Rugby Championship: South Africa - Australia (29/09/2012)

Not too unhappy about the late changes. Rough to have both Goosen and Taute two spots away on debut but I like it! Probably the right time and if our forwards can trump the Aussies the young guns should be able to fire.

Am I the only one who hopes Jean de Villiers plays his best match ever so we can finally have a captain playing in his best position? It would mean Steyn moving to full-back or the bench...

It would be great if JdV suddenly got back to his best and started captaining for once. Its probably too much to ask for and I don't think its the long term solution but for now, certainly, it would be great.

I'm not a fan of F Steyn at 15 though and I'd have at 22 or at 12. 15 should be either Ludik or otherwise one of Taute or Lambie.

Man, what I would give to have this backline: Goosen-Mvovo-Lambie-Taute-Pietersen-Ludik with Jantjies and de Jongh on the bench to cover. Imagine that. Yes, I know... 4 Sharks in that backline but we are the most deadly on attack and at least we in Durban know how to get our wingers involved ;)

9. Vermaak/Van Zyl
10. Goosen
11. Rhule
12. Lambie
13. R.Ebersohn
14. Pietersen
15. Ludik/Taute

Goosen has a huge boot, so whoever kicks the farthest (am I saying that right) between Taute and Ludik.

Rhule? Really??? He has pace, but that's it. He is ****-poor on defense and doesn't know how to pass.

Just wait till 2015! The Cheetahs can make anyone good, just watch. But you're right, right now I'd have Mvovo or Le Roux in Habana's place. Although the way Habana goes on I'd put him at flank haha.

Although I don't think we'll see Lambie playing at 12, not with Steyn back at the sharks. Is he destined to be a benchwarmer or to be played at 15? Only time will tell...

Francois Steyn is not even our best option at 12. We have Tim Whitehead playing out of his skin and offering a lot more than Frans. I understand people want Goosen in the Bok team, but I wonder what Lambie has to do to be considered a fly-half in the green and gold. Next season he will be playing fly-half again with Michalak off to France and we have Ludik for full-back anyway. If Plumtree is putting Lambie at full-back next season he is the biggest idiot in South Africa (sports-wise of course).

I know Goosen is talented but what has he done really, to earn his place as the Bok fly-half? If Lambie plays inside center (where he will be much better suited than full-back, Goosen can be our fly-half with Jantjies on the bench but Lambie is the whole package at fly-half. We just have to wait and see what Goosen can do. Lambie has been rock-solid for 2 years now (bar some injuries).

If I were to pick a SA backline:

9 Hougaard
10 Lambie
11 Habana
12 Steyn
13 Fourie (I'd make it happen if I were coach even if I had to get sponsors to buy him out of his contract)
14 Pietersen
15 Ludik

20 Van Zyl
21 Goosen
22 Taute

Possibly a bit safe but I'd ease the newbies in as I see Lambie as pretty settled. Pienaar, Jantjies and Aplon in the extended squad. I'd look to bring in some young blood at center in 2013 end of year tour to give our current crop time in SR and see who is most nlikely to take the step up.

What's Plum going to do with Frans and Lambie, I bet he is going to **** one of them up somehow. Frans should have gone to the Cheetahs. You guys really need a new coach.

We need someone who can manage the players better. To be fair, 16 SR matches is too much for players. You need a backup in every position and funny enough, we have that now. If Jantjies joins the Sharks (rumours still but who knows...) we have him (or Bosman if things stay the same) and Lambie at fly-half, Whitehead and F. Steyn at inside center, Ludik and Viljoen at full-back. No need for Lambie to be pushed around and be used at other positions once he is playing rugby again regularly.

Whitehead plays like a man possessed. I won't forget how well he did to set up Botes for the try v Bulls in round 1 this year.
I think Steyn will make a good inside centre, he is just seriously out of shape.

Agree about Lambie, Eze (what a surprise). Goosen has played one season of CC and half a season of S15. Lambie has played far more and dare I say far better? Lambie has started one match at stand off for the Boks, in an 'injury ridden' XV. Plum is a moron, but we have a history of messing up backs. I think Eze and I were discussing Lambie's future around two years ago and we brought up Russell, et al. and how we must avoid Lambie going down that same path.

It's not because we like each other that we agree so much, we just both see what's best for the biggest talent we have in SA. Yes, Goosen is a good prospect, but the NZ and OZ fans are even raving about Lambie. People think Lambie's small posture is the reason he is not going to be as great as Goosen but Lambie has more strength than Goosen and despite being 7 cm shorter, Lambie has the same weight as Goosen. He is just more complete. Goosen will get his chance, he is only 20, but now it's Lambie's turn to shine. Turning 22 next month and was instrumental in our Currie Cup win in 2010 before being called up for the EOYT.

I was more referring to us being Sharks fanboys.
If anybody needs reminding of Lambie's strength, look at Eze's avatar. Boom! I'll never get bored of that.

I think Lambie/Goosen could make a very good five eighths pairing (Carter-Mauger, Wilkinson-Catt, Hook-Henson; in which both players are able playmakers).

Yes! He scored 25 points in the Currie Cup final, a record for 1 player!!! Amazing match that was. Wait, I will watch it this weekend, just for fun haha.

I'm really looking forward to this match - probably more than I have any non-AB's test this year. There have been some high scoring South Africa - Australia tests in South Africa in recent seasons, so hopefully this is another one.

Up front South Africa have an obvious edge - as long as they play like they did against the AB's rather than they did the week before against Australia! South Africa should have a reasonable edge in the scrums, and I think the lineout will be a particularly interesting battle. Bekker needs a massive game to justify his re-inclusion, and putting pressure on Sharpe at lineout time will be a key for him. It is good to see Etzebeth back (hopefully he doesn't head-butt anyone this week...), as I think his ability to create go-forward ball from nothing is important to the Boks (something B du Plessis used to provide for them). Douglas will face another big test this week - debuting against a fired up Argentina was a big challenge (which he passed with flying colours), and it doesn't get any easier this week!

Last time the teams played Australia won the battle in the loose largely due to Michael Hooper, though I think it will be a lot tighter this week. Though Louw may not be in Hooper class at the breakdown (few players are) he is a genuine openside flanker, which is exactly what South Africa need. Samo has been pretty good for Australia this season, and Dennis is a reliable player, but Australia do really lack a powerful ball runner in their loose-trio - indeed Hooper has been their best ball running loosie this season (at 1.82m and 97kgs...). Australia will be relying a lot on Alexander and Polota-Nau again to create go-forward ball, which they really need if they are going to create space for their backs. I still feel that Coetzee should be starting over Alberts, but Alberts has in general been pretty good this season, while Vermeulen has looked very comfortable at test level thus far.

I think South Africa have an advantage in the halves - as long as Pienaar plays a more instinctive game this week. When he plays a more controlled game he seems to slow down any quick ball South Africa get - this is fine if your game-plan is "kick the leather off the ball", but if you want to use your backline you have to give them the ball before the oppositions defense gets set! Phipps is solid, but that's about the best you can say about him. The battle between Goosen and Beale will be a a highlight for me. Goosen looks a phenomenal talent - hopefully he is allowed to express himself rather than being constrained by a conservative gameplan. Beale has been pretty average this season, but played some great rugby for the Rebels when he was shifted to the 10 jersey. He could be a real threat to the Boks if he takes on the line, especially if he has hard running players like McCabe and Ioane running off his shoulder.

The midfield is one area where I think Australia has an edge. McCabe/Ashley-Cooper may not be the most creative midfield in the game, but they are very strong on defense, and both are strong runners with ball in hand. de Villiers gets a chance in his preferred position, and it will be interesting to see how Taute goes at 13 - he looks talented, but I felt he played his best rugby for the Lions at 15. Some good match-ups out wide too. Hopefully both teams get the ball out to their wings so we get the chance to see Hougaard, Habana, Shipperly, and Ioane in full flight!

Despite the fact Australia have won the last 5 in a row against South Africa, I think South Africa enter this match as big favourites. They have the edge in almost every area, have a goal-kicker who can kick anything from within 60m of Australia's tryline, and have the home advantage. If they don't win this match I'm sure there will be plenty of hard questioned asked! I'm picking South Africa by 10-15, in what should be a pretty high scoring game (a scoreline along the lines of 45-32 would not surprised me).

Only 40 minutes left. Pre-game show started. I am getting nervous now. I hope Goosen follows his instict and doesn't drop to the level of kick and rush. If Goosen does so, we know Meyer has to go because it means we will not move an inch forward as long as he is the Bok coach.

OK, apparent changes in the Aussie team.
Naas telling us Gill has replaced Higginbotham, and Harris taking the vacant position.

Ashwin Willemse and Naas Botha making a fool of themselves by including Keegan Daniel in the line-up haha. He is not even in the squad.

Thank gawd this is on, I've never been so bored on a Saturday for a while
