SA franchises in 2013

I was thinking the same when I read the article. That would be a great swap, not just for WP rugby, but for SA Rugby too!

That and Brian Mujati would complete my christmas wishlist though with Pat Cilliers at least we do have a decent tight head for once so I wouldn't cry over Mujati.

Okay, so jantjies hasn't signed yet but I'm sure he'll follow Taute and Cilliers.

Hein, your post made me think what a 'state of origin' Currie cup could look like ITO line-up. Lets have a go! WP fans back me up if I am forgetting anyone who might be worth including;

1 Guthro Steenkamp (Tolousse)
2 Schalk Brits (Saracens)
3 WP Nel (Edinburgh)
4 Eben Etzebeth
5 Andries Bekker
6 Francois Louw (Bath)
7 Schalk Burger
8 Ernst Joubert (Saracens)
9 Francois Hougaard (Bulls)
10 Morne Steyn (Bulls)
11 Willie le Rouw (Cheetahs)
12 Jean de Villiers
13 Juan de Jongh
14 JP Pietersen (Sharks)
15 Gio Aplon

It'd be very interesting to see the EP Kings vs Lions everything considered; who'd come out on top if all was level.

Ahh man, let me try for the Bulls

1. Dean Greyling
2. John Smit (Saracens), Deon Fourie (WP), Gary Botha(somewhere up north)
3. Werner Kruger
4. Danie Rossouw(Japan, soon to be France
5. Bakkies Botha (France)
6. Jacques Botes (Sharks)
7. Arno Botha
8. Pierre Spies
9. Fourie Du Preez (Japan)
10. Louis Fouche
11. Gerhard van Den Heever (WP)
12. Wynand Olivier (Japan)
13.
14. JP Pietersen (he's from Witbank, and actually falls under the Pumas Region, but for Super Rugby purposes he'd fall under the Bulls region)
15.

I can't think of anyone for 13 and 15...

I'll do a Cheetahs one (while waiting for Someoke to take up the cause of the Kings). I'm thinking the Cheetahs are going to be F-off strong LOL, let me have a look;

1 Coenie Oosthuizen
2 Bismarck du Plessis
3 Jannie du Plessis
4 Flip van der Merwe (Potch is on the border c'mon) otherwise Jandre Marais
5 Wilhelm Steenkamp
6 Heinrich Brussow
7 Juan Smith
8 Jean Deysel (Marcell Coetzee if Potch is acceptable)
9 Ruan Pienaar
10 Johan Goosen
11 Sarel Pretorius
12 Francois Steyn
13 Robert Ebersohn
14 Rayno Benjamin
15 Sias Ebersohn

Also, Hein, Use Jaque Fourie and Riaan Viljoen at 13 and 15 (Carltenville) for your Bulls!!!

Also, Michael Killian has signed for the Kings. Decent signing but the Kings are going nowhere with only decent signiings in non-key positions.

Michael Killian has been playing for the Kings, was he then on loan to them?? he played last week vs the Cheetahs.

Sorry, Hein, for some reason I thought Carltonville was in Limpopo..

Golden Lions:

1 Wicus Blaauw
2
3 Heinke van der Merwe
4 Flip van der Merwe
5 Gerhard Mostert
6 Wikus van Heerden
7 Marcell Coetzee
8 Duane Vermeulen
9 Charl McLeod
10 Butch James
11 Bryan Habana
12 Jaco Taute
13 Jaque Fourie
14 Louis Ludik
15 Riaan Viljoen

Lions are fooked for Hookers; ALL the good ones come from Free State and Bulls country.

To avoid confusion the ones I looked at is birth place only. You could argue that someone can be born somewhere and raised somewhere else but you can only be born at one place while you can be raised all across the country. I suppose some guys can be considered for multiple provinces/franchises.

Can you guys do a KZN one as well?

LOL, you lazy? I'll see what I can do; thought you guys would know better who might be 'from' KZN. I'll start with KZN B;

Southern Kings
1
2 Bandise Maku, Siya Ntubeni
3
4 Steven Sykes, Davon Raubenheimer
5 Johann Muller
6 Keegan Daniel, Siya Kolisi, Philip van der Walt, Deon Stegmann
7 Dewald Potgieter, Jacques Potgieter
8 CJ Stander, Ryan Kankowski, Joe van Niekerk
9
10 Johan Goosen, Elton Jantjies
11 Lwazi Mvovo, Lionel Mapoe
12 Tim Whitehead, Jan Serfontein
13 JJ Engelbrecht
14 Bjorn Basson
15 Stefan Terblanche

K Natal Sharks (franchise covers KZN province only T_T)
1
2 Craig Burden
3 BJ Botha
4
5
6
7
8
9
10
11 Peter Grant
12 Brad Barritt
13 Waylon Murray
14
15 Pat Lambie

^^ That's about as much as I'm willling to do; KZN sucks! They should rather have dropped than the Lions to make room for the Kings in the long run :p

What I got from this exercise;

Bulls and Cheetahs for hookers
Cheetahs for props
WP and Bulls for locks
EP for loose forwards
WP and Bulls for scrummies
EP and KZN for flyhalves
WP and Lions for centers
WP and EP for wings
Lions for fullbacks

KZN sucks balls. Just teasing, guys. Andre Joubert makes up for.. oh wait.

No, no, no, bad PD.

Lambie at outside half, Francois Steyn at fullback. (Sharks Academy)

He started at Free State.

I wasn't sure how far we were going back.
Daniel played for Border in Craven Week, and went to the Sharks Academy afterwards.
Steyn was another academy boy.

If we want to go purely by birth, Joe Pietersen was born in KZN (Vryheid)
So was Ruan Combrinck (also a Michaelhouse student), but I wouldn't put him in the Sharks 3rd XV.

Deon Fourie staying with WP/Stormers.
Should make up for the deficit of backrowers with Koster leaving.

With the inclusion of Franco van der Merwe, the Sharks look very, very dangerous. Let's see the changes since the start of the 2012 season:

Franco van der Merwe (Golden Lions)
Francois Steyn (Racing Metro)

Out for 2013:
Alistair Hargreaves (Saracens)

A loss in numbers but a net gain in quality. Steyn, Whitehead and Jordaan really make up for the lack the Sharks had in the centers in recent years. You guys have also made up for poor locks. Certainly a top 6 team and could push for top spot if they get greater consistency. Botes and Michalak the only real losses but you have depth in the loose forwards and there's Lambie.

I am just a bit disappointed we had to see Viljoen at fly-half for so long. I would have preferred a U21 fly-half in stead of playing a full-back out of position. Fred Zeilinga could have gotten his chance.

We lost 3 locks in Skeate, Sykes and Ali but all three are not good enough. Now we have 3 young lads coming through (Marais brothers and du Toit) plus some experience in Franco van der Merwe.
