A fullback doesn't have to be able to entertainingly weave through half the team to be considered dangerous. Monty and Burke's point tally shows this.

What does goal kicking have to do with how dangerous a fullback is with the ball in hand?

I'd personally take one of, if not the most lethal counter attacker over an average to above average full back who can kick goals, which is all Percy is.

very true, but being a top goal kicker is always a bonus. It takes pressure from the Fly half. I imagine England would have had a very different 4 years had they had a goal kicking fullback to take pressure of their fly-halves like Hodgeson.



I do agree though that the full back should be judged on their abilities in play (offensively and defensively) before goal kicking is really considered.

a fullback's defensive and attacking play is more demanded in the reseme than goal kicking. i also don't get why montgomery is the best fullback in so many peoples eyes, yes monty's a goodish fullback because his got good tactical kicking, but i think his defense is crap when 1 on 1, and i dont think he offers too much on attack, his goal kicking is only bonus and dosn't have much to do with the fact his a fullback, also just because he helped kick a team to wc victory dosn't mean his the best in his position. overratted in my opinion. There are better full backs in muliaina, latham, robinson, hernandez who are great on attack and got good allround games.

lol, Monty is so ridiculously over rated. He's been crap his whole career up until 2 years ago when he started to kick more goals now he's suddenly the best. I remember a time when Boks fans were slitting their wrists whenever Percy was around. He's improved his defence a bit, kicks a bit better, but that's it, he's nothing special.

[/b][/quote] boseman, get over percy. he only kicks goals! so can the 1st 5 of most teams. how you can consider him great is shocking. apart from his goal kicking he doesn't hold a light to the likes of cullen and others of his calibre.

Basing on what I saw in World Cup and lately H-Cup, I think Nani Corleto is at the moment one of the best. Hernandez is excellent too but it's been a long time we do not see him at fullback, except one half against the Harlequins last sunday. Latham, for sure, is still a great fullback.

I saw Montgomery at some occasions since his debut in Perpignan and yes, I think is a little bit overrated. He's nothing special in attack, average at defense, and at the moment he's even not pretty acurate at goal kicking.

But I have to admit he did an excellent year 2007 and an almost perfect World Cup. (although he's very 'classic')
