[RWC2023] England vs Argentina (09/09/2023)

Englands tactics were exemplary. Complaining about the attack when what they were doing was so effect, is ridiculous. To be clear though, I'm sure a lot of you are just noting there was no attack, and therefore no evidence that they can attack if they needed to in a different situation.

They did what they needed under the circumstances and got a well deserved win. I'm not sure how well that will work against a tougher opponent, but that's for another day.

Argentina made a mess of this. Took far too long to get into the game and failed to capitalise on England's weaknesses. It could have cost them a chance at progressing too.

Suppose must raise the question - was that intensity an emotional performance or can they recreate it?

I hope so. Ride the wave man …

That was disgusting lol
from the argie pov I do think this is super interesting
best players ever in terms of experience, professionalism and general conditioning, some of them even played in NZ (rugby mecca), all of them pros
this is the end of the cycle 2015-25: super rugby experience, 3 WC's for Matera and already failed miserably in '19
they already matched the best result in our history (almost) in their first WC, did they peaked early?
I mean, are they going to waste it all away? world class HC, tested specialist (contepomi, kidwell), and yet they can't concentrate enough to perform.
Why is being an argentinean rugby fun this hard? anyway, at least tomorrow finn russell's on so i'll be able to see some rugby hahahahaha

What the actual f***?! How can anyone complain about Englands lack of attack. They played with 14 men for 77mins. They played with their heads.

Some of you need to give your heads a wobble. It's a World Cup, not an autumn international
I don't know if that is aimed at me. I am not complaining about a lack of attack in this game (although they did butcher an overlap in their usual style). I am saying that concluding they will suddenly be able to pass coherently and break defensive formations as a result of a resilient defensive display against a lobotomised opponent is not a conclusion I would make. I also think England have no chance against a top 5 opponent if the tactic is 8 man rugby and drop goals (which was a necessity in this match).

I would argue it takes more than confidence to be a coherent attacking force. It takes decent coaching and a basic level of player ability. I saw nothing to suggest England will wake up with those qualities later on in this tournament. I guess of they put 30+ on Samoa and Japan that would be the beginnings of the signs I am horrifically wrong.

With this draw England (and Argentina) can offer almost nothing in attack and still have a decent chance of a semifinal. I genuinely hope someone steps up in that half of the draw but personally I saw no evidence of that today.
