[RWC2023 QF2] Ireland vs New Zealand (14/10/2023)

Simple fact is that anyone who's watched Irish rugby will tell you this is pound for pound the best team we've put out in a quarter final, in the best for with an incredible CV built up through this world cup cycle.

It's different for those reasons. Doesn't guarantee a result on the day, but should be confident

Their confidence about winning every WC is incredible given it's for a team that is historically rubbish at them.
Absolutely not the case lol. I didn't give us a hope in hell 4 years ago in the exact same situation.

It just shows that different times bring different teams to the forefront. Even a decade ago, mentioning that Ireland could break the world record for most consecutive wins would have been seen as a joke. If they do it, then well done to them.

They are 1 behind England and NZ arnt they?

Hard to imagine Irelands world crashing around them, losing ANOTHER quarter final, losing out on equalling the greatest streak in rugby, massive dissapointment at another RWC.

Before the tournament what would Irish fans have seen as success and failure? IMO anything short of a final is probably failure for this irish team, a semi would be a disappointment especially considering how they would play in that semi, a quarter would be a disaster?

That's my point, Ireland hasn't become successful at WCs yet. They're confident of doing well in a tournament they've never progressed beyond the QF of
That's probably because form, current results and standards of other teams has something to do with it. They have every reason to be confident the same as France, SA and the AB's.

It's not so much Irish fans / pundits being arrogant, more a vocal miniority being jealous with a superiority complex.

Take Virgin Media Sport from YouTube. The pundits on there are unbearable

Ireland are three point favorites. Feel like on form they should be favored by more so I guess public sentiment is still thinking All Blacks are real strong.

I do think Ireland are a better match up for the All Blacks than the the other top three teams but Ireland should have enough to get by.

Ireland are just incredible at the moment and their form has been developed the way world champions should, building over time, centred around a style of play that they've mastered, and with some key players who are world class. I do want France to win the WC because I am a sucker for a fairytale and it would be incredible in France, but Ireland equally would be fantastic.

They know how to beat this NZ team, they've done it enough now. Ireland and France have had major roles over the last 4 years in dismantling the NZ imperious mindset that NZ seemed to have for so long, along with the NH mindset that it takes a close to a miracle to beat them. They are now not unbeatable but completely beatable on the day, even if they are still an outstanding team on paper. It's going to be an awesome game and I fully expect an Irish win. Go well Ireland.

I'm getting very nervous now. 6 hours is torture by pint.
And strangely, from what I've seen and heard, they're not half as critical of NZ as many on here are, including Kiwis. And how very dare the No. 1 ranked side in the world be confident going into a game.

If Ire are properly on it, and there's no reason to think they won't be, they should have enough.

Knock out rugby's a very very different beast though. No second chances, no next year, no we can still win the series. And if there's one team you don't want to give a sniff to, it's still the Kiwis.

Favourite / underdog tags reversed from previous RWCs just adds a different dimension.

Could be another classic.

Have managed to avoid nerves during the week but so so nervous now that the Wales - Argentina game is over. May genuinely struggle to watch if it's close towards the end.

Kia Haka, ALL Blacks! It's a win-win situation, lose and Razor's era will begin a little bit earlier, win and get another chance to lift the WWE trophy!

I'm torn on this one, obviously want to honour my family with getting behind NZ but also think Ireland stand a better chance of winning the whole thing if they go through and rugby would benefit from a NH team lifting the trophy.

Thankfully this won't be read aloud on the WhatsApp call we'll be having. 👀
