Sigh at this country...

The Springboks’ World Cup jersey has been unveiled.

Not only has the Bok emblem moved to the left sleeve but it is half the size of the Protea emblem.

As keo.co.za reported in May 2009, the IRB Rugby World Cup logo has to appear on the right-hand side of all teams’ jerseys at the tournament. Saru asked the IRB to make an exception for the Boks, but the world governing body refused to budge, which means the Protea (the official emblem of all South African national sports teams) is on the left-hand side of the jersey and the Bok emblem on the left sleeve.

Saru, to its credit, did everything it could to keep the Bok on the chest. It put the Bok emblem above the Protea on the left-hand side of the Springbok Women’s jersey for their 2010 World Cup campaign, but this was rejected by Sasoc (South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee) before the tournament began. Saru then had to put a green patch with the Protea over both emblems (to cover them up) and moved the Bok to the sleeve.

There was speculation that Canterbury could move its logo from the middle of the jersey to the sleeve to make room for the Bok, but this has failed to materialise.

The logo of new sponsors Absa is not allowed to be on the Bok jersey for the World Cup.

Goddamn protea? That emblem sure helped our cricket team at their World Cup.

Goddamn complaints over a stupid f*cking badge which seems to be the official emblem of every other South African national sports teams.

They will still be the same (very) old Boks.

Not a fan of it to be honest.

Funnily enough my current dissertation is on the British Lions of 1974 and the Apartheid Movement in Britain. Interesting on the opinions of people about the Bok emblem and the Protea.

Well, if you mean the whole apartheid-weight people add to the Springbok emblem I can only say this:

The Springbok is the emblem of the National Rugby Union team, the Protea is just an emblem of the country. Of course it would be nice to put both on the chest but in chronological order, the Springbok should be placed on it first. I heard some people say that the Springbok is the white Rugby emblem, the Protea is the black Rugby emblem. To me this is bullshit and I think people should stop thinking in black and white but start thinking grey.

Nahhh ............. well kinda :)

I heard some people say that the Springbok is the white Rugby emblem, the Protea is the black Rugby emblem.
All joking and trolling aside, is this not the main issue? This perception that the Bok brand/concept/logo is a legacy from the bad old days. Is there any solution other then removing it?

Given the history of your country you cant really say it must be kept as the prime logo, regardless of how petty you perceive the reasons to remove it to be.

Nelson Mandela did endorse the emblem because he acknowledged its significance and value of the Springbok as an emblem. Mandela called it correct in my eyes. If this man says it should be the emblem then it should be.

What annoys me, is not the fact that the Protea has replaced it, but rather the fact that the Canterbury emblem stays in the middle, and doesn't get relegated to the sleeve to make space for the Bok emblem.

Well that was never going to happen. Cantebury pay a lot of money to put their logo right there.

Maybe it'lll be fixed when the next commercial deal is put in place with a shirt manufacturer.

It would not be the first time Canterbury places their logo lower or on the sleeves. O well... We'll see

Just curious... Does this mean Luke Watson will play for the Springboks again?

Gotta say I dont like the design of that shirt.

the most god awful jersey ever . how are non rugby followers / new people to rugby meant to know why sa are called the springboks ?
but at least its wc jersey season again :) cant wait until the wc !!!!!!!!!!1

Apart from the Springbok being on the sleeve (which is a total buzzkill) I am very disappointed in the design Canterbury created. It has nothing special. It's plain and has nothing to distinguish that it's a CCC jersey.

Yep ... definitely not a fan of the whole "move the Springbok emblem to the sleeve" idea ... a very visual example of politics interfering in sport again ... if it was in New Zealand, the Politicians would have suggested retaining the Springbok emblem on the chest, but making it Red :D

Not bad, glad the Bok is still there.

On a related note, if Wales keep their current one sans Admiral logo, I think it will look pretty good.
Still wish we kept Brains onboard.

@Ezequiel, hope not! (Unless the Earl's father has a word with PDivvy)

I think it is a disgrace! I will not support this in any way. It doesnt even matter if we appeal to SARU because they just dont listen. I think the best way is to ensure empty stadia and loss on sale of merchandise, but knowing the SA aptitude towards making a statement not even this will come to fruition.

I am afraid the proud era of the Springbok legacy is long gone!

I agree on not buying the shirt but staying away from matches because of this is ridiculous
