genius, one of the few. The Beatles one though :p what cracks me up is the backup vocalists.

One of my all-time favorites of his:

0:52 "ERRRRR !!!..."

That's genius, it's the subtle flourishes that really make it something else.

This has been in my head for the last 4 days:

There are few bands who manage to envelope me quite like Altar of Plagues do (Neurosis and Amenra being the main others). This particular track is a real slow burner and requires some patience...plus the production is really pretty low-fi (dat guitar tone). But it's such a great track - James and Dave absolutely nail the vocals (it's a big step up from White Tomb in that regard). There's an emotional authenticity and vulnerability in this which really gets to me.

I see, you seem to like large landscapes of forceful distorted guitar chords, big powerful cosmoses (yeah that plural apparently exists) of sound with a predominant rhythmic direction. I quite like it, a bit too simple (not technically, but musical idea wise) in parts, but I like the power-melancholy this develops. Probably considered post-metal this today no ?...feel this doesn't need much to be really good.

Here's a little modern Suffocation for y'all bishes:

dat chorus.....

I still count it as atmospheric black metal because I'm a betrayer of kvlt or whatever, hahaha. Mm, you've got my tastes pretty down, I like to be enveloped by my music and I have a serious appreciation for interesting rhythms, especially when they're subtle. I also really prize the emotional authenticity of music, I can usually tell when it's 'genuine' or not. Bit hard to describe in precise terms. But it's one of the reasons why, even though I like all of their albums, I connect most strongly with Opeth's Orchid and Morningrise. There's a raw personal component to those albums which kind of gets lost later on a bit. Maybe that's just me, but that's the sense I get.

Not bad at all, which albums of theirs can you recommend? I'm often pretty take-it-or-leave-it with a lot of death metal but this has a lot going for it.

And now for something a little more...noisy.

Dynamics? What is dynamics? I love Celeste even if their sound is pretty limited...and if listening to a whole album is a pretty exhausting experience (> 600 plays according to Last.fm though, what can I say, I'm a masochist). Funnily enough, apparently they weren't really aware of black metal until at least 1 album into their career.
