Portugal ask for an EU Bailout

My French grandad maintains that the best way to settle unemployment is with " a good war"

Completely correct, sure picked the US out of the great depression. If the Germans has any real desire to end the international fiscal crisis they'd just do what they did last time and have a go at the Poles.

What exactly defines a 'good war' in France?

Is it managing to retreat with minimal casualties? To get back from the German border to Paris in under 1 week? To last a little longer than a country with a tenth of it's forces? To surrender and work alongside the aggressor, and then side with the Allies when they eventually win, claiming to be courageous victim throughout occupation?

Whicheever way, I doubt Europe will ever be involved in a major civil war again (As all wars are civil wars, because all men are brothers :p ), however the Yanks will still be at it with other countries until they suffer significant civilian casualties, which in a way is a good thing, because (apart from themselves of course) they have kinda managed to keep the world in check.

Ehhh, what are the Argies doing this time of year, last time I heard their new government is awful keen on getting hold of the Fauklands

I resent this.

Great grandfather seems to have been wounded twice in WW1 (once in the Somme and another in Verdun) decorated for bravery multiple times and suffered severe mental trauma for the rest of his days only for people to mock the French army for its actions in WW2. Also had the 50,000 French not defended Lille with no hope of evacuation or retreat you could say goodnight to 300,000 of the BEF and hello Mr.Hitler.

Going back further do some research on the battle of Tours.

True, I do not mock the individual soldiers that fight in the army, more so the politicians and horribly tactically naive generals that they seemed to have installed, and the Vichy government/puppet show

To think the vast casualties could have been avoided if a fellable forest was defended appropriately

Buy it when it's the most expensive it's ever been on the chance it MAY go up more. Bullet proof, that plan is.

It started in the 1980's...

No, some coal mines closed when everywhere was turning to Nuclear power and some brummie socialists stopped building crap cars which nobody was buying anyway.

Not quite the mass destruction of industry running through farming, manufacturing, construction and craftsmanship which happened under Blairs regime because "University is a Right, not a privilege", meaning the uneducated suddenly demanded 500k per year for doing sod all.

Thatcher ruined the coal industry. And of course did nothing to bring alternatives to people, which is why St Helens is full of absolute fruitloops.

Silver has doubled in a year so I'm making a nice profit and I won't be selling anytime soon. Gold has also gone up and continues to do so.
Good for you! A wise choice, but do you have the real stuff, or ETFs? I'm sure you're aware of the controversy.

Anyway, don't forget to sell before the bubble bursts.

People, there is no left, there is no right. It's all about the increasing power of the state.

UK voters kicked out the incompetent Labour party, and elected a government that is STILL borrowing more year on year. They are reducing the deficit, but that just means the debt grows more slowly. If rates payable on government bonds increase, it is simply a matter of time before bankruptcy is declared. The UK will get there later than Iceland/Ireland/Greece/California/Portugal, but it will get there no matter if the government is left wing or right wing.

Meanwhile there are sporadic protests by people who want ... more free stuff. Student grants, public sector pensions, advanced public healthcare, not to have to pay for granny's declining years. There is no such thing as free - you will pay for it, if not by direct taxation by the government (lol!), then through inflation induced by a currency weakened by bailing out the banks who helped create the illusion this was all affordable.

Mathematics means if the answer is wrong that's not because it's Left or Right - it's just fcuking WRONG.

Gorey Cinema had over 1000 applications for 12 jobs I believe , with people applying with architectural degrees and all sorts of wonderful qualifications....most of those hired were transition year students working at well below minimum wage :/ 18 percent unemployment at the moment over here
The revolution is coming. How do the oldies expect to retire if they have to rely on these minimum wage slaves to cash out their "my home is my pension" funds in ten years? Not going to happen.

The young must get angry now, and not in a studenty way. They will never benefit from the state like their parents did, and yet they're expected to prop up the entire pyramid with their taxes.

Its massively undervalued. This video got into some detail of why. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IiarVvZguY

Yeah I have the physical stuff and I'm aware of whats happening. I did see something about some rich people now starting to demand delivery of their silver.

The sh!te has yet to hit the fan. Going by the media you'd think everything was normal. Portugal were fine up until this week and Irelands leaders were telling lies all the time too.

I saw something before about local people who started to print their own currencies. The money could only be spent on local things by local people and the result was more employment and all the wealth stayed in the locality! As well more people starting their own businesses. Thats something on the decline too.

Big businesses drain wealth from where ever they are located. They open up with much media attention and boast about creating jobs etc but they don't show little family run businesses closing or the profits going to those in the top of the chain who are on their yacht in a tax free haven. Overall a tesco coming into a town will result in less employment.
