Exactly. Tuilagi had bloody clotheslined him!! Ashton was well within his rights to do that and more
Clotheslining usually happens around the neck, this was a legal tackle on his chest, that just so happened to be about 3 and a half hours late.

A legal tackle involves wrapping your arms around a PLAYER WHO HAS THE BALL taking due care and attention not to use any force more then necessary.

Tuilagi initiated swinging a single stiff forearm, after Ashton had shipped the ball, and made no attempt to wrap the arms.

Legal challenge, my arse.

I'd let it go in the backyard!

So how is a little shove to say "f off" assault when a swinging arm hit isn't?

Pull another one.

What??... your previous post was about who started it, be honest. Yes Manu tackled him without the ball across the shoulders and THEN Ashton STARTED it with the first assault and then Manu did his assault. Fact is no Ashton thugerry, no thugerry at all...agreed?

Surely Manu started it by taking out Ashton off the ball and with a swinging arm.

It sounds like yous are saying its ok for Ashton to do that shove and a knee to the spine "assault" and Manu shouldnt reply with an assault of his own. Its like your saying he should just chump out.

Ashton didn't knee Manu in the spine. All he did was push him. Also I think you are a wee bit biased, it is clear to everyone that Manu was in the wrong from the start.

To be fair it did look like Ashton kneed him in the back in the act of shoving him - probably not intentional but it still happened, and was probably what made Tuilagi see red (I know if I got kneed in between the shoulder blades I wouldn't be too chuffed - wouldn't punch the guy in the face though, but hey ho)

Bearing in mind he'd clearly just been in the wrong with a both high and late challenge, to which most people would object, I think he should have shown a bit of humility rather than using offense as a defense. Dude I wouldnt expect Tuilagi to necessariyl just walk away after that but to throw three punches against someone who had a legitimate grievance is ridiculous.

Knees, 'gentle' stamping all happen in rugby. Off the ball taking out and punching of that intensity should not.

Maybe I am a bit biased but Im honest and fair. Its good to know you represent everyone Gavin :)

Oh yes, I have watched it several time. Even posted the video on a friend's facebook. If you are saying that Ashton started the whole incident by what he is shown to do in the picture then let me quote Tana Umaga 'we are not playing tiddlywinks'. Ashton's knee is positioned between Manu's shoulders before he pushed him. For myself if I am going to push someone I would want to get a strong base so that I would not fall backwards, and I think this is exactly what Ashton is doing in the picture. Either way the sequence of events went like this.

1-Young's took a quick tap and made ground
2-Ashton came in as a support runner
3-Manu took Ashton out off the ball with a swinging arm
4-Ashton angry went up and pushed Manu, as shown in your picture
5-Manu turned and punched Ashton three times, the third connecting with Ashton's temple.
6- Both players were shown a yellow card

Oh ok I didnt know about the build up to it all, I didnt see the whole game either, I only saw the situation discussed. Yeah fair enough 3 punches was quite a bit however Ashton might be better off for it now. Now I think we wont see anymore knees to the back from Ashton so thats a positive as for Manu he needs and will be punished.

Tackled without the ball does happen in rugby. Smashed across the chest does happen in rugby, these 2 things are apart of our game, its rugby. Knees in the back, attacking a man while hes on the ground and punching is not rugby.

Am I on TRF or 606?
Well it's just getting silly, Yes Tuilagi hit him off the ball, Yes Ashton pushed him aggressivley, Yes Tuilagi handed Ashton's ass to him, but no one will ever agree on who was in the wrong and who was in the right.

I do hope Tuilagi will learn from this, but I also hope he is available to the World Cup.
