RWC: Springboks - Samoa (30-09-2011, 20:30)

Is there any reason why we couldn't call on David Smith? I'm not too sure if this was raised earlier this year but if you want x-factor, he's got that in spades - just ask the Western Force.

He is the biggest fiapoko in the history of fiapokos. He chose to go for the All Blacks now hes stuck.

David would've made some better use of the ball posessions that Sailosi got (no disrespect to Sailosi, good player just hasnt fired yet). Theres no doubt he'd be a valuable player, but he chose a path that doesnt lead to the Manu but the money and understandably so.

Im sure hes somewhere wishing he could play just at much as we wish he could.

I thought it was something like that...so sad...

Samoa 27 - SA 25

And injuries all around.

I hope not but the Samoans have always liked to up their physicality against us so it's a distinct possibility; I just hope there's no off the ball stuff.

South Africa 46 - 9 Samoa

Jeesh, that's aggressive. LOL. I know we've beaten Samoa well in the past but I can't see Habana scoring 4 this time round. Maybe with that record business out of the way.... I doubt it but nothing would make me happier than Habana scoring a few.

If you thought that was aggressive, wait until you see Bismarck unleashed and actually playing more than 40 minutes!!

It would be amazing if Habana could do the same as he did in 2007 vs Samoa... but my guess is it's some other black guy in our team's turn for the 4 tries in a WC vs Samoa...

1995 - Chester Williams
2007 - Bryan Habana
2011 - Beast? JP Pietersen?

OOOEE! I keep on forgetting Bissie will be starting and will probably be a tad ****** off (at everyone and everything LOL) as well.

If Hougaard or Aplon were starting I'd have picked one of them to possibly do the 4 tries vs Samoa RWC 'tradition'. De Jongh has a nose for the tryline as well. But the selectors have gone for the 'bigger' backs. My money is on JF to cross most often.

Donder, can imagine if the Beast scored four tries, I will go "mal" if that had to happen.
Read this on a Wimpy mug the other day,"We braai because BBQ is a chips flavor." SA, what a place. ;)

Maybe Habana will perform again without all the pressure and stingel-stres ;) I'm picking F.Steyn to be the top scorer this game. Have a slight man-crush on him and Brussouw.

I know I said SA by 15 but I just got this feeling that the Boks are going to post a big one in this match

Samoa 28 South Africa 20

Stormer - There shouldnt be any off the ball stuff. Bakis Botha is not playing!! Samoa have a twinkled toe winger called David Lemi that if the Boks dont watch carefully could create a bit of havoc out wide.

Goog to see Habana on the wing, hopefully he will get to see some if any ball tonight. We all know the Boks tactics will be to kick it up high and get Habana to chase....

Have you seen us play at the World Cup? Ever since Steyn moved to inside center with Lambie at full back we've been a team who plays with ball in hand more often. The only kicking we do lately, is place-kicking to the corners... We hardly used any up-and-unders against Fiji, Namibia and Wales... Now that we have Bismarck in the starting line-up, we actually have the fire-power up front and with Matfield I hope there's some better decision-making during the match

It would be nice to see some moves with Lambie as first receiver, so much more of a threat than Morne. Samoans will be drooling thinking about Morne's turnstyle tackling technique too. Perhaps Morne will come off early in the 2nd half. Wonder a bit about the 5/2 split. Obviously it will be physical but hoping it won't be too close in the last 20/25 minutes. Maybe Spies will move out to the wing later on...

South Africa 46 - 9 Samoa

I'd be very surprised if South Africa scored 46 points versus Samoa. Samoa's defense has been pretty strong during this tournament: they have only conceded 36 points in all their games so far. Both South Africa and Samoa easily beat Fiji and Namibia (though South Africa's wins were more convincing), and both had very close matches versus Wales. I think South Africa will certainly start as strong favourites, but people who think it will be an easy win for South Africa may be in for a big shock! Samoa is reasonably strong up front, though will need to be at their best to match South Africa in the tight exchanges. I think South Africa do have a clear edge at the lineout; Samoa's lineout has been ok, but they have been losing 2-3 throws per game, so I imagine Matfield could cause some problems. South Africa again have an edge in the loose; I expect Brussow will cause a lot of problems for Samoa. South Africa have some strong ball runners in the pack (du Plessis, Mtawarira, Rossouw, Spies, Burger), but I actually think Samoa match them here, with Johnson, Sshwalgher, Tekori, Stowers, Fa'asavalu, and Tuifua all noted ball runners.

Where I think Samoa may attempt to exploit South Africa is close to the fringes of the ruck (either with Fotuali'i himself, or with forwards running off his shoulder), as the lateral defense of some of the South African is not that good (though the fact that John Smith isn't there means there will be far fewer gaps to exploit!). I expect Samoa will send quite a few ball runners down Morne Steyn's channel too, so I expect Brussow and Burger will be doing a lot of tackling! I like the inclusion of Fuimaono-Sapolu in the midfield as he should add some creativity to Samoa's attack, but I do worry about how he will go defending F Steyn and Fourie. There are some great matchups out wide -if Samoa can make some space for their outside backs they could cause a lot of problems (Paul Williams in particular has looked in outstanding form).

Overall I still think South Africa will win due to there slight advantage in the tight, and their obvious advantage at the breakdown, but I suspect it will be pretty close. I'm picking South Africa by 10.

I'd be tempted to switch Lambie and Morne in certain attacking situations. Lambie and Steyn as inside backs could be a fantastic combination.
Deysel would be a huge asset for this game. Need someone like him hitting every ruck with Bakkies out. Any idea when Bakkies and Muller are expected to be fit?

Even before his hamstring Bakkies was really subdued with his achilles and hard to see how he'll be 100% again in this WC. With the way Danie Rossouw is playing he probably deserves to keep the 4 jersey into the knockout stages

I've been to all the Samoan rugby games and two of South Africas games. I have also been to both team trainings and trust me South Africa will be employing the up and under tactic because the know Samoa have a solid defensive line and would rather put pressure by kicking the up and unders. They know tonight Samoa will be a different kettle of fish than from the previous games they have played. Samoa will look to open it up a bit more than in previous games. Its all or nothing for Samoa. A few bruised bodies in the Samoan team but that wont stop them from competing with the up front physical style of the Boks. South Africa and Samoa both thrive on physicality.... You have your opinions and I have mine, thats what forums are all about!!

Samoa mo Samoa!!

Hey Uso's, any official word on the Manu team for tonights game? Has Kane Thompson really pulled out because of injury?
