[Six Nations 2018] Round 2: England vs Wales (10/02/2018)

... & unless we've sent him back... Owen Williams on the bench.

Can't see it happening the RFU would throw the book at them.
What book? I know that IRB9 exists for international release, and that clubs can't stand in the way of nations for selection.
I genuinely don't know if there's a clause either way for late injury replacements.

It's not like the WRU have good-will with Saracen's/PRL to protect - quite the opposite in fact, so i don't think they'd be too bothered about pissing off some random club that has nothing to do with them beyond employing a Welshman.
If anything, I can see them being far more willing to **** off an English club than a Welsh one

Hes been released back to his club there must be a limit in call backs due to injury. I can't see Saracens willingly releasing a player this close to kick off and I can't see RFU being to happy with them if they did.

I imagine theres a fair notice clause in there - seems odd that Wales could tell Sarries a couple of hours before kick off that they're taking their starting winger away from them

I dunno, is there? If so, then how close is too close?
If IRB9 doesn't forbid a late call-up, then the late call-up is allowed, no matter how pissed off the club.
Common sense would seem to dictate that a late injury requires a late call-up, which would be better than an incomplete bench. Common sense would also dictate that the player called up comes from a club playing at home, where they'd have a replacement already in the stadium - but that common sense is less likely to apply to a club from a different league (there is good-will between RFU and the English clubs, there is bad-will between WRU and the English clubs).

Of course, today it's not happening, but I don't know what the rules would say for a future occasion (and probably depending on when the decision is made; once club warm-up starts, probably too late).
Plenty of teams take travelling reserves for injuries in the warm-up (England have kept Mercer in camp this weekend), but there absolutely is a time when a fresh call-up is fair, and a time when it isn't; but where is that cross over? 24 hours? 2.4 hours? 24 minutes?

It's become a bit of a pressure for England to deliver bearing in mind the teams on paper, home advantage and these welsh injuries, of which Leigh Halfpenny withdrawing is just the icing on the cake. Good as Wales are, there's now no excuse at all for England not to be in charge of this game and to win. On paper, bearing in mind these factors, it should be comfortable. That doesn't mean it will be so simple.

I'd say past 18:00 the day before but if it's written down it's likely 24 hours.

I dunno why but I just don't particularly like Gareth Thomas as a pundit

Halfpenny is a hell of a loss. Have to question putting Anscombe at Fullback. I think the safer option would have been Patchell at fullback with Anscombe at 10, but then I guess it's an attempt at causing the least unrest in the backline after last week.

Basically if England break the line, Anscombe is unlikely to make the tackle at FB haha. He does offer a different option in attack.
